Re: 2013 DI BCS Thread: Thorthu Thame ish bacth!

Here's an interesting read: http://collegespun.com/big-east/not...-manti-teos-dead-girlfriend-hoax#.UPg-8mfKbnj

A few interesting thoughts therein:

We all saw this coming. Well, not ALL of this — but enough to make too many of us shudder. Notre Dame is not like most schools with big-time athletic programs — our student body population pales in comparison to other large schools. And what does that mean? Well, word spreads fast on Notre Dame’s campus, and many students knew a long time ago that there was something very fishy (or should I say, cat-fishy) about Manti Te’o's relationship with ‘Lennay Kekua’.
The debate among teammates wasn’t whether or not Manti actually knew this girl — it was clear that they had been in contact; no, players just didn’t think that it was fair to call Lennay Kekua Manti’s girlfriend, period (it is well-known on campus that he has had relations with other girls during his time at Notre Dame). They recognized what was going on for what it was — a terrible publicity stunt used to fuel Manti Te’o's Heisman campaign.
Manti knew that it was over-the-top — his teammates had gotten that sense a long time prior. And now he was in too deep. More and more questions were asked about this fascinating story, and he kept answering them, calling Kekua “the love of his life”, even though he was digging a deeper and deeper hole for himself. And it didn’t help that his family, and specifically his father, Brian Te’o, was also talking about the incident, or lying as it appears.

And yet, despite all of this, I genuinely believe Manti was duped, I truly do. I think Manti was fooled, got caught in a media frenzy and exaggerated their “relationship”. I don’t, however, think he orchestrated the deception. He made the mistake of running with the story rather than admitting the truth about the situation. He should have gotten away from this story at the very start — when she “passed”, he should have expressed his condolences to the family that he believed she had and moved on, rather than draw more attention to it.

Seems like a fair conclusion to reach at this point. I'm still not sure if he knew she was a fake online girlfriend or not, but I do know for sure that he hammed it up at the most opportune time possible. He lied for publicity, and those lies spun out of control. That it worked for as long as it did (as far as Heisman hype goes) meant that a day like yesterday was inevitable.

I want to know what Hitler thinks of all this...
I'd be surprised if a YouTube search for "Hitler Te'o" didn't give us at least one good result already.

So what if he did? Seriously? Spoken like a true ND ballwasher.

At the very least, people should be able to admit the basic facts. Beyond that, my problem is he received a ton of publicity and condolences for this when he could have put an end to all of it. He's a fraud.

What basic facts? Agenda-driven under-sourced nonsense on the same journalistic level that allowed the story to go this long in the first place? That a bunch of people are butt-hurt because they got conned? That it's a big stretch to think this was conceived to push a Heisman campaign considering that, at the time it broke (two games into the season), Te'o wasn't a Heisman candidate?

I think this is a reasonably objective list of the things that we can take to be true:
* Manti was not completely truthful about the parameters of the relationship. At a minimum, he embellished the amount of personal contact he'd had with the woman—while conceivable, it's highly unlikely that he met with her in Hawai'i as he told his father.
* Manti had lengthy phone conversations that were purported to be with "Lennay".
* There's a ton of twitter smoke indicating that he was clueless that "Lennay" didn't actually exist.

Why he wasn't completely truthful, I don't know. The most plausible reason, for me, is a combination of getting caught up in the media wave and embarrassment about the phone/internet-only nature of the relationship. It's consistent with stories from other people who claim similar experiences (absent the high-profile football player part).

That's not the only plausible explanation, but it's the one that requires the fewest lies from the fewest people with no reason to tell them. In any event, I'm keeping an open mind, and I'd encourage others to do the same.

Basic facts: he lied and didn't put an end to well publicized reports that he met her (a story conveniently taken down only recently), etc. He was more than fine with going along with that. He's a fraud. And even if he was deceived in the slightest, his role as a complicit liar more than cancels that out. I have zero sympathy for him.

You all are missing the real question: why? The how and the who is just scenery for the public. Te'o, Kekua, Tuiasosopo, Kelly. Keeps 'em guessing like some kind of parlor game, prevents 'em from asking the most important question, why? Why was she made up? Who benefited? Who has the power to cover it up? Who?

If they are all lying the why is easy- Heisman. Makes him look good outside of football.

If he's just a very, very, very bad judge of a person, then it's hard to say.

Nice movie reference there.

Anyway, this whole things is a great cover up for a gay man at a Catholic University. Have a girlfriend that doesn't exist, kill her off, and then you can just be single and heartbroken and no one will start wondering why you aren't hooking up with the ladies on campus.

It's telling that he referenced his dead girlfriend on Dec 28th after she resurrected herself and called him on Dec 26th. Ooooopsie!

Curious what you mean here...

?

that's not obious?

If he's fully on the up and up- then he was totally duped into thinking some person was this fake woman. In this age of massive social media, skype, FaceTime, etc. Heck, we even have ads that tell you about getting background checks. To be that "deeply in love" with a fake person seems like a rather bad judgement of a person.

Again, that's if he's not lying at all.

edit- that's why it's bad on either side of the coin. One side is clearly worse than the other, certainly. But IF he's on the up and up, he's still not in the total clear, IMHO.

Isn't there a show on MTV about people getting duped like this though? Maybe this will be one of the episodes!

Just thinking- funny about the timing of this sports controversy. Since Lance is supposed to splill the beans tonight on the BIG O network.

Re: 2013 DI BCS Thread: Thorthu Thame ish bacth!

Based on how long this played out, it would be an entire season. Or 3.

Well, I remember one episode of the show where the people had communicated for like 10 years. Of course, that could just be selective hearing. I'm usually very busy on the computer or reading while my wife has the show on.

Re: 2013 DI BCS Thread: Thorthu Thame ish bacth!

But we already know that he did in fact lie about this...so he's not on the up and up.

You do know what the word "IF" means, don't you?

I know you don't think he's fully involved, but a few other posters here still give him some leeway.

Re: 2013 DI BCS Thread: Thorthu Thame ish bacth!

Yes, I do. But what I'm saying is there is no "if" in regard to whether or not he lied about this. We know that he did.
