I did the Big Ten package, so I'm good either way. …

Edit: although all I get is a an ad. :(

Looks like Menefee starting tonight. My video is up and running.

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

High def picture. I just rigged up the laptop and HDMI cable and the game is now streaming on the 55 inch big screen.

This is an upgrade.

I took the $15 package, still a reasonable deal.

I guess Doocy thought the Badgers should have a 20 minute PP...

Doocy is a great example of the Peter Principle. They kept promoting him until they found a job he couldn't do.

Nice W for the Gophs. As D2D noted...their best effort thus far. Right when they needed it.

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

I didn't see any shifts for #3, #15, or #27.

Nor did I. It's great to have that kind of depth, because all those held out this evening bring unique talents to the Gophers' game. If Frost decides to insert them into tomorrow's lineup, they will no doubt add some energy and help keep Wisconsin on their heels. I would expect the Badgers to ramp it up several notches tomorrow evening, and the Gophs will need every bit of available energy to come away with a sweep on the Badgers' home ice which, needless to say - if accomplished - would be huge.

Especially if Doocy keeps them shorthanded for most of the second period. That can tire a team out in a hurry.

While Wisconsin may have gotten some help from the officials, we got some help from the Badgers. Obviously, Burke wasn't quite ready for prime time on the Brandt goal, and I'm not sure why four of the Badgers thought they could go change and allow Cameranesi to waltz into the zone to score to make it 2-1. Lazy play for the first period when people shouldn't be that tired. Based on one game, the Minnesota PP is ahead of that of Wisconsin right now.

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

I thought the addition of Menefee to the lineup was extremely helpful. The extra solid veteran presence made, I thought, a big difference compared to what we saw last weekend in Duluth.

I thought Schipper was quite a bit better tonight than she has been over the first two weekends. Based on what we saw from her last season I think a lot of us have pretty high expectations. She came a lot closer tonight to living up to what we are hoping for. She didn't show up on the score sheet but I definitely saw her playing an aggressive and effective offensive game.

And I thought the frosh F who played, Pannek and Piazza, also showed significant progress.

It is an amazing thing to be able to have the likes of Ramsey, McMillen and Stecklein lurking back there on defense when you need them.

Leveille was the better goaler tonight, as she has been in every game but one of her Gopher career.

A very high quality win against a very high quality opponent.

Yep...strongly agree and had the same thought from the start.

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

Who scored the third goal for the Gophers? I know they gave it to McMillen, but she and Cameranesi both reacted as though it was #21. I've looked at the replay a bunch of times in slow motion, and I can't really see the puck, just both of them swiping at it simultaneously. If it is #21, then it is a hat trick for her.

I said the same thing last year after the 'Fill The Bowl' game: I don't understand how anybody ever beats, or ties, these Gopher teams. Do they get bored or lackadaisical occasionally against other teams? How in the world did that team need two late goals to tie Duluth? Why can't the show up 'bored' against Wisconsin every once in a while?

John Wooden used to have a saying for his players: Be quick, but don't hurry. The Gophers were quick, and the Badgers 'hurried'.

I'm expecting M.J. will make some adjustments for tomorrow's rematch. The Gophers put forth a tremendous effort tonight. Other than a couple of unnecessary/very questionable penalties taken, it's one of the smartest games I've seen the Gophers play, against a really good opponent. The question is, can they double down and even ramp it up even more tomorrow? There is no doubt the Badgers will be "totally amped" and will bring their "A+" game in the rematch, so the Gophers better be ready! Obviously this game will be pivotal in determining which team ends up winning the conference title.

yes, if they could be conned into thinking they were playing the Badgers every game, they would have gone undefeated last year too.
But I'm thinking the winning streak against the Badgers will end this year, hopefully not in the NCAA tournament

Doocy is a great example of the Peter Principle. They kept promoting him until they found a job he couldn't do.

