Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

I don't think it took a loss to Bemidji, even the first one, to know that this team isn't as deep as it was the last two years or that the goaltending isn't as good as it was with Noora in net. Neither of those things should have surprised anyone. Rather than being runaway favorites in the NCAA tournament, the Gophers are just one of 4-5 teams with a solid shot to win a national championship if they play hard and smart.

Today's loss doesn't change that equation at all or tell us anything we didn't already know.

Wow. Losing to Bemidji at this time of the year does not bode well for the Gophs. What is going on? I haven't listened to them for quite some time.

What we saw was exactly why the COTY award went to the right person. BSU played their game to perfection and got a lucky goal which was all they needed. I thought the Gophers played without any sense of urgency but that takes nothing away for the fact that the Beavers played a high-pressure, full-on, deep forecheck & made so few mistakes that they controlled the play for the entire game. I am not a fan of this style of hockey because it is not as much fun to watch as two high flying teams but since it allows less talented teams beat more talented ones I expect we will see a lot more of it in the future.

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

Two thoughts...

1) At one point, I bellowed out "Who replaced the puck with a Mexican jumping bean?" The turnover that led to the BSU goal was a whiffed pass. There were several other similar situations where Gophers had the puck jump a stick on them.

2) One of the big positives the past several seasons for Minnesota has been its speed. It felt like that speed was MIA today.

Also, I'm not taking anything away from Ms. Mowat. Despite my two points above, the Gophers still got 37 pucks on the net. The Beavers don't get a win without her effort.

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

Obviously the Gophers were not at their best today; both their intensity level and execution were not what they need to be at this stage of the season. But I would take issue with the comment above that "the Beavers played a high-pressure, full-on, deep forecheck & made so few mistakes that they controlled the play for the entire game". Although the Gophers didn't generate nearly as many quality scoring chances as they normally do, they certainly out-chanced the Beavers, including a half-dozen or so goal mouth scrambles when they couldn't poke it in. But as we've seen all too often this season, far too many of their shot attempts were either off target, from long distance or right in the goalie's mid-section. Bemidji and their goaltender Mowat deserve a lot of credit for that, but still at key times the Gophers did have prime opportunities to bury the puck, but couldn't do it.

I would also take issue with the goaltending comment. Leveille stopped 17 of Bemidji's 18 shots, a SV% of .944. BSU's one goal was pretty fluky, and I wouldn't put the blame on her for that one. More than anything, the lack of offense was the problem today as the team should be able to score more than one goal against any team in the country. When you only give up one goal you should win the hockey game.

Yeah, I thought BSU looked rather slow for most of the game and at times embarrassingly slow to the point of lazy. In the first period there were several times when a BSU player had the puck with 10-15 ft of empty space around them in the neutral zone but instead of turning on the jets they just lethargically started skating forward with the puck as if there was no ultimate intent. Looked like their skates were anchored in concrete. And it occurred several times regardless of whether or not the puck carrier had support. And lots of pathetically weak shots.

BSU is a defensive team that has suffered this season from the same scourge as has UMD, OSU and UND...woefully inadequate offense. You may squeak some games out that way but it's not a winning formula for achieving higher levels of success. UM caught that virus today.

To quote Leonard Nimoy as Spock, "fascinating."

I won't speak on behalf of those sitting around me at the game, but my opinion is that you could have said the exact same thing, word-for-word, about the Gophers. Just replace "BSU" with "Minnesota".

In person, I didn't see that. There were times when Bemidji State players were caught on the ice for too long and needed a change, and players in that situation will look slow, I'll admit. Overall, the Beavers that you'd expect to be flying around the ice did so.

I didn't feel that the Gophers were bad by any means. Were they cranked up to the level that one would want to see at this stage of the year? No. They played a good, solid game, but did not possess enough urgency throughout to ensure that they would put away a good team with its season at stake. As the game went along, it became clear that a bounce would go a long way toward deciding it. There were numerous times both ways where pucks hit traffic and skittered just wide of a post. The odds favor the team with more zone time -- usually. However, relying on getting a bounce isn't the "Get It Done" or "Leave No Doubt" mottos we've seen from previous championship teams.

Certain people played with a lot of intensity yesterday. Pannek was great, but I didn't feel either of her wings were at their best. Brandt was flying, but she tried to force passes to the slot that may have been there a fraction earlier, but BSU recovers too quickly for the window to remain open for long. As a team, Minnesota wasn't as efficient as it needed to be yesterday.

As for goaltending, I saw Noora lose when her team got shut out as well, including a trip to Harvard where she allowed one goal in 125 minutes and got one point for her efforts. It's hard for a goalie to score or read a shot that is never taken.

The good news is that after losing yesterday, I'm okay with any quarterfinal opponent. Bemidji State? I wouldn't mind another shot at the Beavers. The Gophers have yet to beat them away from the Sanford Center, ironically enough, so I'd welcome the chance. RIT? Always good to see a team I've never watched before. Clarkson? The attraction there is obvious. BU wouldn't be my first choice, but Minnesota dropped the ball enough times over the year that the risk is you play a more dangerous first opponent than you'd like. That's not to say that the others aren't dangerous, but they have attributes that make them a more favorable opponent than someone like the Terriers where the revenge motive flows only in one direction.

If anybody wants to see a replay of yesterday's goal, you can see it on the game summary video on the BadgerWomensHockey twitter feed.

It's 1:48 into the tweet titled "Miss the #Badgers win in Grand Forks? Not a problem, we have you covered" It's amazing how hard the puck was slingshotted into the net with her leg!

Yeah, just think if she had used a "kicking motion".

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

Jerry Kill came over and talked to the Gopher Women's Hockey team this morning before they left for Grand Forks!

shouldn't it have been the other way around?

Well, coaching UND football would be a step up for him in terms of success.

I hope his post season "mojo" does not rub off.

Well, the Captain of the Titanic isn't available, and Mike McCarthy won't set foot in rodentsota unless he has to, so Coach Kill was the 3rd best option, makes sense, right?

You guys were right.

The guys on the Fast Hockey (okay, Midco) broadcast insisted that it couldn't possibly have been kicked in because there was no way it could have been that hard if it had been directed by anything but her stick.

Photos from my trip to Grand Forks this weekend. I had a great time, except for that display with the Lamoureaux jerseys. What the hell was I thinking?

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

Anyone know how much tickets for March 22nd will be?

Tickets are sold-out. People can sign up on a waiting list. I don't believe they ever offered tickets for just the final game.

Only all-session tickets (covering the 2 semifinal games and the championship game) are being offered, and the price for an adult all-session ticket is $35 (chairback) or $25 (bench). Student/youth/senior all-session tickets are $20. If you have any questions, please contact the Gopher Fan Relations Department at 612-624-8080.

I would imagine that the teams making the final four will get an allotment of tickets to sell to their fan base.
