Re: 2013 DI BCS Thread: Thorthu Thame ish bacth!

Yes, I do. But what I'm saying is there is no "if" in regard to whether or not he lied about this. We know that he did.

Ok, then I'm not actually posting in your direction, so there's no need to read my posts. My posts were to the people who are giving him the benefit of the doubt. You clearly know he's lying. It's also clear that others don't see it so clearly. Do you not understand that?

Re: 2013 DI BCS Thread: Thorthu Thame ish bacth!

Ha, there's no debate here on whether or not he lied. There are other aspects up for debate, certainly. Even the ND homer, Craig P., said:

"Manti was not completely truthful about the parameters of the relationship. At a minimum, he embellished the amount of personal contact he'd had with the woman—while conceivable, it's highly unlikely that he met with her in Hawai'i as he told his father."

So, who is saying that he didn't at the very least lie about some of this?

Re: 2013 DI BCS Thread: Thorthu Thame ish bacth!

whatever.

So if he's a fool, his penalty is to watch the entire Weekend at Bernies movies all week.

If he's fully in on the lying- make him watch a bunch of other bad movies.

It's up to the team that drafts him if this costs him pay, and up to other companies if they hire him to endorce their product.

Other than that, I don't see any laws being broken.

Re: 2013 DI BCS Thread: Thorthu Thame ish bacth!

That's all well and good. I'm not saying he should be thrown in jail. I just don't need to be chastised (not necessarily by you) for calling Te'o what he is, a fraud. Just makes you look back at all the emotional stories and pieces done on Te'o...we were all duped and partly by him. That's what's unfortunate.

Re: 2013 DI BCS Thread: Thorthu Thame ish bacth!

The fact that he said he met her on Twitter is Twit-diculous enough. No sensible person would ever use that for personal reasons.

Re: 2013 DI BCS Thread: Thorthu Thame ish bacth!

From the UK

Maybe Te'o really was duped, or maybe he had a hand in perpetrating the Kekua myth. Either way, Notre Dame's vocal support for its star contrasts sharply with its relative silence on reported sex assaults by football players.

Te'o was a sophomore on August 31, 2010, when Lizzy Seeberg, a freshman at St Mary's College, a university across the street from Notre Dame, reported that she was sexually assaulted by a Notre Dame football player. In the stressful aftermath of the assault, which included coercion from the player's friend – "Don't do anything you would regret," the friend texted Seeberg – Seeberg took an overdose of depression and anxiety medication and died eight days later.

The most comprehensive coverage on sex assault cases at Notre Dame has come from Melinda Henneberger, who covered the school's response to Seeberg's case for the National Catholic Reporter and then provided further commentary for the Washington Post. In the course of her reporting, she was denied access to Notre Dame officials, and found out that Seeberg's family was, too.

According to the Seebergs, Notre Dame police said they weren't sure when they'd have time to follow up on the case. "They said they were pretty busy," Mary Seeberg said, "because it's football season and there's a lot of underage drinking."

And there was another young woman. She was a freshman when she reported being raped by a football player at a party. Henneberger reported that after the woman endured the same coercion that Seeberg faced, she dropped the report. She lived, and the player continued to play the field.

As in many football communities, when Notre Dame does well, the money flows in: not just to the school, but to the towns outside the stadium gates. In South Bend, when the football team is winning – when 80,000 people buy tickets to sit and drink and watch football in the shadow of "Touchdown Jesus" – the otherwise blighted local economy basks in the glow of $10 million spent locally each home game. When wins are fewer, times are leaner.

But fandom – and access to lore – is always accessible whether times are good or bad. So when scandal hits, communities tend to favor the institution over the individual. It's why Penn State fans welcomed coach Bill O'Brien back with a standing ovation. It's why University of Texas officials are comfortable enough to return two players accused of sexual assault to the roster even as police say the investigation continues. And it's why a football community and police department in Ohio are co-battling a media storm around allegations both worked together to tamp down reports of rape at the hands of two star players.

A hoaxing isn't anything like sex assault accusations, but that's the whole point. Regardless of whether or not Manti Te'o was fooled, and regardless of what Notre Dame officials have to say, in the end, no one will get hurt but those who lied and those who protected liars.

The opposite is true for the women who reported assault and those who have been denied access to the truth afterwards.

Re: 2013 DI BCS Thread: Thorthu Thame ish bacth!

