2015 National Rookie of the Year Cordial Dialogue

Re: 2015 National Rookie of the Year Cordial Dialogue

BTW, you seem to be taking a long time to find me a therapist, my guess, and it isn't a bold one, is that all of them you've talked to want to talk to you about your problems.

I showed them your posts. They told me to forget it. They suggested euthanasia.

I agree that where you play and who you play with in sports can make a big difference. Remove Jan Kurri and Esa Tikkanen off his line and Gretzky probably doesn't get 215 points in Edmonton in the 85-86 season. Leave Roger Maris in KC or Cleveland Municipal stadiums without that short right field porch in New York and Mantle batting cleanup and Maris probably doesn't hit 61 home runs in '61. Of course, he would have had a lot less stress in KC. I worked in the same building as his brother-in-law at IRRRB in Eveleth for a couple of years and he told me that Roger's hair was coming out in clumps in the summer of 1961. The stress was not so much because of the race to break Ruth's record, as because of a scurrilous New York newspaper that had published his home address. He was greatly concerned about his wife and kids because of the death threats he was getting in the mail.

I agree that not playing on the power play with Brandt and Cameranisi has hurt Potomak in her overall point production. But I also think she will score more goals as she gets better around the net and with finishing. She is an incredible playmaker and offhand, she reminds me most of Darwitz as a freshman. You can speculate all you want how someone would play on another line, team or place but....

as Gardy so often said, "It is what it is."

Also, Potomak is first on the team in +/- at +42. Brandt would probably be higher but she missed 4 games (of course Potomak missed 2!) Stat only takes you so far, but I think that's impressive.

Newkirk is 3rd on BC in goals with 15. 4th on the team in 5 behind her, Anastos with 10. I'd say that speaks a lot for the role Newkirk is playing for BC.

They suggested euthanasia.

your idea of cordial dialogue

more fun with numbers:
last year Cameranesi had 23 goals & 42 assists, is on pace for 38-42 this year
Brandt had 34 goals & 40 assists, is on pace for 38-40 this year

this year both are getting about as many goals as assists
difference? Menefee was a goal scorer, Potomak a helper

Is Potomak getting points at the rate she is because of Cameranesi & Brandt?
or is Brandt and Cameranesi picking up goals because of Potomak?
the numbers suggest at least as much the latter as the former

If we're going to place more value on goals scored while playing with less-accomplished teammates, then I would look to someone like Paige Voight. Nine goals while playing with a team full of rookies is pretty good.

Yeah no kidding, especially when that team basically doesn't score at all. Impressive.

Agree. If a bunch of freshmen finish with pretty much the same goals per game, I would favor the forward with the least amount of support.

Agree. I would also note that those who play on power houses tend to load up on points against weaker opponents while those on the weaker teams do not have that luxury.

Re: 2015 National Rookie of the Year Cordial Dialogue

I'm starting to think Newkirk might actually deserve this more than Potomak does. That commanding lead in points Potomak had has dwindled down to just a few, and she's almost doubling her up in goals.

Also she doesn't play on the first line. Can I say that? I hope I don't ruffle any feathers saying it again** :D

**I'm KIDDING of course. Ruffling feathers is fun.

The Trivigno-Anastos-Newkirk line is absolutely on fire. Trivigno-Anastos does not seem like a natural combination but Newkirk is making it all purr. She's a huge talent.

I have zero problem with the debate. Just remember that this isn't basketball, where being "leading scorer" is determined strictly by putting the ball in the goal. Hockey requires arithmetic, but we all know that you are capable of adding, even though you like to pretend an inability to grasp this concept.

In all seriousness, if I had to vote today (which thankfully, I don't), I'd have Potomak slightly ahead of Newkirk in third and fourth, respectively. For any award other than scoring title, I'm not a big believer in just looking at who has the most total points and handing her the award. There are five people that I seriously have to consider for this award, and the problem for anyone near the bottom of the list is that there isn't much separation to others like Colgate's Bailey Larson.

Here is how I'd rank them right now and why:

1) Lovisa Selander - the only goalies with better numbers are either upperclassmen, play on dominant teams, or both. Was the foremost reason that her team made the postseason, and she made as large of a positive impression in the playoffs to date as anyone.
2) Karlie Lund - leads her team in points (38), assists (21), and her 17 assists are tied for first. Has helped raise her team's scoring average from 2.39 last season to 3.13. Scored what's likely been the biggest goal thus far in Princeton's season to date to force a third game today.
3) Sarah Potomak - leads the country, not just freshmen, in assists per game. A complete player who is tied for her team's lead in +/- and leads all of the team's forwards.
4) Makenna Newkirk - leads all freshmen in goals. Has helped her team to a perfect season.
5) Melissa Samoskevich - leads the country in game-winning goals (8). Helped Quinnipiac to its best season.

The problem for someone like Selander is retaining support now that her season is over and other contenders get to keep playing. However, she made a great final impression.

Selander would get my vote if I had one. I also like Lund as the runnerup. It will be interesting to see which one of these 2 get ECAC Rookie of the Year or whether Samoskevich gets it.

Re: 2015 National Rookie of the Year Cordial Dialogue
