2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

Fangraphs article made an interesting point, they basically talked about how underrated Lucroy is at pitch framing and how it most certainly helped Yo, who doesn't have the greatest command and has had a declining K rate for a while now. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/rangers-to-try-yovani-gallardo-out-of-context/

As far as the haul, it's probably about right. Consider what the Brewers got for Greinke, or what the A's got for Donaldson, or what Arizona got for Upton etc.

The scary part is Knebel's shoulder. Otherwise, I like the haul if Diplan can end up being an ace, even if its 5 years down the road. I'm happy with the haul for Gallardo who is on the decline. I'm not sure this actually means they'll go after Zimmerman or Shields but it could be nice if they did.

With guys coming off an injury, sometimes you can get a higher upside guy than you would've originally. Hopefully the pitching coach can work out some of his command issues and the training staff can teach him the correct exercises to prevent it from re-occurring (I think it was Nolan Ryan who constantly did rotator cuff exercises and what not as a preventative measure).

Sardinas might allow the Brewers to platoon split at 2nd. At the very least he should be a decent utility guy.

And yeah the other guy is a project but he could be really good some day.

Not to mention the amount of salary space this freed up. I don't think acquiring Shields or Zimmerman is gonna make this team a contender but I like either of them more than Yo at this point.

Pitcher Dontrelle Willis, who hasn't appeared in a major league game since 2011, has reached agreement with the Milwaukee Brewers...
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

...on a minor league contract.
Whew. Okay then.

The deal includes an invitation to Milwaukee's big-league camp.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Some interesting thoughts on the decline of Gallardo's strikeout rate and what might be causing it. It's interesting to think about, if he was intentionally transitioning to an approach where he tried to generate more GB's instead of K's (seems likely based on the article), you'd have to wonder why. The Brewers infield D wasn't particularly great outside of Segura.

SMH. This team has serious deficiencies and they're gonna spend 13M on a closer?

Oh Doug...

You'd have to assume for this to happen Philly is gonna have to eat some of that contract. They're already set to pay Broxton $9 mil this year.

Well maybe we can just pitch the bullpen for 5 innings every game like the Royals. Even then the bullpen isn't nearly as good as theirs and costs way more

Even with Yo it wasn't great, I don't really see it being good enough to contend unless they get Shields and Zimmerman, which sure as heck ain't happening if they blow their money foolishly on a closer.

Milwaukee appears likely — at this point, at least — to be in the mind of using Jonathan Broxton as the team’s closer in 2015, that large right-hander having been acquired by the club from Cincinnati at the end of August. Broxton is projected to record a 96 FIP- next year, which would represent the worst figure of his career among seasons in which he pitched 50-plus inning. That’s not surprising: Broxton recorded the lowest average fastball velocity (93.2 mph) of his career in 2014, and he’s a player for whom there’s been a strong correlation between arm speed and effectiveness, as the hastily made graph below indicates — which graph features Broxton’s average fastball velocity in seasons during which he’s pitched 50-plus innings and then the FIP- figures he’s recorded in those same seasons.

9 million...

No he didn't lol. He was so bad in those last months that he accumulated negative WAR on the season. Despite being lights out for a while.

edit: For some reason I thought he was more expensive than he was but I wouldn't want to pay much for a guy who's as volatile as he is

no news is good news, when Papelbon is concerned. Melvin says he has not heard from the Phillies again.

other notes that I can't link to because of work filters...

Boras and the Brewers have been in contact about K-Rod.

Mark A. says don't get excited about Shields or Zimmermann - they're not planning on signing a big name starter, but they're definitely looking at closers (obviously).

Ryan Braun is well into his hitting routine and his thumb is still 100%.