I guess I can just add the meat of the article:

Manti Te'o has said he was a victim of a cruel hoax, so many are wondering why he continued to perpetuate the lie that his girlfriend had died after he found out that it was all a scam.

Multiple media outlets have found numerous instances of the Notre Dame linebacker talking about Lennay Kekua as if she had existed after Dec. 6, the date that he and the university say he found out that the girl that he thought he was having a relationship with and who died of leukemia was made up.

At the Heisman Trophy presentation Dec. 8 in New York, ESPN's Chris Fowler asked Te'o what moment of his very public story of tragedy he would remember.

"I think I'll never forget the time when I found out that, you know, my girlfriend passed away and the first person to run to my aid was my defensive coordinator, Coach [Bob] Diaco, and you know he said something very profound to me," Te'o said. "He said, 'This is where your faith is tested.' Right after that, I ran into the players' lounge and I got on the phone with my parents -- and I opened my eyes and my head coach was sitting right there. And so, you know, there are a hundred-plus people on our team and the defensive coordinator and our head coach took time to just go get one [of those players]. You know I think that was the most meaningful to me."

Te'o also said on ESPN Radio the same day that he hoped his grandmother, who died Sept. 12, and his girlfriend, who was reported to have died on the same day, were proud of him.

The Associated Press turned up two more instances during that gap between Dec. 6 and Dec. 26, the date when Te'o told Notre Dame that he knew of the hoax, when the football star mentioned Kekua in public.

During another interview at the Heisman ceremony that ran on WSBT.com, the website for a South Bend TV station, Te'o said: "I mean, I don't like cancer at all. I lost both my grandparents and my girlfriend to cancer. So I've really tried to go to children's hospitals and see, you know, children."

In a column that first ran in The Los Angeles Times, on Dec. 10, Te'o recounted why he played a few days after he found out Kekua died in September, and the day she was supposedly buried.

"She made me promise, when it happened, that I would stay and play," he said Dec. 9 while attending a ceremony in Newport Beach, Calif., for the Lott Impact Awards.

Re: 2013 DI BCS Thread: Thorthu Thame ish bacth!

So what if he did? Seriously? Spoken like a true ND ballwasher.

At the very least, people should be able to admit the basic facts. Beyond that, my problem is he received a ton of publicity and condolences for this when he could have put an end to all of it. He's a fraud.

I don't care at all about college football. I couldn't have told you until a week ago who this guy was.

And I think it's completely possible that he's very innocent and naive, and got caught in something. I mean, aside from a hoax, it could be the old "Hey, how come you don't have a girlfriend?" "Uh, I do. Yeah. I met her in camp last summer. She's from another state, though." Everybody knows somebody who tried that at one point. (Another variation: "You're still a virgin, loser!" "No I'm not!" "OK, when?" "Uh, last summer. I was visiting relatives in California, so you wouldn't know the girl." We could call that the "DaveStPaul in 10th grade" version. :D)

As soon as somebody asks you about that again, you've got to figure out what to do. Yeah, if you go, "You know what? I just made that story up," it might blow over. But it also might be used against you. So people double-down. Pretty soon it's snowballed. It's not complicated.

You're right about the basic facts, though: He didn't tell the truth. I guess for you that's all you need: He's a liar, and a fraud, and pathetic, and deserves our scorn! I say: People screw up, man. Find something actually bad to worry about.

Re: 2013 DI BCS Thread: Thorthu Thame ish bacth!

Ya because nobody makes fun of fox news...
I know J.D. stands for "Just Dumb" but sit the **** down.

Doesn't matter if you make fun of fox news. you know they lie. yet you still watch them. and even worse, you still believe them.

And you mad at Manti Teo? okay....

The reason it bothers me is because of all the publicity/condolences, etc. he got out of it--and even after he knew it was a hoax yet continued to advance the lie. So, yes, he has been proven to be a liar and a fraud. I'm not saying he should be thrown in jail, or that nobody should draft him or that he can't recover from this. But at the same time, I was riled up by some people who couldn't/wouldn't/didn't/didn't want to admit that Te'o clearly lied and at the very least furthered the hoax.

Te'o is getting what he deserves now, so he'll have to deal with that. Life goes on, but make no mistake, there is no debate here.

A guy who has a scouting service for NFL teams was on the local radio yesterday. He said they (his service) knew the girlfriend was fake. His speculation was that the player's "family adviser" (read also "agent") may have created the persona of the girlfriend to keep the player's name in the news.
