2016 Patty Kaz Award

Re: 2016 Patty Kaz Award

The most significant crimes of the past couple of centuries
The Lindberg baby kidnapping…
The trail of Bonnie & Clyde…
William Munny, dynamiting the Rock Island & Pacific in 69 killing women and children...

Hannah Brandt not winning the Kaz in her four years @ Minnesota

Who should she have replaced in what year?

Re: 2016 Patty Kaz Award

My tongue-in-cheek fangirl answer has always been that Hilary spent her Patty Year in Vancouver.

Re: 2016 Patty Kaz Award

There has been some Kazmaier talk in the Selection Show thread so I will continue that here.

It was mentioned that Coyne has probably been the most valuable player to her team and that makes sense to me. She also is strong in academics (she is a 3 time Hockey East all academic team member).

She leads in scoring, has the most goals, and the highest ppg average.

Certainly 3 great finalists with excellent resumes, but this really does seem like Coyne's year to win.

Sorry, but I hope not.

Every year there is a top scorer. And every year, they get the Kaz. You don't have to go back far to find players (Kessel, the Lams) that match her scoring. ARD on the other hand has turned in a potentially unique year. The entire UW team is centered around her. Which has racked up an incredible and unmatched 20 shut outs. In fact, UW knocked off national champions MN with one of the deepest pool of offensive talent in the history of womens hockey...three times...and even shut them out. Her stunning GA average is also tops I've seen going back years...at 0.68...half of most other annual bests. That GA average is even better than the 62 game undefeated streak team. If ARD doesn't win the Kaz, might as well assume a goalie will never win it.

No assuming needed as I consulted a preschooler who told me that 2 previous winners are in fact goalies. ;)

One in the NCAA era. Did your preschooler relay any Kaz facts?

2008/9 was a year when the NCAA put up two scorers comparable to Coyne - Hillary Knight and Meghan Agosta.

Jesse Vetter, beating them both for the Kaz, was 33-2-5 with a sv % of .942 and GA of 1.26 and 14 SOs. Desbiens record is 32-3-1 with a sv % of .961 and GA of 0.727 and 20 SOs...almost 50% more shutouts than Vetter and Vetter never played an offense of the caliber of this year's Gophers.

Weird stat --

Wisconsin played only 1 of the top 17 teams in division 1 offense. UMD #18, ND #20, Ohio State #21, BSU #24, Providence #25, Dartmouth #26, SCSU #28, Lindenwood #31, Minnesota State #34.

Interestingly, when Minnesota had their perfect season, they had played North Dakota (7), Wisco (10), OSU (t11), SLU (17), UNH (19), MSU (26) Colgate (27), SCSU (30), and Bemidji (32) before the Frozen Four started. Makes Raty's 16 shutouts seem even more impressive.

WCHA teams rank low on offense when you only judge them by the number of times the puck is put in the net

it's a lot tougher to score when the talent level is high
you see this in men's hockey, and pros too

Perhaps the WCHA is pretty good at defense? This is evident in SOS in both KRACH and RPI. ARD played against ranked teams 13 times (9-3-1)...and in 5 games, held arguably the most prolific offense in the country to about 2 GA.

Northeastern only played 5 ranked teams all year long resulting in an 0-5 record against those teams...her team averaged about a goal a game.

Do you really want to compare schedules? Coyne is a good candidate...just not on par with ARD for her position.

Re: 2016 Patty Kaz Award

I was discussing this thread off-forum with someone and we were wondering how long it would take to get these responses. You didn't disappoint! :D

Weird stat 2 -

The leading WCHA goal scorer (tied) not from MN or WI was a Hockey East transfer. She nearly doubled her best total from Hockey East play. Easier to score?

#ONLYFACTS

Don't forget about the other Hockey East transfer whose stats went through the roof this year...

#ONLYFACTS

Don't forget about the other Hockey East transfer whose stats went through the roof this year...

is thru the roof a mathematical, statistical, or just a BS term?

Cava went from 10 goals and 17 assists in 35 games as a sophmore, 27 points
to 19 goals and 19 assists as a senior, 38 points

Illikainen went from 12 goals and 18 assists as a freshman, 30 points
to 17 goals and 15 assists as a senior, 32 points

apparently "thru the roof" must have a different meaning in Beantown than out here in the Midwest
most would expect improvement over the years

good try DB, but you failed
