2016 Laura Hurd Discussion

Re: 2016 Laura Hurd Discussion

I don't think Middlebury gets a Pool C if they lose nescac tournament.

Not after losses to Castleton and Norwich.

I think the only 5 teams in Pool C contention are Plattsburgh, Elmira, Adrian, Lake Forest and Amherst.

I'd go even further and say that the winner of the NESCAC tourney (regardless of who it is) is likely to be the only NESCAC team in the tourney this year. I hate to give CrossCheck fodder but Conn College is a lurking dark horse in this year's tournament....if Amherst and Middlebury unexpectedly lose in the first round as they did 2 years ago I'd say Conn is likely the qualifier (unless Williams makes it a threepeat which isn't likely in New London).

Generally, no. But against the competition that Plattsburgh plays more than half of their games against I would say probably yes. Hey, I respect the Plattsburgh program and all of their accomplishments, but tossing a bunch of shutouts at ECAC-West teams other than Elmira and Utica (and occasionally Oswego) isn't really Laura Hurd fodder. GAA against Elmira, Utica, and the non-conference schedule is 1.18 (too tedious to calculate save percentage) which is still very good but slightly more pedestrian. And she has shown she can be beaten and the trend more recently (Elmira and Utica) is not nearly as good (2.00 GAA in those 4 games). She isn't Aveson and personally I'm not feeling the Laura Hurd in her future.

So give it to girls who have 3 points against ranked teams? Lol yea thats smart. Show me 1 goaltender who has a better save % and GAA is the ranked games Plattsburgh has played in.

I don't think a goaltender will win it so it's an irrelevant piece of info to me. Gonna be one of the previously mentioned skaters (not just the Westerners but the entire group).

Just FYI...

She has played in 9 games against current USCHO Ranked Teams:
Save % .955 (still would rank 2nd in Save %)
GAA 1.00 (still would rank 1st in GAA)
3 ShutOuts

She has played in 11 games against current D3HKY Ranked Teams:
Save % .963 (2nd)
GAA 0.728 (yup still 1st)
6 Shutouts

So your statement about tossing a bunch of shutouts at ECAC-West teams (which didn't one of those teams not named Elmira or Plattsburgh just tie and beat an almighty top 4 NESCRAP team? oh yea that's two more shut outs for her too...), she does it against the best of the best.

Still not Aveson. Still not going to win. Regardless of Oswego beating Williams.....which doesn't seem like a relevant stat...

I think you're correct. Unless something crazy has happen, Plattsburgh, Elmira, Adrian and Lake Forest all look great right now for the two spots available.

Re: 2016 Laura Hurd Discussion

Logic...so we give it to girls who don't show up against top teams ....logic...

What if they gave it to one of your PS skaters....? Didn't they show up (and contribute a lot more than the goalie on a team that regularly thrashes their opponents and rarely if ever gets outshot?)?

Syd played in 11 games vs Ranked teams the year she won but first lets remind you of this:

Camille Leonard
2015-2016 vs Ranked Teams
Games 11
Save % .963
GAA 0.728
6 Shutouts

Sydney Aveson
2013-2014 vs Ranked Teams
11 Games
Save % .961
GAA 1.002
4 ShutOuts

Still not Aveson. Still not going to win.
Hmmm amazing. Better Save % and Better GAA vs. ranked teams....maybe you should look into things before you open your mouth and try to act like you know what you're talking about....

Regardless of Oswego beating Williams.....which doesn't seem like a relevant stat...
It is relevant since you're the one who wants to claim Leonard gets all of her win's, shutouts, and low GAA games against "weak" ECAC West teams. Yet those weak ECAC teams just tied and beat a Top 4 NESCAC team...obviously if they beat an almighty NESCAC school they must be pretty good, so we should probably rank Oswego and put her stats into the totals as well.

I just proved to you that Leonard (while there is no dispute she has played against some of the weaker ECAC W teams which is why I am not using overall stats) STILL has some of the best stats against the BEST DIII hockey has to offer. 11 games vs Ranked teams.....as I said, show me a goaltender who has A. Played in 11 games vs. Ranked teams B. Put up the same stats as Leonard in such games. You can't do it for Leonard and you can't do it for Sheeran or Meneghin.

Re: 2016 Laura Hurd Discussion

Who doesn't show up against Top Teams?

Refresher:
Points vs . USCHO Top 10
Sheeran 6-6-12 (sr)
Lewicki 3-0-3 (jr)
Meneghin 4-6-10(so)
Greenway 0-3-3 (sr)
Taylor 0-1-1
Kinsel 0-2-2
Reed 1-1-2
Balisy 2-4-6
Senese 1-2-3
Jones 1-2-3
Eder-Zdechlik 4-1-5

I

I think you're going all Crosscheck and overestimating the value of the 4th place NESCAC team :)

Sheeran is a sophomore. What does this prove. It proves that Plattsburgh played more ranked teams.

If you go with the NCAA rankings...Greenway has 9 points vs Ranked not 3.

Yea glad she piled up 6 of those against #6 powerhouse St.Norbert...

Sheeran still has 15 points against the NCAA ranked teams...against much tougher competition..... of which only 1 was against the 6th NCAA ranked East team.

Who cares if she's a sophomore. You act like its never been given to a non-senior. It's been given to a Senior over the past 6-8 years because it was a Senior who was at the top of the points list 4 of the last 5 times. Your "Heisman" rule is pathetic.

You listed her as a senior...I corrected you.

Its not my rule...I was just stating the trend.

Obviously you feel that a Plattsburgh player should win the award. I'm not saying that they don't deserve it...I just don't think that they will win it. If I'm wrong, I will give you $5. Calm down...it will be ok.

My point is...just like you say Plattsburgh can't help who is in their conference...the players can't help who they play. How do you know that if Lake Forest played 10 games against ranked teams that she wouldn't have 15 points? Its not her fault that they don't play ranked teams. Should she be punished because she plays in the west where teams don't get ranked? You could easily replace Norwich and Utica with Stevens Point and St Norbert in the top 10 poll...that would give her more points against ranked teams.

Re: 2016 Laura Hurd Discussion

Here's an interesting question. Is it possible that Plattsburgh is just a really deep team of strong players (which is really uncommon in D3) and doesn't actually have a star player worthy of the Laura Hurd award? Maybe they are just a really good TEAM rather than a team with individual standouts......discuss amongst yourselves (this should blow PSU's mind).

I agree...what bout the top scorers on teams with less depth doesn't that say more about that player than a player who can rack up points with a team that has depth....I think girls in the west get overlooked for this exact reason....those girls Have to work twice as hard and frankly don't get credit? Not dissing the Plattsbrgh players at all just stating an observation!
