2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

I'm amazed when I see older guys (like me) who step up to the first tee without warming up or spending a little time on the range. Too many moving parts for us old guys to tweak.

Mookie figures one only has so many good shots in them, so why waste one on the range :p

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

y'all see the girls are playing a 12 hole course at atlantis? seems they picked up some rain and holes that don't drain are submerged! :D

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

First chip in of the year today:) missed the green about four yards short, knocked it in for a bird. Ended my round bird, bird for a 40-36-76.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Rory hit a 100 yard duck hook off the tee this AM. 5 Euro Ryder Cuppers missed cut. He needs his head rescrewed on. Tiger got inside and Rory is thinking about everything except hitting the little white ball straight.

Felt bad for Jeff Overton today, who got DQd for using a putting aid during a delay in play when he was practicing his putting...

http://espn.go.com/golf/story/_/id/9311036/jeff-overton-dqd-colonial-using-putting-aid

I don't feel good or bad for him regarding the DQ. And I have no idea if the rule is a good one. But, he clearly personifies the "it's somebody else's responsibility " mindset.

So it is the official's fault he didn't know the rules, and the rule book is too big and they shouldn't even have offered me a chance to practice??????

Sorry Jeff, if you want to participate in a.sport where you could win millions of dollars, read the freakin rule book...or ask somebody. If you we're completely clueless, just accept the penalty and call it a learning experience.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

So I finally bit the bullet and decided to upgrade my irons. I previously had a set of Callaway Diablo Edge R Irons (4-PW, AW), and they worked well for me. However, I got a deal on a new set of TaylorMade RBZ Max Graphite Irons (4-PW, AW) that I just couldn't pass up (~$500 after discounts). I haven't played yet (hoping to play either tomorrow or Monday), but it got me thinking what everyone here carries in their bag? Considering that I asked the question, I figured I would start off...

Driver - Callaway Diablo Octane (10.5*)
3 Wood - TaylorMade V Steel (15*)
2 Hybrid - Idea Super XTD Hybrid (17*)
4 Hybrid - Adams Super LS Hybrid (22*)
Irons - TaylorMade RocketBallz Max Graphite (4-PW, AW)
Sand Wedge - Topflite (60*) - I've had this club for over 10 years now (part of my original set), and it is still the only club I trust to get me out of the sand.
Putter - TaylorMade Ghost Corza

Anyway, those are my 14 clubs that I keep in the bag. I've been debating about upgrading my driver, but have recently been hitting the club very well. Hopefully my new irons work out for the best. Anyway, the thread was getting a little bogged down, so I thought this might liven it up a bit.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Driver: Taylormade R11 9*, adjusted up to a 10*
Irons: Callaway RAZR X 4-AW
Wedges: Taylormade Z-spin 56* and 60*
Putter: Ping craz-e-too Scottsdale putter

I've always had issues picking ball up out of the fairway with a fairway metal, hence not carrying any. I used to have an Adams tight lies five wood but snapped the shaft at the head, never replaced it, but that was the only metal that worked for me, had a flat sole and a nice sharp angle to the club face.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Driver -Adams Speed line.
3 wood- Adams Speed line
3, 4, 5 and 6 hybred- all Adams A 70
7, 8, 9, PW, SW- Adams A 12 OS
Wilson staff putter.

all graphite -stiff.

I wish I had a regular 6 iron instead of the 6 hybred, and I wish I had a gap wedge.

I looked at a new set of Adams forged clubs including new Hybreds, but when I tried them out, they give too much spin for me. I need, at least at present, forgiving clubs.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Driver (10.50) and 3 wood: Cobra S9-1, stiff flex
3 Hybrid: Ping G5
4-9, PW, AW, SW: Callaway X18, uni-steel
60* Callaway forged
Putter: Odyssey White Ice

I have an old persimmon driver (and fairways) in the garage that I'm going to throw in my bag and use one of these Saturdays.

