2015-2016 Coaching Changes

See something, say something

Oh, ok. Wow, I guess it makes sense considering what happened at Penn State but tough position for an assistant coach. If Maurice 'blows the whistle' and the school finds Handrahan's conduct acceptable, Maurice is screwed. If Maurice deems Handrahan's conduct acceptable and doesn't blow the whistle, he is also screwed!!!

Very disappointing. Better to know the truth than be left in the dark. But still very tough to hear.

The timing of his resignation should be brought to attention. One week after the season ends?...if Handrahan and Maurice were so bad wouldn't they have been let go sooner? Calculated move. It says the investigation started in November and ends in March? It takes that long?

Re: 2015-2016 Coaching Changes

Seems like Handrahan is an arrogant condescending dirt bag. Makes Shannon Miller look a whole lot better! I'm sure she'll love hearing about this and she'll somehow try to find a way to use it to make her case stronger.

I really don't think you can compare the two. They are totally different situations, and OSU's would have no bearing on any potential Miller lawsuit.

Re: 2015-2016 Coaching Changes

I agree with some of what you said, but you couldn't be more wrong on the resources statement. Have you been to the OSU Ice Rink lately? It's easily the worst facility in the WCHA, so I will have to just respectfully disagree with your contention that our women's hockey program has been provided with all the resources they needed to compete with the Minnesotas and Wisconsins of the world. Ever been to LaBahn? Ridder? Amsoil Arena? The Ralph? Attend a game at one of those arenas, then come back to Columbus and tell me Ohio State has the resources they need to compete. I just hope Gene Smith brings in someone who can salvage this recruiting class. It was arguably Nate's best class, and I am sure other coaches are on their phones right now trying to get them to de-commit.

Have you been to All Seasons in Mankato? Those are easily the worst two rinks in the conference. Whoever gets the Mankato job will be able to use Verizon Wireless Center as a new recruiting tool. It will be interesting to see what happens with that moving forward.

Re: 2015-2016 Coaching Changes

yeah because insulting your team is a good way to motivate them

It is a tried & true method with some coaches. If fact I would say all coaches do it to some extent. It does not have to be so nasty but still insulting play is one way get them to push themselves harder. No a great way but one way.

Please, lets not go down the same insulting road we did on the MIller deal.

Well, the rumor I heard is they are already down to 4 candidates and will likely announce soon. So apparently they were busy on that end. Your point about waiting until after the season based on the conduct is a good one though.

Must be more to it. My daughter has dealt with worse than this in minor hockey. Let go at end of year does sound like a calculated move by AD and maybe an added excuse to replace the coaching staff.

The real losers are the girls. Will the new regime honor current commitments or clear out current team? I know of one top committed player who is already in discussions with another school. School needs to act quickly or it could have a long term affect on future recruiting classes.

I thought Handrahan's comments after the OSU/Bemidji fight last season were a bit off and reflected poorly on him personally, especially the key quote "I've got to believe that our players, and as a staff, as a program, we're not happy with teams celebrating on our ice surface and going off the ice yipping and hooting and hollering." First, it's factually incorrect, the fight broke out immediately after the final buzzer, there was no going off the ice. Second, you can't tell visiting teams not to celebrate. Third, the appropriate thing to do is at least make a nod in the direction of saying that people shouldn't fight. So I'm not surprised to see poor judgment in other areas.

Yeah, based on the story, Nate got what he deserved. You just cannot treat your kids like that, any sport or any gender, period. I've always supported our coaching staff, but had no idea this was going on behind the scenes. I feel for the girls because they should never have been treated that way and now they have to start over with a new coach. If the athletic administration doesn't make the right hire it will set the program back for years to come.

I had heard about All Seasons but the women's program at Minnesota State is now moving to Verizon Wireless Center, so All Seasons is no longer part of the debate.

Any idea who those candidates are? This hire will give a clear indication as to what the athletic administration's expectations are for the program. Gene Smith always says he expects all our programs to contend for championships. We'll see if this hire backs that up or if they end up setting the program back.

Doesn't surprise me at all. The 2015 recruiting class was the best in quite some time and I have no doubt that rival coaches are trying to poach them, which is why it is paramount that tOSU make a decision on a new coach soon. Otherwise, the program will be buried for years.

Not sure there is a right or wrong way timing wise. Remember the "potentially premature" over reaction dismissal at UNH a few years ago. There is something to be said for proper due process. Based on the content of the article, there were some meetings held following the initial complaints, and presumably people were being put on notice/watch/warning as a result back in November while the investigation was ongoing. While I know nothing about this case other than what is written in the article, kudos to the University to follow proper due process, and then deal with what they felt was the right approach, as opposed to the other two options.... Overreaction quick firing/dismissal (UNH) OR sweep under the carpet (Penn State).

In addition, in general, making a coaching change at the end of a season is in general the least disruptive to a program.
