Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

How can you summarize the state of the WCHA and not mention The Dynasty???

That is a very good question, of which I have no good answer for, other than it's a snafu on my part.

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

Is it good news or bad news for UMD that the Gophers have a loss and a tie in the last two series?

The loss had to be bad news for the 'Dogs, because those three points then went to UND. I think after the tie in Duluth that UMD felt it could play with the Gophers not matter what they've done lately.

Has there been any official word or any info at all regarding Paige Haley's status?

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

To be honest, I didn't think that the Gophers played that well tonight. In particular, they were really sloppy in the defensive zone. The UMD goal came on a complete breakdown by both McMillen and Leveille and the gruesome breakdowns continued.

Fortunately, Minnesota has a quality bullpen and can call on a relief goalie of the quality of Shyler Sletta, who came in and imposed her will on the game, rhe only one of the four goalies involved who did so.

Eeyore, I assume you're being sarcastic? After all, the Gophers did win 7-1 against the nations's 6th ranked team. Leveille faced 23 UMD shots and stopped 22 of them - that's a save % of .957, which is very good in any game, in any league. Sletta came in and played 8 1/2 minutes in the 3rd, and was a perfect 7/7, but by then the game was over.

No, the Gophers weren't perfect, but all in all it was a very nice win, and I'd take the exact same result tomorrow in a heartbeat.

Isn't that sky done falling yet? I thought it was a great move by Huertas. She got to the far post in a hurry. All you can do at that point is respond; and they did within a minute.

Not really, no. I thought Kayla Black was terrible tonight and UMD was even worse in their own zone than the Gophers were. 7-1 was really not an accurate reflection of the game that was played.

Don't let the score fool you on the actual game. This was far from the first time over the last few years when I've thought that the Gophers beat a team 7-1, or 9-2, or something similar, without playing as well as they have in games that they win 3-0. While Leveille may have stopped all but one shot, there were a number of other plays that left me shaking my head. What the hell was that pop fly she sent up that got intercepted by UMD at the blue line? It wasn't just her; I thought the whole team was sloppy in the defensive zone. And while the game was over by the time Sletta came in (though she played more like 17 minutes rather than 8 1/2; you're getting confused by the very brief time she spent at the bench on a delayed penalty), it's also the case that the team settled down and played more tightly once she was in.

At the start of the third period, I said that I didn't care whether they scored any more, what I wanted was one of those third periods where they give up a total of two shots while protecting a lead. That's not what I got. UMD had those two shots in less than a minute and a half.

Sure. They got the puck into the offensive zone, where they did look good all night. The response was good. Some of the chances they kept giving up weren't.

I get what you were saying originally. I thought there were several instances of sloppy puck play by the Gophers (particularly the D) but, to some degree, I attributed that to a very aggressive forecheck by a pretty good team. I was a bit worried when Huretas scored (and it was a nice move) so soon after we did but that fortunately that didn't hurt us (gawd I have been waiting to use that joke). It didn't feel like The Gophers dominated in part because of the miscues getting out of their zone and in part because the puck appeared to WANTED to be in the UMD net last night. Some nights you do everything perfectly & don't get rewarded other nights long distance slappers find a shin guard & magically find a way in. There were some beautiful pays by UM lat night that did not register on the scoreboard, had they not gotten a couple of those others it would have appeared like a different game on the score sheet. But that OK because we have had the opposite thing happen recently too so it all works out.

I agree with ne7minder; you have to also consider what the opponent is or isn't doing. You are correct that UMD was less than stellar in its own end. Conversely, there were times that the Bulldogs were throwing the kitchen sink at the Gophers with the forecheck. I will promise you that if a team that is as good as UMD commits three players hard on the forecheck, they will cause some turnovers against any opponent. I was okay with the majority of UM's turnovers last night, because most resulted from a lot of pressure, and the Gophers broke out successfully most of the time. Sure, there were some exceptions, like Stecklein falling on the first shift or McMillen whiffing on a pass. Those will happen, and a key is where they occur and how the team responds when they do. The game was very quick tempo early on. The "go" switch was on a high setting, and when you play that fast, there are going to be more bobbles. It's like a juggler adding more balls; he has to move quicker, and the chances of a miscue go up. I think last night's game was very good for the Gophers, because it is good preparation for the high speed of the postseason. If teams want to up the pressure, it leaves them vulnerable to transition plays. Minnesota didn't score in transition last night, but there were a lot of near misses, and if the game gets opened up, that is favorable against most opponents.

If you are expecting to see a perfect game, then you are watching the wrong sport. With usually six people on the ice for 60 minutes having to make hundreds of actions and reactions, they are going to do things that you and I sitting on our posteriors will think could have been done better. It's true; they could be better. But we get spoiled because we get to watch excellent so much of the time, that when we see something less, it stands out. It's tougher yet to play a crisp third period when everybody in building, you included, knows that the game is over. It would be nice to see what they did in the third on Saturday in Grand Forks, but the first period was far better last night. You have to take the bad with the good, or you will always be unhappy.

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

Announced attendance last night of 2588 is 2nd best of the year after 2nd Wisconsin game of 2728.

Attendance has been pretty decent this year with the exception of St Lawrence and first Bemidji games, which had scheduling challenges like Halloween and Sunday/Tuesday in early January. Apparently halloween has captured pretty good market share amongst the kids. I wonder how Valentine's Day will be?

Average at Ridder is 1905 even with those 3 games.

Way too low for a team as good as this - SIGH
Too many gray hairs & kids, not enough just fans of hockey. Nothing wrong with the crowd that does show up but it should contain an average of 1000 who are not at/near retirement or taking their little skaters out to watch the big girls play. Still makes me sad when we go on the road & see how many teams do even worse.

Biggest attendance of the year, 2730, beats the Wisconsin game by 2, and the brings the average for the regular season at Ridder over 2000.

Not disagreeing at all with your description of the usual crowd, but tonight I saw more than usual of those 'not at/near retirement or taking their little skaters out to watch the big girls play'. I wonder if the 2 for 1 Valentine's special helped. Anyways good weekend at the box office and on the ice!

Maybe more people are noticing that this hockey is really good hockey. It was one heII of a game & the place was rocking which is not just nice and fun plus both teams deserved a raucous bunch to appreciate a ton of effort.

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

A rather arrogant comment by Leveille I thought.

She hasn't yet learned that you can continue to do something until you can't and someone else can continue to try to accomplish something until they can. And those turning points often intrude upon our delusions at the most inconvenient of times.

For some reason I'm reminded of the BC vs UM NCAA tournament upset game of 4 years ago where BC's Kelly Stack and her pals resoundingly sent favoured UM packing to dust off their golf clubs and contemplate the next season.

Aw, don't be bitter. She just said that UM can shut really good teams like UMD down when they play at their peak. It ain't bragging if you can do it.
