Yea, but with one match (maybe 2 if you have a 3rd place match) out there once it's over, the day is over on the golf course and everyone goes home.

In stroke play, everyone plays 18 and you have somebody hitting a ball until 6 PM (ET).

This is true, but if you have a 36 hole match play final, you probably have more air-time (9ish hours?) than a stroke play event. Even if it finishes 10&8 (highly unlikely), that is still probably 6-7 hours of air-time.

That is true. On the other hand, you have a lot of breaks in the action, as they have to walk around 200 yards after most tee shots and another 100 yards again after 12 second shots. No cuts from action at one hole to action at another hole a few seconds later.

My point is that ratings will be great regardless of the tournament type if you have two big names in the Final/In the Hunt. If you don't, the ratings will suck. It doesn't matter if there are breaks in the action. A 36 hole playoff basically ensures that the network broadcasting will have enough golf (perhaps more than enough golf) to have a nice amount of coverage. If you are worried about breaks in the action, simply have a 3rd Place match (if necessary 5th, 7th...etc) as well.

That's nice. I'm pretty sure Greg Norman would trade those 8 second place finishes for one more major. I'm sure Phil would trade all 6 runner ups at the US Open for 1 victory there. Winning is all that matters. Nobody is going to argue with you that Jack Nicklaus wasn't one of the best players of all time. His 18 major victories speaks to that. If he had finished second in those 18 majors, he wouldn't be considered one of the greats, but rather the biggest loser in the history of the sport.

I'm pretty sure Greg Norman would trade those 8 second place finishes for one more major. I'm sure Phil would trade all 6 runner ups at the US Open for 1 victory there.

No debate there, people only rank winners of Majors, top 5 finishes are asterisks.

Winning is all that matters.

I thought making the cut was what really mattered where it counts the most: prize money.



For me it was an exercise in curiosity, nothing more. No point to make.


Though if I were to make a point, it would be how Nicklaus' career overlapped Palmer and Player, and was concurrent with Watson. To me that makes his total even more amazing, that he was in direct competition at one time or another with three others from the top ten list.


I still remember his Masters victory when he was 46. that gave me the chills how amazing it was.

There is always hope for us when one of the world's best hits a shot just like I do (have).

Miguel Angel Jimenez, the World's Most Interesting Golfer, duffed one from the deep rough into the deep rough on his way to a double bogey on one hole. Based on personal experience, I would have taken an iron and got it into the short grass and tried again. But then again, I don't smoke Cubans or drink wine on the practice tee.

3-4 foot sliders on a fast green are the scariest putts of all. You're expected to make them, but if you go too soft the break kills you. You go too hard and miss and you're 8 ft. coming back. Give me a 25 footer I can feel great about if I make and OK about if I 2-putt. We shall not speak of 3-putts.

Gotcha. As it stands today, there is really not much of a debate that Jack is the best golfer to ever play. If Tiger can get to 18, it will be a very interesting conversation. Tiger has probably a good 15-20 years left to compete for major titles, but I think he has to get two or three in the next 5-6 years if he's going to have a chance.

That was truly impressive. Of course, we'll see what the Top Ten looks like in 30-40 years when the players from this era are finished making noise. Tiger could easily have played with a few of the greats himself. Personally, I feel like the overall game of golf is deeper today than it was back then. Today, there are probably 20+ guys that could easily win a major. I think this is why we have seen so many different guys win a major lately. Back in Jack's era, the depth wasn't there. In any given major, probably only about 5-8 guys really had a chance. That's probably a big reason why so many from that era are in the top 10...lack of depth.

I couldn't agree more. That is still probably one of the top 10 major victories of the last 50 years. Of course, maybe Tiger will trump it with a Masters victory at 56

Dufner fires a course record 63 at Oak Hill. With the AM rain, it was pretty much target practice for the afternoon groups, fly it to the pin and watch it stick. Incredibly fun watching earlier this afternoon, guys were nailing 15+ footers regularly it seemed, with a few chip ins for good measure.

Joe, I can tell you I got Mrs. P the women's version and she has improved her tee shots immensely. Well, most of the time.
For $150 I'd say go for it.

For $150 I'd say go for it.

I only have a little over a week left before class starts back up again, so I decided to head out to the course for an early tee time. Played very well, and tied my best score at the course (Plum Creek in Castle Rock, CO) with a 78 (38-40...played the back nine first). I needed a par on my last hole to shoot a 77. My drive had been drawing to the point of a near hook all day, but I drilled this one dead center in the fairway about 50 yards from the green (hole is only 320 yards). Get out my 58 degree, and hit about a 3/4 shot...it drifts to the right, which is okay because the ball will roll back toward where the pin was today...keeps drifting right...oh no...more right. It hits the middle of the fringe and could bounce either left (towards the hole) or right (towards a deep bunker). I get the kick to the right, but miss the bunker. I was about 8 feet below the putting surface (although probably only about 5 feet from the green), so I go with the flop shot. I chunk it, but it goes just far enough to get up on the green. I walk up expecting to see my ball about 4-5 feet from the hole...and I'm right at the top of the ridge, about 25 feet for par. Needless to say I two-putt for a 78. I was happy with the score, but I could have shot a 76 had that bounce been to the left as opposed to right. Of course, I could have shot an 80 if my flop came up short and right back to me and then perhaps a three putt.

Golf is a funny game.

I have one and play well with it. I use a draw setting and it seems to help.

Does it have adjustable loft?

I'm thinking of starting out with a 9.5 Draw and see what happens.
