2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

Re: 2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

The tweet seemed like one of those standard non-denial denials.

Maybe, maybe not. I'd have expected something like "We haven't received an application from Arizona State or any other school. We'll review anything we get." or similar. I think that it's more of a matter of fact — they haven't had formal talks within the league or with ASU. But obviously they have talked — this kinda sounded like they were ****ed.

Sounds an awful lot like a done deal, but we'll see. Let's just hope the WCHA will be ok.

Re: 2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

The unfortunate thing is seeing Ferris win the playoff and then win a game in the NCAA tournament. Somehow, the team who plays the least attractive hockey ends up as your most successful, and the stigma on the league grows even bigger. And even worse, it starts to encourage other teams that the way to be successful is to chip off the glass, dump and chase, clutch and grab, and hope your goalie can help you steal a game.

This comment makes me think you didn't see the Ferris-St. Cloud game.
Through regulation the score was 4-4 and shots were 33-29. But more importantly, there was some great north-south action and it was a really fun game to attend. I'd go so far as to argue it was one of the most entertaining games of the tournament.

I only saw a handfull of Ferris' games throughout the RS, so I will defer comment there to those who are more familiar. But, in my humble opinion, in the NCAA Tournament they represented the conference very well.

It's likely he saw the whole thing through black and gold glasses. :) A segment of the Tech fanbase increasingly loves to talk as if we were somehow screwed by the realignment, or the WCHA officials fail to dictate the calls that should be made, and I'm getting sick of it. We are becoming like the WCHA version of Freepers, seeing some conspiracy where it never existed. And no, I will not apologize for that characterization.

I would argue that's because st cloud dictates the pace of play. If you watched the wcha tournament, that wasn't really the case. They scored a goal and locked down.

Sharks Recall Ryan Carpenter From San Jose Barracuda

Carpenter, 24, led the Barracuda in points (55) and assists (37) in 66 AHL games this season. His plus-20 rating led all Barracuda players (T-15th in the league) in his second full professional campaign, and his 37 helpers ranked T-18th in the AHL. I tried looking at UAA's schedule and it went to the 2016-17 season. There is no dates listed but it probably means the WCHA will most likely be releasing the composite schedule anytime now.

Re: 2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

I tweeted the WCHA today and they said schedule would come out "by mid-month".

So assuming that ASU does join the less than nice guys of the NChc, it kind of makes it crystal clear that the excuse of like minded and competitive schools was so much dirty water doesn't it. I wonder if there will be a travel subsidy.

We prefer to think of an offer from the NCHC to ASU as more akin to a "call from the governor", commuting the death sentence that was otherwise their fate.

Except they really are going to be dead now, down there with CC.

Should lower the RPI

Re: 2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

I hope they defined the actual month.
Well I assumed May, but you know what assumptions lead to...
Sounds like we'll get the schedule after the WCHA dangles the ECAC and NCHC for a bit and then puts the schedule on the top shelf where Momma never dusts...

"@JohnsonsJerseys Soon-ish! Still some "stickhandling" with some potential games, but no later than middle of month."

I'm guessing they view ASU much like they were viewing Notre Dame. Doesn't matter if the hockey team is any good, they are perceived to be a "big" school that will have tens of thousands of fans across the country simply because their football team is well known.

However as you pointed out, this flies directly in the face of being a conference that was all about hockey. Someone said that hockey might be only the 3rd biggest sport at ASU but I think it would be lucky to crack the top 5 or even top 10 in terms of what their fans will watch / attend or what will be shown on their TV network. In my estimation:

M Football
M Basketball
W Basketball
W Gymnastics
W Volleyball
M Baseball
W Softball
M Wrestling
W Soccer
M Swimming / Diving
W Swimming / Diving
W Lacrosse
Maybe hockey gets on the list here
Then everything else that gets little or no viewers M/W Cross Country, M/W Golf, M/W Track & Field, W Beach Volleyball, W Waterpolo, W Triathalon, etc.

Some may think this ranking is silly and that hockey couldn't be that low on the list. Well look at how many games the BigTen shows on their network and keep in mind that almost HALF of their member teams actually have hockey programs. Why the heck is ASU's network going to show ASU hockey playing a bunch of schools NOT in their conference and that no one has heard about?

I'd definitely rank hockey behind football, both basketballs, baseball, softball, volleyball & soccer.

How is it that Womens beach VBall...at ASU gets no viewers? My mind has been blown.

Well you may be forgetting that women's college beach volleyball teams have to wear actual politically correct, publicly acceptable, non-offensive uniforms, unlike the women's AVP pro beach swim wear competition, err I mean volleyball tour, which is basically the SI swimsuit edition with a white ball and a net added.
