Maybe the German team should shell them again. Then we can show all the shots of sobbing Brazilians when it's 5-0 again, all over again like a couple years ago.

This Olympiad is going to be a fiasco. And I'd bet dollars to donuts that NBC glosses over all of it.

Because Hope Solo is an idiot.

Anyone with half a brain who has followed the Zika virus epidemic will know that the chances right now of getting Zika are way higher in the good old US of A (Florida) than they are in Brazil. (Heck, the chances of an athlete getting an STD because of all the sex that takes place in the Olympic Village -- seriously, read about it -- is higher than any of them getting Zika.)

Here's why:

1) It's wintertime in Brazil right now. The mosquitos are barely out.
2) Even the WHO has said they have stopped studying the Zika virus in Brazil because no one is getting infected anymore. So, they don't have any new cases to follow.
3) Even if you get the Zika virus, it does not produce birth defects if you wait a period of time after your infection.

But instead, all Hopeless Solo did was constantly berate Brazil over the Zika virus, say over and over again she might not go to the Olympics because of it, and then post that ridiculous picture which could do nothing but offend the hosts.

Then, on top of that, she says the other day that the media are the ones to blame for everything and that she didn't say any of those things (when she did) and she didn't offend the hosts (when she did).

There are proper precautions to take against Zika which many of the athletes are doing. Solo's antics are not.

She is the definition of LOSER.

The USA men's basketball team has always stayed in separate quarters ever since the pros started playing. This is nothing new.

Other teams have done this in the past. The Austrian ski teams tend to stay in an isolated chalet during the winter games.

Many times, teams do this to cut down on the distractions, more so than for better living conditions.

I saw a story somewhere that said that the promised transit improvements haven't been completed, and supposedly the street traffic in Rio is often snarled to nightmarish levels of gridlock.

I wonder if/how big an issue it will be for athletes being unable to make it to their venue in time for competition.....

So this athlete has the audacity to use social media to gain the ire of an opposing team's fan base, knowing that she'd be booed during a game in their stadium?

Why, that's unsportsmanlike! More than that, it's unladylike! How could she? :mad: :mad: :mad: And a :( for good measure! (If only we could have haughty head nods, too.)


Athletes do this kind of crap all the time, so settle down, Francis. Either she just wants to make a fool of herself so she can enjoy the spotlight, or she's pulling attention away from her teammates so they can play better while shouldering all the boos (maybe the booze too) herself. Hope Solo made her play and the Brazilians took her bait, they took it hook, line and sinker.

Well, yeah, but that was just naturally assumed. Look at the list or reports of her police interactions for further proof on that.

To St. Clown, we're not talking about just any athlete looking to stir up fans. We're talking about Hope Solo, who as Brenthoven puts it, is bat-sh* crazy....

What's wrong with actually not acting like the stereotypical ugly American? What's wrong with actually acting like decent international citizens?

There is a time and place for everything. For the athletes themselves, this is not the time and place to look like rich, arrogant Americans complaining about the facilities and accommodations. Let others at other times deal with the IOC and their insane ways.

P.S. I get what your saying, and I don't necessarily disagree with it. But, I would like to see Americans, for once, act in a civilized non-whiny manner.

Wasn't it Brazil where they killed a goalie or ref for blowing an easy save or call during a World Cup game? I'm not too worried about our athletes or tourists looking like Ugly Americans down there.

That sort of thing has happened in a lot of South American countries, but not in the World Cup. Especially Columbia during the drug cartel era. Did you watch the ESPN 30/30 "The Two Escobars"? Great documentary. That might be what you are talking about, but Pablo Escobar was not killed because of that infamous own goal against the USA. The documentary explains that.

I'm not too worried about our athletes or tourists looking like Ugly Americans down there.

But, that doesn't mean we should stoop to that level or use it as an excuse to propagate the stereotype that we are ugly, stuck up, arrogant Americans. I don't understand why you or any other American want to propagate that image.

Because the perception of the Ugly American Tourist changes from country to country. It's not a ubiquitous title that we have, and from what I can find online, it looks like Brazilians have challenged us for that title over the years, based upon polls taken in tourism destinations. Besides that, since when is premiere level athlete representative of his/her nation's average citizen? If your nation's involved in these sorts of events, you know better than that.

Even her choice in partner, who IIRC has at 3 DUIs under his belt, amongst many other charges, including this beauty:

On November 12, 2012, Stevens was arrested on investigation of assault following an altercation that left his fiancée, soccer star Hope Solo, injured, but a Kirkland, Washington judge dropped the case the following day for lack of evidence.[49] The pair were wed November 13, 2012, the day after the arrest.[35]

Jeezuz settle down. Athletes of every nationality get ugly and have you actually traveled internationally? The ugly American thing is overblown. Not in that it doesn't happen but in locals couldn't care less on a grand scale. That doesn't mean we shouldn't strive for respectful behavior but this molehill ain't a mountain.
