2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Now he gets to putter around the house for a few weeks talking care of the wife and bonding with his new daughter.

If he doesn't, it could drive a wedge between them.

You're right, he will avoid a gap developing between them. Now he can pitch in around the house and help out by being the driver...maybe take the caddy out and get momma some chips. Much better than putting his head in the sand and needing a rescue.

He'll also live to play another round.

One of my friends quipped that the baby has already set Mahan back a couple hundred thousand dollars.

I've got a few kids and was at each birth but if the choice was making a million dollars and getting there a few hours late...I'd just be late. Its his call, not criticizing.

But if you already have millions in the bank and will have millions more? Easy joice for Mahan. BTW these puns are killing me.

And college awaits. Annual cost won't be a mere 60k by that time either, though I'm sure he will be able to pour enough into their college accounts over the next 18 years to afford 250k+ per kid and still have meat with his beans.

I have more of a bunker mentality, so I'd shoot for the prize money now and not fall into the trap of assuming my income will always be in this range...that way I'm ready should I suffer a handicap, or worse, sudden death.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Interesting thoughts about returning to match play at the PGA Championship.

From its inaugural event in 1916 until 1957, the PGA Championship was a match play event.

And that is the answer to getting the PGA Championship back in the game with golf's other three majors.

Match play--once a staple of the golf, now it's an afterthought. Players have become so comfortable with the weekly schedule of tour events that competing head-to-head gives them the heebie-jeebies.

Imagine the pressure of the 36-hole qualifier and the drama of a lose-andyou're- out format. Now that would bring major drama to the year's final major.

Personally, I like how the PGA is currently. That being said, it is an interesting idea, and I would be okay with the change. However, I would want a few more match play events during the season then for players to prepare for the PGA, and maybe even push the tourney back a few weeks.
I like match play, but TV rules all and I think a 10 & 8 final may be a downer on ratings.

No different than a player winning by 5-6 strokes. The biggest difference with ratings is that there are usually a half dozen or so players in contention going into Sunday, and usually 1 or 2 (if not more) are big names. In match play, you could have two lesser names playing for the championship, which would be a killer to ratings.

I found some fascinating information at this link: http://www.intotherough.co.uk/golf-...ost-runner-up-finishes-at-major-championships

I was curious as to who had the most second-place finishes at the majors, perhaps to compile a combined list of most wins + second place.

While the article doesn't combine them, it does break out both:

Golfers with most second places in majors
1. Jack Nicklaus - 19
2. Greg Norman, Tom Watson - 8
4. Sam Snead - 7
T5. Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Ben Hogan, Phil Mickelson, Byron Nelson, Gary Player, Harry Vardon - 6
T12. Ben Crenshaw, Raymond Floyd, Byron Nelson, Arnold Palmer - 5
16. Billy Casper - 4
T17. Seve Ballesteros, David Duval, Sergio Garcia, Walter Hagen, Bobby Jones, Tom Kite, Gene Sarazen - 3

Golfers with most major wins
1. Jack Nicklaus - 18
2. Tiger Woods - 14
3. Walter Hagen - 11
T4. Ben Hogan, Gary Player - 9
6. Tom Watson - 8
T7. Bobby Jones, Arnold Palmer, Gene Sarazen, Sam Snead, Harry Vardon -7
T12. Nick Faldo, Lee Trevino - 6
T14. Seve Ballesteros, James Braid, Byron Nelson, J.H. Taylor, Peter Thomson - 5
T19. Willie Anderson Jr., Jim Barnes, Raymond Floyd, Bobby Locke, Tom Morris Jr., Tom Morris Sr., Willie Park Sr. - 4

37 (!!) combined first and second place for Jack. Even if Tiger does get to 19 major wins, it's probably safe to say that he'll never get to 37 combined from his current 20.

Though I wonder how Byron Nelson shows up under both 6 second place finishes and 5 second place finishes...

or how they missed Mickelson with 5 majors, though maybe it was published before his British Open victory? EDIT: yes it is from Sept 30 2009 so add (at least) another second to Phil's total for this year's US Open 2nd place, and perhaps another second for anything he did in 2010 - 2012.

Yea, but with one match (maybe 2 if you have a 3rd place match) out there once it's over, the day is over on the golf course and everyone goes home.

In stroke play, everyone plays 18 and you have somebody hitting a ball until 6 PM (ET).

My guess is that if you asked Jack Nicklaus if he would trade his 19 2nd place finishes for another major, he just might take it. 2nd is nice for the money, but you play to win. Plus, you simply can't compare the two until Tiger is done. Of course, given technological advances, Tiger can probably compete for major titles well into his 50s...something Jack never really had the opportunity to do.
