2016-2017 WCHA Season Thread

Re: 2016-2017 WCHA Season Thread

If top forwards are staying away from the WCHA because it's low scoring, then shouldn't it logically follow that the top defensemen and goalies would be committing in droves?

No because everyone wants to play the best. Defensemen care as much about the 2-way play, getting to be part of the offense as anyone. Although to be fair, the WCHA has always been strong between the pipes, so you could see some truth to that.

Re: 2016-2017 WCHA Season Thread

I think the point many of you miss is that a real scout isn't going to be fooled by an inflated stat line. If you have talent and you play in a league that bogs you down, a true talent scout is going to see that player has the skills to play at the same level. By the same token a player to puts up 40 pts in a wide-open league without basic skills isn't going to the next level regardless of what their stats say. That same scout will take one look at their game and notice they are not facing any tough opposition and understand that once the competition gets tough they are not going to be racking up the points any more.

Hey if a kid just wants to rack up stats, go play D-III or club hockey. They can take even a minimal amount of D-I level skill and be the next Great One. If you really want to get to the next level, things like who coached you, how much you improved year-to-year, and physical skills have way more to do with you getting pro attention than your stat line.

Only fans are impressed by great stats.

Scouts are looking at those who can play a style similar to what they'd be expected to play in the pros. Just like with football, if you play in a system that's dissimilar to the pro game, scouts will shy away from you. If a scout knows one guy can play an uptempo, speed game, because he just saw him do it, that kid moves way ahead of a kid who could maybe play that way, but no one has really seen it for the last 4 years.

Has the WCHA really been good between the pipes in the last couple years, or have we just piled up impressive numbers because no one gets near the net to take a shot? It's not like our goalies have posted a lot of shutouts in non-con games recently. No knock on our goalies - I think most are probably quite good. But I don't know that they're able to really prove that in conference games. Again, if you have a style of play dissimilar to other leagues, both college and pro, it's hard to evaluate the real talent of the players.

Re: 2016-2017 WCHA Season Thread

I wonder how many have talked to the players, coaches & scouts and asked their perception. Or if they are just making fan assumptions.

What is wrong with Bowling Green? I'm very surprised by their slow start after being picked to finish 1st in the WCHA.

Western is that good...I wish. But hopefully that's partially true. We're in our third weekend of the season and second real weekend. Let's not freak out...unless you are a MSU fan. Then you'll be lucky to win seven games this season.

Hildebrand covered up a lot of flaws for the Spartans, and even with him, they weren't very good. Without him, this year could be a complete train wreck.

And to give credit where credit is due, LSSU seems on the way to being a good team.

Players of the Week have been released.

I'm sorry, but if you post back-to-back shutouts, you shouldn't be sharing the defensive player award with anyone - especially when the listed credentials for the co-winner are all offensive stats. I'd much rather see Headrick share the Offensive Player award - don't put him in the other category just because he's listed as a defenseman. And to be honest, he deserved that one all by himself as well.

Why doesn't the WCHA have a goaltender of the week? They should keep goalies and defensemen separate.

I agree with you, so you're not the only person who has had that mindset. Perhaps the awards should be "Offensive Performance of the Week," and "Defensive Performance of the Week." Then, however, you run into the difficulty of determining how well a defenseman does his job with quantifiable stats and setting it apart from a goaltending performance. I suppose there's plus/minus and blocked shots, but those don't necessarily paint the whole picture either.
