2014 Frozen Four

Re: 2014 Frozen Four

Congratulations to our brothers in New England. I have traveled in that area in the summer. Never in the winter.
I have it from good sources that there is not very good accommodations in that area. And forget 40 minutes from Portland.
We traveled to Minneapolis 3 years ago and it was great. We have been to Placid two previous times and this was great.
I can't help to think that people in the Midwest are not happy. When you travel to a resort town , like Placid or a great city like Minneapolis the hotels and resturants are very good.
How could Mr Olson and the NCAA committee suggest that this venue is good for student athletes and their families. If they chose even Boston, with their very good resturants and hotels it would have been light years better.
This reminds us of the mindless selection of Superior Wisconsin 6 years ago.

There is a concept hear that nobody seems to understand -- apparently, Bowdoin were the ONLY ONES to put in a bid. (Apparently, there was a western bid, but it did not qualify on the basic requirements.)

The NCAA can't pick someone who does NOT PUT IN A BID.

So, everyone stop b*tching at the NCAA for selecting the only bid available.

Re: 2014 Frozen Four better option

Re: 2014 Frozen Four better option

I know I'm biased, but Elmira's downtown arena is a better choice in terms of driving distances - especially for the SNC fans. And it's within 500 miles of Adrian.

Elmira was a great site when they hosted. However, I heard through the grapevine that the downtown arena does not have the requirements now necessary to host a championship. Which surprises me, but that's what I heard.

Re: 2014 Frozen Four

A quick look on Hotels.com shows there are 5 available hotels within 6 miles. 2 3-star hotels and the rest 2 and 2.5-stars. Average rate for the Final Four weekend if it was held their THIS year is about $95 a night. There seems to be more 15+ miles away from Lewiston. Not a booming metropolis but seems like a decent quiet town. A lot of people want these big cities but you're there for hockey games. All you need is a rink, some beds, warm showers, food and a decent size bar. Make your own experiences.

and we are lucky they did. Lake Placid was going to go with a 3 year deal with the ECAC because the DIII might have either gone west (turns out no viable bid) or been combined with the DI games (turns out no). LP looked out for themselves.

I think the question now becomes who will work out a bid for 2015, since they have an extra year to plan.

...after checking out the logistics for 2014, I would support Oz putting in a bid for '15, but it probably depends more on who is named AD this spring than anything else...

Re: 2014 Frozen Four

As long as we're dreaming, how about Castleton State putting in a bid to host at Gutterson fieldhouse? In UVM's current state, they won't have many home games in March in the near future!!! (This is TIC - I know UVM would never allow this!)

Re: 2014 Frozen Four

...that's a possibility...I was thinking it would be nice to have it on campus...

Unfortunately, it seems the NCAA now requires a minimum of 3000 seats.

Sadly true........ if they ever built that arena at the Champlain fairgrounds, that becomes a possibility though.....

OK, how about the Bell Centre in Montreal? They must have an airport somewhere in that city....and probably a few hotels and restaurants.

And most D3 communities are in out of the way, small locales.

I really wish Utica would put in a bid. To me, it would be a slam dunk on so many levels. But, apparently the Aud doesn't want to lock up the facility for a weekend (though, Lake Placid is still able to have a youth tournament going on at the same time, so there are ways to work around it). And, I sure hope the Aud isn't balking because they won't be able to sell alcohol... (Are they allowed to sell alcohol for the high school games? I got to think not, and if that's the case, what's the big deal we keep hearing about no alcohol at the Aud for NCAA playoff games?)

If the Utica Aud ever did host the championship, they would be the second rink to ever host a D1 and D3 Frozen Four, Lake Placid currently being the only one.

I was told it was capacity, not seats at the time the building was developed, which is why it was built to 3,000....maybe its changed since then? If you can have 500 standing around the rink, I wonder if could add risers, seats and bleachers to the south concourse to make 3,000 seats? (Hmmmmm....drifting back to sleep...)

According to the Oswego website, the ice rink holds 3,000 (2,500 seats, 500 standing room).

I brought up the idea of Oswego hosting the last time I was there, and I was told, though some prominent locals would like to put in a bid, the school doesn't feel they have the resources to pull it off. Plus, there is a concern about motel space (though Syracuse is only half an hour away).

As for those proposing D1 rinks (I once suggested Potsdam hosting at Clarkson's Cheel Arena and I see someone suggested Castleton proposing UVM's Gutterson), I heard unofficially that the NCAA would prefer if it is on campus to be in D3 rinks, which of course is counter to when they were at UM's Ridder Arena.

One way to solve that problem is to push the D3 championships out a week. With the schedule now starting a couple of weeks later, why not? It was going to be a whole month later when initially combined with D1. And I feel the NCAA and D3 hockey gets a lot of mileage playing their championships at Lake Placid.

I'll be with the AD and Prez (College Prez..not THE Prez) Saturday - let's see what they have to say...

If you're talking about some being concerned about hotels within 30 minutes, Oswego hosting shouldn't be an issue. There aren't a ton of hotels in Oswego, but there are some. You also have some in Fulton (10 minutes south), then in the Clay and Cicero areas (25 minutes south). The number of bars in Oswego should fill one requirement. :)

I've always felt than a small rink that hold 3000 that is packed full would be much better than a rink that holds 10,000 that's half full. In that respect, the campus center would be a great venue...if it has the required seating capacity.
