2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

I should have kept my mouth shut. My game is so messed up right now that I am ready to put the clubs in the attic - or the lake.

I have lost any semblance of confidence in all aspects of my "game" to the point that it's not fun being out there with my golf league or my wife.

Two years ago my scores and my handicap were heading down -- today I'm embarrassed to post my scores.

I quit playing when I was in my 20s because of my frustration with the game. I don't want to repeat that again.

Speaking of my golf league, we took a road trip today to a semi-private course near Altoona. The gold (middle) tees were about 1000 yards shorter than the white tees, and all but two were in the same spot as the red (forward) tees. Why bother even having gold tees?
Steve

Come on down here and we'll play a round and we'll both be so bad one of us will look good!

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

I got driver envy at an outing I went to last week. Did one of those photos at the tee where we all put our drivers together and I was made fun of. I've got an old set of hand me down clubs (they were my aunts).

I'm debating getting new clubs. I think any newer clubs may improve my game, but I'm still enough of a beginner I wonder if I should wait and improve my game and then get the right clubs.

Maybe I should just keep my old dented clubs, and then I can use them as an excuse for my lousy game.

Some of the newer clubs are designed to be a little more forgiving on a miss hit. It may be worth investing in a new set which can be done without breaking the bank. A few years ago I upgraded my driver (birthday present from dad) for maybe $150 or so. Then after graduating school he got me a new set of irons (again maybe only $250-300). That isnt really too bad when you consider that some drivers cost $300+ themselves. Once I had the new equipment that I felt comfortable with I was able to focus on improving my game. Now that I have improved quite a bit I hope to upgrade myself once I get a real, good paying job.

You can also get a perfectly good driver on ebay for 40 -50 bucks, like a Cobra S9-1. Not the latest generation, but it won't hold you back one bit.

Also an option. But, for me at least, I wont buy a club without trying it first. So if I went that route I'd try a club at a retail establishment and then see if I can find it online cheaper. But again that is me. I tried several drivers and iron sets before I found one that felt right for me.

I think you are right, but those prior generation clubs are usually available at places like Golf Galaxy and Nevada Bobs and can be tested. When I started to golf quite a bit, I also swung some of my buddies' drivers at the range.

I would suggest getting a good set of game-improvement irons. I'm biased toward Adams because that's what I've been playing for several years (can't blame the clubs for my lousy game).

Google/Bing 'game improvement irons reviews' to get an idea of what might be good for you.

There are a number of places online to get new or used irons at very low prices. Rockbottomgolf.com and dallasgolf.com are two that I have used and would recommend. Also, search eBay for 'game improvement irons' and you should find tons of good deals.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Take a look @ Adams. I bought a set of A 05's last year for $299. They have a 3-5 hybrid, 6-7 hybrid irons and 8-PW regular irons. They are perfect for my handicap (high). They may still be in somebody's inventory somewhere.

I also bought a Taylor burner driver for $150.

Remember, if you hit a bad shot, it's usually operator error, not the club.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Spend your first $300 on lessons. Then you will use whatever clubs you get more successfully, probably saving you $$ in the long run. With the right swing, you could have success with persimmons.

And you only spent $1,000 on raffle tickets! :p:D

So CBS is showing the AT&T National right now...well after the final groups finished. Tape delay is stupid.

Played in a 2 man scramble this weekend whatever driver and putter showed up in my bag because my drives where long and straight and I was hitting 20 ft birdie putts

That's always fun when the putter is going. Last week, I played my best round ever (37-38-75), and had a chance on 18 to shoot 72 with a birdie. Hit a beautiful drive, then a decent approach to about 25 feet. I don't know if it was nerves or excitement, but I blew the putt 25 feet past the hole, then left the next putt short by about 8 feet, and lipped that out to four putt and double the last to shoot 75. I was still happy with my round, as I played very well. Even with the 4 putt, I only putted 29 times, which is 1 away from my best ever putting performance.

The Open at Muirfield begins in 8 hours, I believe (Is eastern 5 hours behind? Not 100% sure what time zone Muirfield is in). Sounds like it will be playing fast, firm and furious. Who do y'all like?