That was a horribly officiated game. I don't think either team really benefited from it as the blown calls seemed to even out but some of the non-calls were just stupefying. In the end I guess Wisconsin probably got the better of the bad calls but that's only because when penalties are seemingly handed out at random, the team that got the most power plays was probably the beneficiary.

I didn't see any shifts for #3, #15, or #27.

None of us there saw any, either. Time for me to start grumbling . . .

I don't think it was veteran presence. I think it was chemistry. The first line of Brandt/Menefee/Cameranesi just looked like they were on the same page in a way that none of the line combinations the last couple of weeks have. Part of it, I think, is that Brandt and Cameranesi benefit from a mucker like Menefee that they can play off of.

And I think some of the line combinations after that benefited as well. This was Rachel Bona's best game of the year and I think that was due to her playing with a better pair of linemates more than not having played as well the last couple of weeks.

I said the same thing last year after the 'Fill The Bowl' game: I don't understand how anybody ever beats, or ties, these Gopher teams. Take it as a compliment. This was the best game the Gophers have played since that Fill the Bowl game and it isn't even close. No one else really scares Minnesota like Wisconsin does. Looking at the record you might think that North Dakota should, but they don't. Week in and week out, the Gophers get the best game every other team has. Wisconsin is the team that does the same with us. If you're going to beat us, it will mean that you played your A game.

Now my own comments:

Wow. This was a completely different team than the one that played in Duluth last week. I don't mean that as criticism, because no one, individual or team, in the world can deliver 100% every day on the job. But when the Gophers do deliver 100%, they will bury you. This year's team is not as good as the last couple of years, but that doesn't mean that they can't deliver a best in the country performance.

Every player that took a shift tonight looked good. Kate Schipper and Kelly Pannek were both THIS close to scoring. Sydney Baldwin is the best freshman defenseman I've seen since the Lee Stecklein era. The forecheck and the backcheck tonight looked a lot like last year, which is high praise in my book.

Honestly, I didn't think Wisconsin played that badly. Not great, but not the sort of game where you expect to get steamrolled. The Badgers didn't get anything done in transition. Kelsey Cline has made big strides defensively and consistently played 1-on-1 break-ins perfectly. It's just a joy to watch the bottom half of this roster put things together, and it's a part of the reason why I was disappointed that Haley, Flug, and Rodgers didn't get ice time.

And the penalty kill is ferocious. It didn't matter who was in the box tonight; the players that were left just turned Wisconsin inside out. Technically, the Badger power play was -1 for 6, though their only goal came after Rachel Bona's penalty was over but before she stepped onto the ice. On the other hand, that power play went absolutely nowhere until the last 15 seconds and Wisconsin didn't do much else with the man advantage all night. (And it did seem like they had it all night.)

The other thing is how opportunistic the Gophers are. Through five games, they've scored with less than a minute left in a period three times, twice with less than 5 seconds to go. That's a good way to bury teams.

I wouldn't call #14 a mucker. She has very good hands, so she can hang onto the puck in tight spaces.

This year's team is not as good as the last couple of years ...
Last year's team wasn't that good early. It was shaky in it's first week on the road. It was outplayed for long stretches in the home opener. It struggled in games against BSU and SCSU, neither of which was that good. Some of that was injuries, but this team has had to deal with some absences as well. It wasn't until after losing to UND and a couple months had passed that that team consistently started to look better than this one, which has had to start with a tougher schedule. Similar teams, but both UMD and UW are better than they were at this time last year. And we didn't have to face people like Poulin and Lefort so early.

Sydney Baldwin is the best freshman defenseman I've seen since the Lee Stecklein era.
In other words, she's better than any freshman defenseman from last year. :D It seems longer ago, but it is only two years since #2 was a rookie herself.

Through five games, they've scored with less than a minute left in a period three times, twice with less than 5 seconds to go.
Four times (3 seconds to go in the second period versus BU, 17 seconds left in period two in the second game in Duluth, final second of the first period in Madison, and with 40 seconds left in the second period).
