That happens anywhere though. Look at Jan fan (some of them) defending Aaron Marvin's hit and any number of other questionable hits that are defended by the hometown fans on this site.
I had completely forgotten about that hit. Wow, dredging up ancient history now.

Re: 2014 Stanley Cup - Don't Toews me, man!!!

The "Wakey Wakey" imo is classic and Backes deserves it. Who knows what else was said in that game or in the past? Chirping happens and the bleeding hearts can just get over it coz we don't hear 99.9% of what's said out there.

Btw, reports are that Backes was challenging Toews to a fight which led him to getting chirped.

Seriously. Bunch of babies. You should hear what my kid tells me is said in his high school games.

It's hockey Nancys.

so when your kid is lying unconscious on the ice and opposing players are mocking him, you'd call him a Nancy and tell him to suck it up?

mocking an injured player isn't just "chirping". it's being a classless idiot and waste of a human being.

I have no dog in this fight, but IMO, you do not. mock. someone. with. an. injury. especially a head injury. how hard is that to understand?

My point is to have OUTRAGE over something that one player said to another when we all know that far worse is said every game is hypocritical and Nancy-like.

Wasn't calling Backes a Nancy. Just the fans and their arbitrary outrage over situations like this.

If we knew half of what goes on out there, it's likely we'd have trouble sleeping at night.

Trust me, the bad blood between the Blues and the Hawks has been growing for years and any chirping that happened in Saturday's game didn't fall out of a vacuum. I'm sure its been a long time coming and the Blues (including Backes) certainly have played their part in all of this.

so it's OK to be a dbag if you point at the other guy and say HE STARTED IT? maybe if you're an 8 year old. still not OK to mock someone with an injury. different than just chirping. did Backes mock someone who was unconscious? if he did, does doing it back to him make everything even? IMO, it just makes both guys idiots, instead of one guy.

It's reality is what it is. Maybe an uncomfortable reality for some?

Backes was up and lurching towards Toews when the wakey wakey happened, so not technically "unconscious."

I'm just saying that this is a heated rivalry that's getting hotter by the year. We ain't seen nothing yet out of these two teams.

People point to the Avs/Wings rivalry from a few years ago as maybe the best ever. How did that start? A cheap shot and escalating retaliation. Hardly the pillars of sportsmanship but even the talking heads cite it as one of the best ever.

It was BRUTAL. Think any unfortunate and quite possibly classless things were said over the course of that rivalry?

Think someone got hit hard, had a hard time getting up and was called a wussie by an opponent?

Again, Keith or whomever said it didn't come up with that comment/chirp/worst words ever uttered in a vacuum.

Re: 2014 Stanley Cup - Don't Toews me, man!!!

Gurt: again, just chirping is different than doing it to an injured player. the guy who said it is likely one injury away from spending the rest of his life as a pathetic drunk townie, telling stories in dive bars every night about how he used to be somebody. And they're ALL one dirty hit away from spending the rest of their lives trying to remember their names and what day it is. have a little more respect, because injuries can happen to everyone. NO ONE is exempt from injury, no matter how good you are, so mocking a guy that obviously just suffered one is completely classless - no excuses.

Re: 2014 Stanley Cup - Don't Toews me, man!!!

Fair enough.

I don't disagree that it's classless. Of course it is. I just don't see it as any big deal (on the classless scale) and whether people like it or not, at times it's part of sports.

These guys are going to war with each other and both sides are taking shots at each other. It's probably pretty hard to just turn that switch off in the middle of a scrum that comes in the middle of a game. It's brutal out there.

Had someone said "wakey wakey" to Backes while he was laying on the ice out cold or while he was being taken out on a stretcher, I'd share in the outrage.

The hit was the big deal and justice has been served. Everything else is window dressing that people can choose to get upset about if they want.

Exactly.

And Gurt, I don't get the connection. What the hell does the fact that players chirp have to do with classless behavior by fans like printing or wearing those shirts? I'm well aware that players chirp on the ice. It doesn't take pros, or even juniors for that, it starts in squirts or mites.

By the way, thank you for noting the classy behavior of Minnesota fans. I know it is well recognized, but I wasn't sure you were smart enough to note it. :p

I guess I needed to mark it somehow as sarcasm?

You'll have that in any group and yes, it's poor behavior. Classless, even.

You honestly think I'd consider buying one of those shirts?

Re: 2014 Stanley Cup - Don't Toews me, man!!!

Why not? It's just part of the harmless fun of a rivalry.:D

Actually putting it on right now. Almost game time... :p

Did I ever tell the story about North Star fans rocking me back and forth in the outhouse in the Met Center lot? :D
