2015-2016 Division I Women's Hockey Scores & Results

Re: 2015-2016 Division I Women's Hockey Scores & Results

Congrats to Merrimack; first program win over UNH, 2-1.

Re: 2015-2016 Division I Women's Hockey Scores & Results

Bemidji beats UND with 8 seconds left in OT. 2-1.

Mowat with huge save just seconds earlier.

Re: 2015-2016 Division I Women's Hockey Scores & Results

Another second period feeding frenzy for Minnesota. Brandt, McMillen, Brandt, Cameranesi, Reilly, and Pannek all score to make it 9-1 after two.

Need an equalizer or Gopher's trip to the championship trophy is going to be a yawner. How about they have to shoot at smaller nets?

Re: 2015-2016 Division I Women's Hockey Scores & Results

Clarkson sweeps BU, 4-1 today.

Howe and Bannon with 2 goals each.

Or play a team in a Green Uniform ;) .

Yes, and the Gophers haven't exactly been playing the most imposing gauntlet thus far. It's nice to have the potential for a great team, but right now, that's all it is.

Re: 2015-2016 Division I Women's Hockey Scores & Results

Penn State shuts out Union, 3-0. Celine Whitlinger got the shutout, but didn't have a very busy night against Union (only 11 saves to make). Penn State outshot Union 44-11, and held Union to no goals on three power plays.

I understand and know that your view is prudent (wait for it, here comes the "but")...

I still think it's other-worldly that the Gophers outscored St. Cloud and OSU by a combined score of 36 to 4 in four games. Wisconsin, who many believe are #2 in the land, played these same teams twice and tallied a combined score of 22 to 0. So the Gophers differential was 32 (amazing) and the Badgers was 22 (amazing, if it wasn't for the Gophers). Gophers goal differential was an unbelievable 45% better than Wisconsin's lofty results.

Maybe I'm the only one that thinks this way, but when you play another D1 hockey program, you are playing against strong, talented and experienced athletes, and scoring differentials of 8 goals per game shouldn't happen consistently, even against mid or lower tier teams. In my view, these datapoints are an indication of just how dominant these Gophers are going to be, and also how frustrating it's got to be if your a Badgers fan (because this Wisconsin team is very good, but probably not "other worldly").

Another maybe - maybe I don't know anything about women's hockey. I submit as evidence the fact that I don't live in Minnesota or Wisconsin.

I think we can expect some great, very entertaining games between Minnesota and Wisconsin.

I'm thinking the same as D2D with regards to blowouts not being all that beneficial in terms of preparation for tougher competition to come.

We've seen it before. Three years ago, the Gophers outscored opponents 40-1 over their first six games. So 43-4 isn't uncharted territory. That year ended well, but Minnesota also had great starts or runs in other years that fizzled, like 2002-03 and 2008-09. The former team lost a couple of key players, but it also ran into a team (UMD) that was better. The latter also found a team it ultimately couldn't overcome (Wisconsin), but it never really gelled.

We'll learn more in the next three series. Right now, all we've seen is confirmation of what we saw on paper, that Minnesota has the potential to be a championship team. We have to wait until March to find out which team will be. BC, Mercyhurst, Harvard, UNH, and yes, Minnesota -- there is a fairly long list of teams that overpowered opponents for much of the season but didn't even reach the title game.

I have to agree with you. Minn and Wisco certainly look to me like they are head a shoulders above anyone else out there, including BC and my Knights.

I have to say I am thrilled that Clarkson beat BU twice this weekend and that they have put together this unbeaten streak to open their season without arguably their best player Erin Ambrose (injured and there has been nothing said about when she will be available). Her absence is missed on defense and on the power play which currently is 5/26 = 19.2%. However the real difference in this team from last year is the Freshmen Class. Goal scoring is provided by McGill (4), Gabel (3), Mariani (3), and Vinkle (0) up front. Keenan (1) and Pozzebon (1) on defense are scoring and more importantly they are doing a great job taking over for the graduated Shields and Mateucci on defense. Tiley in goal is once again showing her freshman season was no fluke. This team is not going to blow out teams on a consistent basis like Minny and Wisco but they are sound defensively and have enough balanced scoring to give any team a run for their money. It is too bad that there are no WCHA teams on their schedule. I would like to see how they stack up with the WCHA.

In the ECAC, the first Harvard-Clarkson game will be played without 2 important players on each team due to the 4 Nations Cup. Clarkson will be missing Renata Fast on defense and Harvard will be missing Emerance Maschmeyer in goal.

Can Merrimack get their first weekend sweep? They're outshooting Maine but trailing by 1.

Great steal of a game by their goalie yesterday for the first program win!

Edit: Nope, but they still outshot Maine by 11. Too bad they weren't able to put one or two more in the back of the net. Their PP is going to become an important factor very quickly. They haven't scored a PP goal since the St Cloud series and St Cloud doesn't have a great PK so that's not much of a measuring stick.

Penn State beats Union by a score of 3-0, just like last night, for the weekend sweep.

yeah, MN's schedule isn't as "confection free" as some see through gold colored glasses.