The Pro From Dover is taking Mookie out to play at his club this afternoon. Stay tuned to see how it went and how many times Mookie, a Pittsburgh boy, whines that Brad Marchand didn't get ejected like his homeboy, Matt Cooke. :-)

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Played a local course today. Has a nice layout but just not in the greatest condition, though the price was right. Today it was a little wet as we had a lot of rain on friday-saturday. Greens at this course need some real work. Problem is I believe this course has went through a few owners in the past few years. It sits among some very nice large houses but I know there are still many lots to be sold. Im guessing the lack of lots being bought up is why the course has not seen better upkeep.

Anyway. Things started off well. I was hitting fairways on the front (5 of 7) but struggled to hit greens and couldnt do better than 2 putts so it led to a lot of bogeys. On the back I started similar. Hitting fairways but not greens. Finally hit and a fairway and a green on the same hole (13th) but left my self with like a 75 ft putt. Three putted for bogey. After that I struggled. Had trouble hitting my fairways and still could not hit greens. Only 3/7 fairways on the back and only 4 total greens on all 18. If I could have been better on the approach I think I could have had a much better round. The rough greens (really bumpy and some pitted areas combined with being really slow) made putting tougher than it usually is for me too.

This was a warm up for the outing I am playing on Saturday. A fun scramble with folks from my old department at Southern Illinois Univ. Have 25-30 people signed up with some other alumni joining in as well.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Played on Saturday at another muni. Played a foursome (foresome???) with my son, son-in-law, and nephew for the front nine and sailed through it playing ready golf. Son and son-in-law had to run after the front 9, and just my nephew and I played the back. SSSSLLLLLOOOOWWWWW. The foursome ahead of us was OK, but the ones ahead of them were measuring every shot and putt like it was the back 9 at Augusta and spent the allowed 5 minutes looking for lost balls. Traffic jam. Called the clubhouse to get them moving. They stopped measuring the fairway shots. What the heck happened to ready golf?

We got through it, but I developed one heck of a pull and 7 balls went into the void. Had fun, but the score was not what I had planned. Had some great shots, but that pull was driving me nuts. Went to the driving range and figured out I was outside inning my swing. Yuk! Major yuk. Two weeks from tomorrow playing Grand Pines in Orlando. Will update you all with the autopsy.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

My current sticks...

Driver: TaylorMade R11 Regular 10.5*

3 Wood: Callaway Steelhead 3+ (Soon to be replaced by a Callaway X-Hot... Just need to save up $ for a bit)

Hybrid: Callaway Razr X HL 3H

Irons: Callaway Razr X Black (4-9, PW, AW, SW) Looking to replace the SW though... Just not feeling the matched SW...

Putter: Some generic blade putter my dad won in a golf league raffle about 10 years ago...

That being said, I wanted to look into new putters... I have no clue what the hell I'm looking for though... Like I said, I'm using some generic putter right now... Just took it and made due... Beginning to think I am leaving strokes out there by not having a better putter now that I'm improving my game... Just used what I had... I get the length differences... That I need to play around with... What do I want to look at with the different head shapes though? Are there advantages with a mallet vs 2-ball vs blade?

My feeling is putters are entirely personal preference. I had a blade, was using it forever but never had any distance control or feel, and I had some difficulty putting true without pulling/pushing putts. Switched to my current putter (craz-e-too Scottsdale) and so far I feel I have better control with it maintaining my intended lines. Just need to get used to the bounce on the face for distance control but even that is pretty good right now.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Yeah. Putters are weird. I prefer the blade style as well though I like them to have a bit of weight to them. I have a ping right now that I got from my dad (after he bought an oddesy 2 ball). Its got a decent weight and feel to it. I have tried some of the mallet ones and though I like the weight they seem too clunky to me. I play with a guy who uses one that reminds me of the "billy baroo" (however thats spelled) from Caddyshack. He's a good golfer but still likes to use that simple style putter.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

I have a Ping Piper and an Odyssey White Ice. I can hit long putts better with the Ping mallet, but when the greens get fast, I do better with the Odyssey's softer touch. Never been a good putter, but I've made good improvements this year by focusing on softening my grip and keeping my hands, wrists and arms quiet. Unfortunately, success comes and goes in this friggin game. Just plain stays away quite a bit too. :)

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

I just shot my best round ever posting a 37-39-76 (+4), with 5 bogeys and 1 birdie. I will post more details on how my day went later. Right now...Im going for a drink.
