2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

I would imagine that the teams making the final four will get an allotment of tickets to sell to their fan base.
But mostly even that minuscule allotment will not sell out. If Wisconsin makes it that allotment will most likely sell out. However, none of the three Boston teams nor the Connecticut team for that matter with their usual home game attendance of 250 or so seems likely to need all of the tickets they will be allotted for games in Minneapolis. Clarkson? Maybe, they are, after all, the defending national champions but personally I doubt they would use the full allotment.

It seems likely that there will be tickets returned from the allotments for the participating teams. That means that there will most probably be some sort of market for tickets first at the Gopher ticket office until right up to about game time and even after that probably on the street in front of Ridder Arena.

Very true, but I do think that once the announcement is made locally that (if and when) the Gophers are in the FF, the demand for tickets that are put on the market will overwhelm any returned allotments. This will, in turn, only cause the price for any current holders (who are willing to sell their supply) to rise from where the market price is at today. Then again, if the Gophers should lose to RIT, all bets are off and you'll be looking at a "Bear Market" for the price of FF tickets.

Last time I went to the FF, had no problem getting tickets at the gate or for cheap. Mind you that was in the east, with the local team not in it.

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

The last time the finals were here, scalpers were asking $150 per ticket out front. They seemed to be getting it, too.

but that was with an undefeated team

plenty of people who had never watched a women's game wanted to be there to ... well, be there and never be seen again

prices outside Ridder for the final:
MN in the final = 100 bucks
WI in final = 40 bucks
BU or RIT = a buck or 2

Two Golden Gopher alums, Kelly Terry and Sarah Davis, have been named to Canada's National Women's Team and will compete in the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship from March 28-April 4 in Malmo, Sweden

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

by Canadian standards, yes

RIT sounds suspiciously like RPI.

In case you are not familiar, RPI, way back in 1953, beat the men’s team to claim the national championship. They were just the first of many schools, that either nobody had ever heard of (Union, Merrimac, Holy Cross, etc.), or just weren’t known for sports (Harvard, Yale, etc.) that became well known overnight for beating the Gophers (or from a different perspective, the Gophers choking).
At one time nobody knew who or what UND & UMD were.

With less than 2 decades of history the women’s team could be said to be working on their own list. Most recently of coarse is Clarkson (and let’s not quickly forget Bemidji), but there is also Niagara (OK, it was only the 3rd place game, and a tie, but still, Niagara?) and Mercyhurst. And of course UMD & UND.

And then there are the occasions this year where they control play and vastly outshoot the opposition, but find it hard to put the biscuit in the net.

So excuse me if I wait until the final buzzer and the rouser is played and the three stars of the game are all Gophers.

Funny but having watched UofM men for 50 years I knew darn well who UND was, they brought some of the finest 22 year old thugs down from Canada to play 19 year old Minnesotans. They have more WCHA and NCAA championships than Minnesota and that is probably not going to change. MN has not really been about titles, it has been all about promoting Minnesota hockey. I only know of one North Dakotan to ever win a WCHA or national title & he didn't play for ND. Hundreds of Minnesotans have won titles and it all boils down to Mariucci making the choice (back when such things were possible because money was not the object) to only recruit Minnesotans so that Minnesota kids would be motivated to be better. As for your other examples, ice hockey is a marginal sport in most of the country so eve the title holders are largely unknown.

Was just up at the Ralllfff last weekend & nothing highlights the difference in attitude like that. Mariucci arena has huge photos of All-Americans & Olympians, Ralllff has 30 foot high photos of guys hoisting the Stanley Cup. NoDak has a tradition of producing NHL players from kids that burned up their Junior eligibility, MN does not but I think the pressure on kids today means more of the MN kids are going jr and I think the expectations of Gopher fans will bring an end to the MN only recruiting after a few more seasons like this one.

Cool picture in the Strib today with Dani Cameransesi and the puck in front of the net surrounded by six RIT players!

Much better than average Strib piece on the game as well, I thought.

It's a matter of putting a full-time professional reporter on the story. Joe Christensen has been with the Strib for a number of years now, covering the Twins and Gopher football.

I enjoyed this article about Rachel Ramsey in the Strib this morning: http://www.startribune.com/sports/gophers/296295801.html

I was surprised after the regular season Saturday Bemidji game to hear her on K102 at about 5pm, that's only 1 hour after the game ended
even if they had a jet and limo at both airports, there is no way you could get somebody from there to here in that time
modern technology I guess
or did she skate back?

That have these things called "phone lines" that can carry voices across them to distant places. When they have the time to do it right you wouldn't necessarily know the person was not local. Not sure if you ever hear Tom Barnard on KQRS. He does his show from the basement of his house in Golden Valley most of the year and his Florida house the rest of the time while all the other clowns with him are at the studio in Mpls. I used to work at a small radio station and we carried Twins games via telephone lines.

In one interview I heard, she admitted that sometimes her stuff is taped ahead of time if there was a chance that she would not be able to get there quickly after a game.

You are right - I believe most of her time on K102 is taped ahead of time due to her school/hockey obligations. She's got a bright future in whatever she does!

Now, if only Paul Allen would stop with the Pronger with a Ponytail and "Its time to drop the puck!" She deserves better.

Winning the 1980 Olympics with so many Minnesotans on the roster should have put an the end to “Made In Minnesota” at the U of MN. Winning Gold affirmed that quality hockey players were being produced and there should have been no further need for “Made In MN”. Instead 1980 Gold caused some people to believe Minnesota was better than the rest, some talked and acted as if hockey were invented here, and felt the need apparently to prove it by winning with all Minnesotans.

Apparently the forever floundering Minnesota No-Stars weren’t enough to bring people back to reality that no, hockey was not invented here. Nor was over 2 decades of no NCAA championships enough, despite numerous championships by Wisconsin and North Dakota. It finally took a new coach (not a MN alumni) who brought in a kid from Grand Forks and another from across the big pond to get a championship for MN.

You’d think these folks would have learned by now. All those teams, especially in the 80’s, came sooo close, just one more kid, perhaps a Canuck, could have been the difference between winning and falling short.

It’s great that when Halldorson came she put an end to that nonsense for the women’s program. Just go out and get the best you can, and if Minnesota kids want to wear Maroon & Gold, they’ll have to put in the effort and dedication to earn their way on the team.

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

I sent a thank you note to Dane Mizutani for his very fine article in the Pioneer Press about the game on Saturday. Two colored photos no less. Too bad the Strib only had a black and white of Dani surrounded by six Tigers in their paper. It has to be one of my favorite hockey photos ever, especially in color. Loved the "fair fight" comment.

Never quite agreed with Wooger's Minnesotans only philosophy. Understood it, but didn't agree. I remember watching that kid from Canada play back when my older brother was at the U. He seemed to do okay and is still around I think. Big Potulny fan (both of them), but without the Man from St Paul, he never would have had the opportunity to score that winning goal. 25 Minnesotans and 2 or 3 from outside the state seems about right to me.

I'm "only" old enough to credit John Mariucci as the earlier proponent of the "Minnesota only plan" starting a kind of tradition that outlasted it's practicality.
