2016 MLB Season - Curses, foiled again?

Re: 2016 MLB Season - Curses, foiled again?

I don't think you can do that. A DH does not appear in the field. It would appear that the SFG will forgo the DH tonight and play by NL rules in an AL ballpark.

Could they use the DH for a different position or must it be the pitcher?

Re: 2016 MLB Season - Curses, foiled again?

I'm wondering, say Bumgarner is pulled in the 7th or 8th inning. Do the Giants forego the DH for the rest of the game?

Re: 2016 MLB Season - Curses, foiled again?

You can DH for any of the 9 defensive positions...

Maybe in the lower levels, but not in MLB, from what I read here:

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/about_mlb/rules_regulations.jsp

The Designated Hitter rule:
A hitter may be designated to bat for the starting pitcher and all subsequent pitchers in any game without otherwise affecting the status of the pitcher(s) in the game. A Designated Hitter for the pitcher must be selected prior to the game and must be included in the lineup cards presented to the Umpire-in-Chief.

The Designated Hitter named in the starting lineup must come to bat at least one time, unless the opposing club changes pitchers. It is not mandatory that a club designate a hitter for the pitcher, but failure to do so prior to the game precludes the use of a Designated Hitter for that game.

Also here, in the PDF for the 2015 MLB Rule book. Page 55, Rule 5.11

If I'm reading Rule 5.11 correctly, the answer is NO:

(3) It is not mandatory that a club designate a hitter for the
pitcher, but failure to do so prior to the game precludes
the use of a Designated Hitter for that club for that game.

That depends if Baumgartner is being hit for or not. The DH can be used for any of the 9 players. If another player is being hit for, the use of the DH is tied only to those two players. Any subs elsewhere in the lineup are not relevant to the DH.

You're making the common mistake of thinking that the DH is tied to the pitching position. There is no such connection. Any defensive player can be hit for.

Hrm... It's in there... Dunno how I effed that up :o

Yep, pitcher only in MLB...

I can probably tell you how. I'm only guessing, but I suspect that in lower levels (high school and such), that you can indeed use a DH for any player. If that's the level of games you're working, then those rules are what you're used to. Sounds reasonable, at least.

Well that's exactly it. Even though MLB Rules are often the base of a good chunk of baseball played in the Summer, it's something that usually will show it's head once in a while. Many tournament organizers do a pass poor job of clarifying things like this, so you always default to the MLB Rulebook unless noted. It's something I should have known :o

Re: 2016 MLB Season - Curses, foiled again?

Bumgarner goes 1-4, pitches into the 7th, snaps a personal 2 game losing streak and the Giants end a 3 game schneid.

It's July 1st, what is Bobby Bonilla going to do with this year's million?

And the Indians STILL have not lost since the city had their first major champion crowned in a half-century.
