2015 Pairwise Discussion & Predictions

Re: 2015 Pairwise Discussion & Predictions

I've never seen a team in men's or women's hockey whose defensemen play as deep as BC's.
That's because you don't go back far enough. At the 2002 Olympics, Sweden was using this torpedo system, and one of it's attributes was that it would frequently have four players down below the dots in the offensive zone. Shannon Miller's team was struggling after being No. 1 earlier in the year, so she implemented that, and UMD was using it when it won its second NCAA. The Bulldogs would have a D below the other team's goal line for long stretches.

Geeesh, I call your top line good & they lay an egg. Empty net goals & assists don't count. If only VT could score.

I'm usually the first one to jump off a cliff at the first sign of a bad game but that was a tremendous, complete game effort out of BC. It was the first game in a long while that we just struggled to find the back of the net but they dominated the heck out of that game.

Litchfield played really well (obviously, based on the box score) but it just felt like one of those games. We lose this game if it's last year or the year before.

UNH of the power years in the mid-2000's used this quite successfully as well.

that goalie stole the show. she was into it from the first shot. she made at least 15 unbelievable saves. the leg pad save was the best of the year (that I've seen).

You saw two very atypical games for this team, I think. Carpenter/Skarupa and Brandt/Cameranesi are clearly in a league of their own at the moment, but most of the time our other two top lines (Field / Anastos / Capizzano and Trivigno / Leary / Sullivan) are very dangerous too, and you'd have seen more of them in almost any other game. Listening to the audio for the first period of the first game it seemed like Field in particular had really showed up to play, but it didn't end up on the board.

Of course, I could try to argue that the fact that our one non-ENG of the game was scored by a fourth-liner shows our depth :-)

Re: 2015 Pairwise Discussion & Predictions

I thought it might be interesting to look at the 2nd half of the season and see how the Pairwise would shake out if the first half of games was completely wiped out (by "first half" I meant half of games played, not pre-break and post-break). Sure enough, yes, things were pretty interesting I think.

Rank/Comparisons Won/Team/RPI
1) 14 Boston College (.7424)
2) 13 Minnesota (.7146)
3) 12 Quinnipiac (.6280)
4) 11 Minnesota Duluth (.6272) !!!
5) 10 Wisconsin (.6145)
6) 9 Cornell (.6019)
7) 7 Harvard (.5865)
8) 6 Boston University (.5914)
9) 6 St. Lawrence (.5844)
10) 5 Mercyhurst (.5132)
11) 4 Clarkson (.5611)
12) 4 Bemidji State (.5450)
13) 2 North Dakota (.5411)
14) 2 Ohio State (.5297)
15) 0 Dartmouth (.5014)

I used a break point of including games back through 11/14. It was totally arbitrary, so if anyone thinks there's a reason that was a bad break point, by all means let me know.

Just informational anyway, obviously.

I never thought I'd see the day! Quinnipiac is finally playing somebody (outside of Harvard who they lost to). Four of their next 5 games are against top 10 teams. It should finally get interesting in the east.

... and the other one is against Dartmouth, who aren't a pushover either and who got four goals past Laden last time. You have to guess at least one loss in there, three isn't out of the question.

Interesting, thanks. It would also be informative to see if strength of schedule affected some of the big moves. I don't assume everyone played the same opponents the first half as they do(did so far) in the second.

Re: 2015 Pairwise Discussion & Predictions

And #8 is on the outside looking in due to the CHA AQ. Imperative for Clarkson to get a split this weekend.
