2015-2016 Coaching Changes

Re: 2015-2016 Coaching Changes

I always wondered about the 2 for 4 or the 3 for 4 Athletic scholarship. Does the athlete qualify, or is he or she allowed to apply for financial aid for any years not covered.

Interesting question. I would assume that if you had financial need beyond the scholarship award in a given year that you would be eligible for "standard" financial aid. I know of a couple of cases where girls were recruited walk-ons at various schools and told that they hockey program would "help them" through the financial aid process.

What exactly is a "recruited walk-on"? Aren't you either a recruit or a walk-on?

There is a definitely a difference between the walk-on and the non-scholarship recruit. The difference lies within the admission's process. It's always been my understanding that the walk-on is on there own as far as getting accepted by the College or University. The player may get a handshake and a wink from the coach and told that there is a spot on the team if they are admitted. Where as the non-scholarship recruit is getting coach support through the admissions process and some level of committment as far as where they may fit in on the team.

To simplify: the walk-on has not been recruited by the coaching staff and shows up at tryouts.

Ohio State begins search for new head coach. Nate Handrahan "resigns" today.

You are spot on with the quotes around the word resigned. This was forced, it was not by choice. Assistant coach Keith Maurice was also forced to resign. Another "brilliant" move by our athletic department. I think Gene Smith is trying to bury both of our hockey programs. This is a sad day. Clearly, Nate Handrahan had the program moving in the right direction, not to mention the recruiting class he had coming in for next season was arguably his best. I hope they still keep their commitments, but I can't blame them if they ask to be let out of their LOI's.

This is very unexpected news. Something unusual must have happened that caused this decision. Time will tell. I bet Shannon Miller never expected so many jobs to open up in the WCHA this year. Too bad she's killing her potential to be hired somewhere else with all this negative attention. You reap what you sow in life.

Ohio State has the cash to throw at Shannon Miller, but she would never come here because I don't think she would want to deal with our athletic department continually treating our hockey programs as an afterthought, and I wouldn't blame her. Gene Smith is burying both of our hockey programs, and it's really sad.

So what's going on at "The OSU" anyway? Next fall will see the third head coach in the last 6 years. Are the inmates running the prison? That would be an alert to any head coach candidate considering the job.

This along with Means departure from Mankato are head scratchers. Both have some excellent talent just getting started and appeared to have a brighter future than past. Neither has been on the job long enough to have a decent evaluation of their abilities. It's just odd.

Re: 2015-2016 Coaching Changes

Means was at Minnesota State as the head coach for six years. That's plenty of time, you need to be winning more than 3 games on year six. Not that big of a head scratcher.

Why do they keep saying 'resigned' when they are actually fired? Or people on this forum make it sound like they were fired. Maybe they really did resign. Are there legal implications. How about 'relieved of their duties?'

The way I understand it (and I may be mistaken, so apologies in advance :o ) : A firing usually involves some type of contract buyout clause; if the coach resigns, there's no buyout involved.

Shocking. They have some of the best 97, 98 and 99 PWHL players committed over the next few years. Program was heading in the right direction.

They are on the upswing. Some good recruits coming in. They underperformed the past four years for a number of reasons, none of which were due to lack of resources or administration. This resignation was not caused by a player revolt or parents, but some mistakes that Coach Handrahan made on his own. This move needed to be done. OSU is a great university and destination for college hockey player's. They will continue to improve the program.

Agreed. There is no question Nate Handrahan had the program moving in the right direction. Anyone who says or thinks otherwise is just ignoring facts. This was only his fourth season. Then again, that's one more season than Gene Smith gave our men's coach. Smith fired Mark Osiecki after only three seasons.

At a certain point the AD has to take responsibility. But with the glorious season they had in football any issues they've been having with their hockey programs will be overlooked.

I agree with some of what you said, but you couldn't be more wrong on the resources statement. Have you been to the OSU Ice Rink lately? It's easily the worst facility in the WCHA, so I will have to just respectfully disagree with your contention that our women's hockey program has been provided with all the resources they needed to compete with the Minnesotas and Wisconsins of the world. Ever been to LaBahn? Ridder? Amsoil Arena? The Ralph? Attend a game at one of those arenas, then come back to Columbus and tell me Ohio State has the resources they need to compete. I just hope Gene Smith brings in someone who can salvage this recruiting class. It was arguably Nate's best class, and I am sure other coaches are on their phones right now trying to get them to de-commit.
