2016-2017 Division 1 Polls

Re: 2016-2017 Division 1 Polls

There's going to be a new poll this year -- the SB Nation Women's Hockey poll. It consists of several of us SB Nation writers (from BC Interruption, The Daily Gopher, Bucky's 5th Quarter, SB Nation College Hockey, and SB Nation Women's Hockey). In all it looks like there are 17 ballots.

Week 1 won't be officially posted because the new SB Nation women's hockey website launch was pushed back (it's looking like Monday -- although FYI I'm not a part of their site), but week 2 should drop on Monday.

In the meantime, I did compile the week 1 ballots for the poll, and used it to do a sort of BUY or SELL look at the top 10:

Re: 2016-2017 Division 1 Polls

TTT is correct that BSU got hit hard by graduation. Very hard. I would still buy BSU stock at #12, because the success in Bemidji comes from the whole being more than the sum of the parts. The Beav's didn't go from winning 11 games to back-to-back 20-win seasons because the roster suddenly got a lot more talented. Bilic in particular is a big loss, but you haven't heard the last of BSU.

Re: 2016-2017 Division 1 Polls

There are almost as many polls as there are teams LOL

does this mean there won't be a USCHO fan forum poll?
I'm not sure what the infatuation with "what a team has lost" is, if the team were to focus on that, they may as well throw in the towel, it's what a team has, and how they use it.
but I do agree, UND & BSU will not finish above UMD

It's just another way to try and make some educated guesses based on what little information we have at the beginning of the year.

I try to look at both. I do like to look at what a team lost because it's hard to tell how much the returning players benefited from the talents of those who left. See: Eastern, North.

Fair enough,

I kind of like WI getting the #1 placement, keeps the GWH hungry and something to shoot for
You mention WI has the best goalie, no argument there
But MN has the Best Canadian forward, the best US forward, the best blueliner, and returns the best blueline corp, returns the most goals, and returns the most points, as I said, it’s not what you lost, but what you have

I haven't decided yet. Do y'all want one?
stay tuned

Not to mention what they gained... 4 U18 national team players? Yeesh. Although the Badgers do have 3 of their own.

I had thought the Badgers were going to run away with it this year, just off gut, but after doing some of my research it's much, much closer than I thought it was going to be. It wouldn't surprise me to see either team on top.

It's seriously not even close between 1-2 and the rest.

EDIT: Also I will say RE: returning points -- that's less fair to a team like Wisconsin that was more known for its defense. But, I mean, we're splitting hairs at this point. Returning or departing, they're both just ways of trying to look at things objectively, which is always better than the alternative.

it's not so much that I object to WI being ranked #1 and MN 32
I guess I was surprised by the 15 votes for WI and 2 for MN
seems it should be more evenly split

it looks to me like we will have some pretty interesting conference title chases across the board this year to be too concerned about who the national #1 ranking is

Re: 2016-2017 Division 1 Polls

I remain mystified as to how North Dakota is getting any votes. The ballot would have to go down to 17 or 18 before I'd find room for them.

Re: 2016-2017 Division 1 Polls

The pollsters sure are anxious to get BC to 3 as quickly as possible. I suppose a sweep of UConn will do the trick.

UND has done nothing notable to this point. They play BSU/UMD/UM back to back to back. That will define their spot.
