Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!
Doocy is a great example of the Peter Principle. They kept promoting him until they found a job he couldn't do.
That was a horribly officiated game. I don't think either team really benefited from it as the blown calls seemed to even out but some of the non-calls were just stupefying. In the end I guess Wisconsin probably got the better of the bad calls but that's only because when penalties are seemingly handed out at random, the team that got the most power plays was probably the beneficiary.
I didn't see any shifts for #3, #15, or #27.
None of us there saw any, either. Time for me to start grumbling . . .
I thought the addition of Menefee to the lineup was extremely helpful. The extra solid veteran presence made, I thought, a big difference compared to what we saw last weekend in Duluth.
I don't think it was veteran presence. I think it was chemistry. The first line of Brandt/Menefee/Cameranesi just looked like they were on the same page in a way that none of the line combinations the last couple of weeks have. Part of it, I think, is that Brandt and Cameranesi benefit from a mucker like Menefee that they can play off of.
And I think some of the line combinations after that benefited as well. This was Rachel Bona's best game of the year and I think that was due to her playing with a better pair of linemates more than not having played as well the last couple of weeks.
I said the same thing last year after the 'Fill The Bowl' game: I don't understand how anybody ever beats, or ties, these Gopher teams. Do they get bored or lackadaisical occasionally against other teams? How in the world did that team need two late goals to tie Duluth? Why can't the show up 'bored' against Wisconsin every once in a while?
Take it as a compliment. This was the best game the Gophers have played since that Fill the Bowl game and it isn't even close. No one else really scares Minnesota like Wisconsin does. Looking at the record you might think that North Dakota should, but they don't. Week in and week out, the Gophers get the best game every other team has. Wisconsin is the team that does the same with us. If you're going to beat us, it will mean that you played your A game.
Now my own comments:
Wow. This was a completely different team than the one that played in Duluth last week. I don't mean that as criticism, because no one, individual or team, in the world can deliver 100% every day on the job. But when the Gophers do deliver 100%, they will bury you. This year's team is not as good as the last couple of years, but that doesn't mean that they can't deliver a best in the country performance.
Every player that took a shift tonight looked good. Kate Schipper and Kelly Pannek were both THIS close to scoring. Sydney Baldwin is the best freshman defenseman I've seen since the Lee Stecklein era. The forecheck and the backcheck tonight looked a lot like last year, which is high praise in my book.
Honestly, I didn't think Wisconsin played that badly. Not great, but not the sort of game where you expect to get steamrolled. The Badgers didn't get anything done in transition. Kelsey Cline has made big strides defensively and consistently played 1-on-1 break-ins perfectly. It's just a joy to watch the bottom half of this roster put things together, and it's a part of the reason why I was disappointed that Haley, Flug, and Rodgers didn't get ice time.
And the penalty kill is ferocious. It didn't matter who was in the box tonight; the players that were left just turned Wisconsin inside out. Technically, the Badger power play was -1 for 6, though their only goal came after Rachel Bona's penalty was over but before she stepped onto the ice. On the other hand, that power play went absolutely nowhere until the last 15 seconds and Wisconsin didn't do much else with the man advantage all night. (And it did seem like they had it all night.)
The other thing is how opportunistic the Gophers are. Through five games, they've scored with less than a minute left in a period three times, twice with less than 5 seconds to go. That's a good way to bury teams.
