2015-2016 Coaching Changes

Re: 2015-2016 Coaching Changes

I doubt the Colgate, RIT, and UVM coaches are at risk. Be very surprised if any of those got the ax. Union, Providence, RPI for sure at risk. MN State - no idea.

Read Deraney has a contract through 2017 so doubt he'll go anywhere for now. Was a little surprised (and disappointed) to see their record for the past few years. Seems once their stellar goalie graduated they've struggled which would leave you to wonder if she was the biggest reason for their success along the way.

Heard (but still have not confirmed) that RPI AD extended Burke's contract last summer (while heading out the door for Air Force!!) which would be bull sh** seeing as he has a losing record and was dead last in NCAA in PP this year!

Know people have been calling for Union to make a change for a while. I give the players credit for playing hard every game and kudos to their goalie who kept them in games every weekend.

Colgate, RIT, and UVM have only been in their respective jobs (RIT at D1) for three years and too early to say. Colgate certainly has been recruiting quality players the last few years and UVM coach just needs more time - great guy/coach. RIT had a large group graduate last year after they won the CHA so would expect them to rebuild again.

Re: 2015-2016 Coaching Changes

RIT? Really? They won their division last year, and still have a .431 wins percentage. Possibly a building year, but still, being a team that is 3 years young in Division 1, I think this coach is doing very well.

My list was just of the bottom teams in their conference, no other criteria. RIT fell into that category this year. What would be considered a reasonable amount of time for a new program to be successful in D1? I think 2 more years for RIT thus short leash.

There's going to be an incredible amount of pressure on the incoming Freshman class. They are bringing in 9 to replace 7 graduating plus one or two that will not return. This past year's freshman class was not strong and the graduating class was the glue for this team. Very difficult to replace.

If a coach is judged by both performance and quality of recruiting, next year is a do or die year for the program.

They lost a stellar goalie, all teams lose quality players every year. Looking at my list of this years bottom programs, which school has recruited players to get them out of the cellar? I don't see a lot of Blue Chips on their rosters in years to come.

Anyone know the contract status of any of these coaches?

Actually they won the CHA last year, but because they were still within their probationary term for DI status (as I understand it) the did not get a birth to the NCAA tournament. If you look at their overall record, they are third in wins within teams of the CHA (fuzzy math I know but just saying). I think that this coach has done a pretty darn good job with what he has.

Also, when could RIT start offering athletic scholarships? I think most of this team was probably recruited with no athletic aid?

Just like Union, nobody at RIT gets athletic aid. It has to follow the D3 rules.

RIT is pushing the NCAA for a change.

Re: 2015-2016 Coaching Changes

Providence - This was the 5 year extension at PC for Coach Deraney a few years ago. One of the measures here might be if any players transfer out of the program this year. Future recruiting classes posted here on the forum are not very strong right now compared to the past. Program does appear to changing focus onto the NE and Canada for recruiting.

I don't know the answer to that since the rest of their sports (other than men's and women's hockey) are all DIII. I believe that they will be similar to the Ivies when it comes to recruiting with Financial Aid & Grants. Let's face it, teams carrying 23-27 on their rosters how many of those are getting a full ride? If people are honest (which I find is the exception not the rule) they are not getting a ton of athletic money unless they have been on the USA roster and then they are "full ride" candidates otherwise a 50% or even 66% is extremely generous. Is that how you see it?

Well, at the time of the article things weren't bad. It has been all downhill since then and contracts almost always have a buyout clause which should be getting cheaper by the year....

Well, if they have no athletic schoalrships, they are in a difficult recruiting position because they are not grandfathered like some of the other DI/DIII schools - similiar to Union.

You are correct none receive athletic aid but our players usually get scholarships for academics. But we also have the disadvantage because our school is expensive to attend not as expensive as Union but over $40,000 in tuition and other fees just for freshman year since it is mandatory in NY to have freshman live in the dorms unless their permanent residence is within a 25 mile radius of the school.

Re: 2015-2016 Coaching Changes

Interesting, seems like the MSU program was on the right track. I would guess that there are other coaches with contracts nearing end of term??

I don't know her but watching Brown, it's really hard to win without talent. And she had very little to work with. Whether that's on her or her assistants is anyone's guess. Claudia Asano is going through much the same at Union. Maybe it's an administration issue?

I don't know about Union, but in talking with Murphy it's real difficult to get players in?

Do you know what the maximum academic scholarship amount would be?

Re: 2015-2016 Coaching Changes

None - can get a full ride if personal finances and academic achievement justify it.

In addition, there are plenty of girls who get more academic money than athletic money even at DI schools that do offer athletic money. Academic money sure does help DI schools who cannot offer athletic money, but only merit scholarships, grants and aid. I've spoken to friends whose daughters are getting more academic money than athletic money even at some of the top DI schools.

Union and Brown really are up against it. Not only are they competing with the top Ivy's for recruit's, but also the NESCAC is probably grabbing alot of players that could easily contribute to those programs.

I always wondered about the 2 for 4 or the 3 for 4 Athletic scholarship. Does the athlete qualify, or is he or she allowed to apply for financial aid for any years not covered.
