Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

How come there was no video from Ridder this weekend?

Video was on BigTenNetwork Plus instead of College Sports Live. It looks to me like the UND series is the same. I'm trying to find out what I can about this. Don't love having to buy two subscriptions to get the home games. Like to hear what anybody else know about this!

Anyone else notice that Stecklein and McMillen played the entire 1:35 of the second 3-on-5 penalty kill despite numerous opportunities to change?
Ramsey was one of the players in the box, as was Brandt. If need be, the staff would probably trust a couple of forwards like Brandt and Cameranesi to kill a 5-on-3 with one D, but it would have to be one of their top three D. At this point, it seems that Garzone is emerging as the 4th D. She appeared more poised with the puck than she was last year when making the transition.

Per my initial puzzlement over video service providers yesterday and related inquiries...College Sports Live no longer provides the service for BIG schools. This makes any account Gopher fans had with College Sports Live and accessed through All-Access obsolete. For viewing Minnesota athletics video anyway. I had to create a new account with BTN Plus. As I understand from communications with the service providers web based video for GWH will be provided by BTN Plus. I hope I have that right since I now have the monthly subscription with BTN Plus.

I suspect the video link provided on the Gophersports GWH page will now take you to the BTN Plus site.

Should add that BTN Plus subscription options and associated fees are identical to what they were with College Sports Live.

I didn't really see this, but I certainly hope you are right. I'm really cheering for her.

Wow that's pretty obnoxious...

Absolutely. It's fascinating to me (and painful) the indignities one must endure to be a consumer of women's hockey! Along with the perks, like a great game, great personalities, and good ticket prices.

ARM: From your write-up of the Minnesota/BU game, the phrase is "batten down the hatches."
I'm aware of that. But if I'm quoting somebody who says, "Goldy is great!" then I'll write that even if you tell me otherwise. Durocher likely knows it is "batten" as well, but I can't assume it is what he meant to say instead of what he did say.

Ah. Got it. One of my favorite prog bands is German and the singer's pronunciations are, uhm, interesting. The lyrics are written with what he was trying to sing rather than what he did sing. I haven't figured out why English is the default language for all prog bands regardless of nationality. Some do it better than others.

What did Poulin actually do to earn that delay of game penalty?

They've changed the rule off face-offs so that the center can't use her hand to play the puck to a teammate; she has to use her stick or skate. Apparently, this now matches the international rule. Durocher said he may have forgotten to tell her of the rule change, because she was one of several Terriers at Hockey Canada camp when practices began.

Yeah, she looks nice, but I thought she looked good with darker hair too.

Oh, maybe you girls are talking about how she plays hockey?

Playing defense is not a glamorous job, that’s why I developed the Pokechecker efficiency ratio. For the past 2 years she has been among the team leaders in having the highest ratio of goals scored to given up on the team. In fact as a freshman not a single even strength goal was scored while she was on the ice. Now I know you girls don’t put much into statistics, math probably isn’t your strong point, so you go by how a player looks on the ice. It’s too bad a player has to look good on the ice for you to be impressed; you’d think getting the job done would be good enough. The fact that she has played on the PK the previous 2 years should have been your clue but it’s nice that 3 years into it you are no longer clueless.

I’m not sure how ARM came to the conclusion that Cline needs to become Katey Frischman and that Haley doesn’t make for a good forward. If he had been paying attention Friday he’d have seen Haley is good with the puck in a crowd, and last year demonstrated impressive speed with the puck at open ice a few times and is an adept passer. Given she’d be the tallest forward there is a lot of upside for her playing forward, I thought she played well at forward on the 4th line last year, but there isn’t the need for her at forward, it’s not that it isn’t a good fit for her. I thought she played well this past weekend and if given the ice time she’ll be an asset at the blueline this year.

I have no idea why you’d want Cline to play forward, although she certainly can in a pinch, but there are other options as well, and besides there are plenty of forwards. It looks to me like she’ll be the 6th, if not the 5th, D this year, She played well yesterday against a very good opponent. Like Haley it would be better to be given a defensive role and stick with it to maximize their development. Offense sells tickets, defense wins championships. That has been proven the last 3 years.

I don’t know who picks the stars of the game, but it’s just like the WCHA players of the week, they ignore the defensive aspect of the game except for goalies. It’s not that Lorence, Ramsey, or Piazza didn’t deserve it but the job Stecklein & NcMillen did defensively was fantastic, not to mention they both played well offensively too. In the end, who really cares. It’s just a good excuse for the fans to cheer and the players to receive some recognition. It sure would be nice if they recognized players for their defensive play though.

Just a moment that I want to remember:

BU on their second 5 on 3, they sent out their big guns and kept them out for almost all of the two player advantage. Gophers win a face off, puck goes into the left corner with Stecklein in possession. And then she just keeps it there in the corner. Holding possession of the puck without freezing it, keeping it moving for about 15 seconds against Poulin, Lefort and Sutherland. Nearly everyone in the building realized how important that was but Poulin, Lefort and Sutherland, and Durocher know more than most that her talent and determination in keeping possession and killing that time off the clock was a huge moment for the Gophers.

Note to Brooky: It would be now 4 season ago when I saw her do the same thing against Stillwater late in the conference championship deciding game at Roseville Arena. 5 on 3, Brodt wins the draw, Stecklein takes it behind the net and keeps it there against the Ponies three best forwards.

My personal weekend MVP: Lee Stecklein.

Thanks! I was there and remember that vividly. As is the memory of utter frustration I felt as I watched. Stecklein played a fantastic game that night. Particularly throughout the 3rd period when the Ponies were definitely pressing and giving it everything they had. You couldn't help being impressed. Frustrated...but impressed.

At one point, the puck was free for an instant, and then she managed to get it clogged up along the rail again. She makes the correct hockey play a very high percentage of the time.

interested to see how Frost goes with his goaltending this weekend . If Peters and Leveille each get a game and if they split series the rest of the season.

I don't think there's any question that Leveille, as the returning starter from last season when she easily exceeded expectations while very ably stepping in to replace Noora Raty, is Frost's clear No. 1. But I wouldn't be at all surprised if Frost gives Peters, who has great credentials herself and who sat out all last year as a redshirt freshman, another start this weekend. Although Peters wasn't called upon to make too many difficult saves on Friday against Penn State, she did stop all 15 shots she faced, and looked poised in doing so in posting a shutout in her first-ever collegiate start.

Assuming Frost again decides to split goaltending duties against UMD, a question to ask is what impact each goaltender's performance might have on Frost's decision(s) for the following weekend against Wisconsin? Hard to say how Frost is looking at this, because we don't know how he's evaluated their work during practice or what commitment(s), if any, he's made to each of them in terms of playing time.

I'm going to guess (or hope!) that each gets a start against UMD, that each does very well, and that Frost decides to again give each a start against Wisconsin. And of course again, each does very well in doing their part in shutting down the Badgers, and the pattern repeats, keeping them both fresh and sharp through the NCAA's...
