Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

On a personal note, I'm safely at home. My car now has 2,610 more miles on it than this time last week, but (thankfully) there were no issues -- either mechanical or meteorological. :)
Love the road trip. Brings back memz of when me and Joe took the Greyhound to Minneapolis for BC vs. Minnesota back in, what, 2008?

The only negative being they made you put away your horn, if I recall correctly.

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

If you didn't see my Facebook post, I had fun on Sunday chatting with a family from Long Island. One of the teenage daughters is a follower of the Gophers after having become a huge fan of Megan Bozek and Amanda Kessel. So they had decided to also drive to Princeton to catch the game. The daughter is apparently a fan of Dan's online audio as well... she was listening to Dan's play-by-play while watching the action.

:o

I like this story. It's nice to think of a teenage girl in NY becoming a fan of GWH and taking advantage of an opportunity to go see them when they are in the region! Bringing her audio along to listen to Dan is a great detail as well.

There was something that went on with that... I can't remember if it was the regular season series of the NCAA regional a year or two after, but I remember being on the phone with someone or other at BC who was trying to get my permission at Minnesota. I don't remember the end result though...

I have to imagine should BC make it to Ridder this year that BC would send a band. I'm fairly certain they did last time.

I'm not familiar with that story - who made you put it way? What kind of horn? Been to most games for the last 8 years & don't recall ever hearing a horn without a band. This sounds like a no fun thing they did.

Road teams never have a band at regular-season games. I think it isn't part of the program, so there is no space for the away band to play during breaks, because the band numbers and announcements are all scripted. For a tournament game, road teams can have a band, but it has to be sanctioned by the school. That's how I remember it going down at the time and why you weren't allowed to play.

One of the very, very, very few arenas that didn't allow me to play. FUN POLICE!

It's a pocket trumpet -- full sized trumpet with the tubing wound up extra tight so it's really tiny.

It doesn't explain any of us, unless they're very low standards. :o

Hah! Truer words... This discussion made me look at the Ridder Arena Fan Guide. It does sort of require "muted" enjoyment. To quote the Prohibited Items/Restrictions paragraph:

"In the interest of guest safety and enjoyment the University of Minnesota reserves the right to prevent certain items from entering or being used at any facility. These include, but are not limited to: ... noisemakers; .... At the same time, other items that may risk the safety or viewing/listening enjoyment of the guests may be prohibited."

My guess is that someone classified TTT's classical musical instrument as a noisemaker, although it is possible that they decided it endangered the listening enjoyment of the other patrons after hearing it played.

While I rip on TTT a lot, there is no doubt that he is talented when it comes to playing his trumpet, and people whose ears are better judges of music than mine have said so.

I hope I didn't leave the impression that TTT was a bad player. It's just that most of the staff there is probably in their 20's and likely base their music appreciation on rap.

I bet if he had played 'The Rouser' or 'Hail Minnesota' the authorities wouldn't have treated it as musical genius instead of a noisemaker. Maybe next time (this March perhaps?) he could start with those two, see if everything's kosher, then move on to playing his normal repertoire.
