2015 Pairwise Discussion & Predictions

Re: 2015 Pairwise Discussion & Predictions

I don't generally support increasing the number of teams in the tourney, but I love this idea.

I'd love to see two round-robin pools of four rather than the current quarter finals. But of course that would mean you'd need site hosts for the new quarter finals, too, who were capable of hosting six games in a short period of time and could hopefully get a crowd. It'd be great if it happened but it seems impractical.

Re: 2015 Pairwise Discussion & Predictions

Agreed. The men have 16, about 27% of their total number of teams (59). That same percentage equates to 9 (of 34) teams for the women.

Interesting. I'd like to see NCAAs expand the number of teams. I'm of the opinion its not the number of teams that make the tourney...but the number of at large bids that matter. So the at large bids are 10 vs. 59 and 4 vs. 34. Also, women's is much more top heavy. I don't believe Mankato or Providence have ever made the NCAAs and at 4 at large, have a pretty good chance of not seeing the NCAAs in our lifetime. You'd do it to keep a lot more interest in the sport nationwide and encourage other schools to add the sport.

I'd like to see a 12 tourney (minimum 10) with a four team play in and 8 at large bids.

I could definitely live with that as well. I don't like single elimination in hockey in general.

I don't lament UW getting the 4. I don't know what game or games that they could have won later in the year would have got them there. Maybe beating and not tying Clarkson 0-0? Did that SCSU loss sunk them? It's a 2 way street, Harvard also got hot. All I ask for is get a top 4 seed, get that home game, win and take your chances in the FF (not much to ask for, eh?). I guess I am more than a little spoiled.

Providence made the NCAA tourney in 2005 and played Minnesota.

I don't like single elimination in hockey in general.
I don't like round robin pools decided by a small number of games. It seems there is always some goofy tiebreaker coming into play.

Losing to OSU and SCSU on back-to-back weekends certainly didn't help the RPI any.

I had jokingly posted that the top 16 should be seeded into 4 pools with round robin play, the top two teams in each pool would advance to the next round of round robin play with the top two teams in those pools playing 1 v 2 with the winners playing for the championship & the losers playing for 3rd. This way it would only be the 17th seed complaining & I would have hockey till July 4th! So a win-win (except for the players who would ave an additional 10 games if they kept winning).

Thanks! I won't be bringing the trumpet you you all can keep your earplugs at home -- BC will be renting a local band.

Hope you've had a chance to see Mariucci. It oozes culture and tradition (with all Americans, Herb Brooks memorials and team tributes going back to before WWI) and is the perfect men's counterpart to Ridder.

All of this -- we went to a men's game the weekend we came out the first time. Mariucci is a cathedral.

I complained to building management about them not letting you bring the horn. The answer was pretty much "the rules are the rules & if we break it for one we have to break it for everyone" RIT fans brought cow bells but they were such pathetic little bells I didn't know they had until I saw them, never heard them & they were sitting in the section next to us!

Re: 2015 Pairwise Discussion & Predictions

I've been twice (somehow). I LOVE Ridder. It has such a fantastic collegiate feel, it's really well themed, and the Gopher fans are tremendous.

Ridder is very industrial looking when it is empty, but put in 2000 fans or more, a couple of exciting teams, the place rocks. Even if 1000 fans leave after MN-WI, it should still be a great atmosphere for BC-Harvard.

Better than Mariucci IMO, because you are right on top of the action and is small and intimate, and the sight lines are better than Amsoil because Amsoil has less slope to the seating and you are farther away (although Amsoil is a great building)

Oh no one said I couldn't bring it -- I was just hinting at the fact that the BC band will not be attending. It's a local rental band.

There is quite a story behind that let me tell you

The problem two years ago was that 2000 to 2500 people were gone by midway through the second period of BU/Mercyhurst. I didn't blame them, but there was zero energy in the building by that point.
