Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

Tough game this afternoon. I thought there were stretches where the Gophers did not look very good but that may be Wisconsin's "fault". Then the dreaded home run derby for a "win". (pro tip to you young netminders: fall on the puck & hide it under your body, apparently even though your entire body is in the net the refs can't call it a goal because they can't see the puck in the net!)

My guess is we will play the Badgers a couple more times this year, lets hope they continue not winning against us.

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

That was a fun weekend of hockey. The Gophers were the better team yesterday and got the win. The Badgers were the better team today and have to settle for a tie. Honestly, I didn't think Leveille looked that good today. She made a lot of first stops but left a lot of pucks sitting out front that the defense had to clear and she really needed to come out to play the puck in her zone while the Gophers were on the power play in overtime. McMillen still shouldn't have taken the even up penalty but that wasn't the big problem.

The officiating today was godawful bad. If Wisconsin runs into a crew that actually calls interference they could have a problem. The call in OT was absolutely a penalty but they hadn't called it all game. Given how egregious it was it needed to be called anyway but not any more so than several calls they didn't make. The no calls also led to another problem, namely that Badger players got hurt a couple of times when Minnesota players reacted in frustration to uncalled penalties. Channell took a nasty cross check to the back of the head from Cameranesi after she blatantly hauled Cameranesi down with no penalty. I don't know whether or not the ref saw it but he'd left himself in a position where he couldn't really call anything if he did because of what he'd let go.

WCHA refs have got to start calling penalties when they happen. Their refusal to do so is causing all sorts of problems.

She probably should have, but it isn't her responsibility to go chase the puck out to the circle and find that she has no outlet for it because everyone either went to change or stood and watched. She's better off in the net without the puck than at the top of the circle with a forechecker on her and no place to pass it. As for the first stops, she had to make a lot of them because her teammates kept turning the puck over. Wisconsin is very good at putting shots on the goalie where they know she has to yield a rebound of some sort.

I agree; they'd be better off calling something. At least send two players to the box to cool off for a couple of minutes so they know that you're still watching. As I watched the replay of yesterday with Rachel Jones plowing into Leveille twice on one shift, I thought that nothing good can result in the game of hockey from rewarding a team for running into the goalie, which is what Spivey did. He should have blown the whistle on the second one. He didn't need to call a penalty, but if he doesn't at least stop play, he's encouraging more goalie contact and the shenanigans that follow.

I have to disagree with you, Eeyore, about Leveille not looking that good today. And obviously the people who award the Stars of the Game thought enough of her play to name her the No. 1 Star - for BOTH games this weekend. When you hold a high-powered offensive team like Wisconsin (which coming in was averaging about 5 goals a game) to a single goal you give your team a great chance to win, and that's exactly what she did.

She did enough to get the 5 standings points, which is probably the most important thing, but it felt that she needed a lot of help from her teammates to block shots and cleanup the fat rebounds of which Eeyore was referring.

All that said, with BSU splitting with UMD, UND splitting with Syracuse, MSU splitting with Lindenwood, and OSU using two goaltenders against SCSU, I would not be at all surprised if Amanda gets named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week.

It's hard to play tough opponents. You won't always look perfectly in control. Hannah screwed up at times, more than we are used to seeing, but in games like this where you're pushed to the limit for the whole game, mistakes happen. I think we need to think back to some past years where we didn't have to worry about a rebound because the puck was already in the net on the first shot when we played the Badgers. Eleven of 12 points from Bucky? I'll take it every time and no angst from me. :)

Oh, and props to Sidney Baldwin. The kid was stuck out there for what felt like a 3-minute shift late in the 2nd period, and she kept battling. Everybody else had changed, but the puck never got deep enough for her to make the long change. When there was finally a whistle, it seemed like all she could do to just skate to the bench. I like the motor though.

She may also possess the heaviest wrist shot on the team.

Yes, we are spoiled, I admit it. But I also remember a few years earlier when the puck went into the 'wrong' net more times than the right one so I am also Ok with 11/12. That said I think we have seen Leveille look better and seen the whole team look more animated than what we saw yesterday. But thats OK too I remember games Raty was not in top form, it happens to everyone.

Wisconsin isn't the best scoring team, but they are close! We didn't play our best game and we held them to one goal, hats off to the Gophs again!!

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

Do the Gopher women have a skate with the Gophers event like the men's team?

spot on, that's what happens when they let something go, but perhaps you missed the cross check to the back of the neck Ammerman delivered to a Gopher who was completely out of the play getting off the ice near the bench on Sat., the Gopher right behind her showed good discipline to not immediately retaliate, but players remember those sort of things

On Saturday I thought she was the best blueliner out there, for either team. And that's saying a lot given the players on both teams. Wolfe also played very well, if there was any question remaining whether she should be playing forward or defense it was answered this weekend, and it looks like she is putting her offensive talent to use after initially holding back the first few games, which was understandable, I'd say the Gophers are sitting pretty good with the 6 defenders they have. The Badgers may have looked like they were outplaying the Gophers at times Sunday, but the defense and Leveille kept them to One, and that's the only number that matters.
Now I see why other fans get so excited over an SO win, seems like your team won, when it really didn't.

KARE11 will have a feature on Amanda Leveille on tonight's 10:00pm sports segment. Word has it that the Minnesota Wild may be interested in signing her to a tryout contract in the very near future.

Cool, thanks for the heads up!

Be ready, in case they pronounce it Lavelle-(maybe they fixed it).

You called it, KTDC. Jeez, you would think they would learn how to pronounce the last name of someone they were running a feature on.

I guess the good news is that they gave her and the team some well-deserved attention. Then again, the bad news is that most sports fans within KARE11's viewing area were tuned into ESPN, so not too many people saw it.

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

Kudos to Sam Gordon of the Pioneer Press for his two fine articles on the games this weekend. Especially liked where he wrote "Leveille ended it (the shootout) with three hellacious saves." Yes, they were hellacious as were several others during the game! I don't think I have ever been so grateful for a tie. It was nice to see the recognition of the 2005 team. I happened to be standing next to Charlie Burggraf when the players were being announced. Nice memories of a great team and season. The Harvard game has to be one of the best ever!
