2013 Cycling Thread

You know the biggest thing about this sport that most people don't know, is how #### addictive it is. it's worse than golf.

Yep. I'm old, fat, and slow but I'm going for 3K in commutes. I used to golf 25+ rounds, now I'll play only 3-4 rounds with half being scrambles. Really golf has become an excuse to party.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

Did my fastest century ever today: 3hr, 15 minutes. Of course, it goes a lot quicker if you don't have to ride the last 43 miles after one of your tubes buckles for no reason whatsover (flat ground, no pothole, not even a pebble). Trek and I will be having words on Monday... Grrrrrr. 99.9% positive that my frame has an "original owner lifetime warranty" so shouldn't cost me any money, just a bit of the riding season.

How did this end up? Take it to a local dealer?
Let me know if they didn't help you out...I can try to push some buttons on my end since you bought it from us.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

I'm surprised it buckled. I thought carbon was supposed to esplode.

Funny you should ask...just talked to the local dealer where I took it. They predict that Trek will claim it was damaged by an impact (it wasn't) and deny the claim - this has apparently happened 2x to them recently. He says that for the amount that it would cost to ship it back and forth and fool with Trek (which the dealer has to do for me, of course, and I have to pay if/when Trek denies the claim), I could just get a local carbon shop (allegedly *not* his brother's place) to put a permanent "splint" on the leg.

Nice little good-cop/bad-cop setup that Trek has going. Really steamed right about now...

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

I think it's Chris Calfee that does carbon repairs. Might be worth checking out. He built carbon frames for Lemond to ride in the Tour.

Hmmm, sounds interesting. Most of the time when we do warranty claims, we don't have to send the frame back...they just approve/deny the claim based on pics and our feedback. And if we do have to send the frame back, Trek will send us a UPS call tag so that neither us nor the customer will have to pay for shipping.

It almost sounds from what you're describing that this dealer just doesn't want to deal with the warranty claim and wants you to get the frame repaired. Odd. In the three years that we've been open, we've only had Trek deny one warranty claim...and that was due to our feedback telling them that we didn't view it as a valid warranty.

On the flipside, if you do opt to get it repaired, Calfee does do great work. We've sent a few frames to them for repair (both Trek and non-Trek) and they always turn out well. Most you can't even tell that it was repaired at all.

ASPLODE!!!

Re: Vuelta. Interesting stage today. Nibali shows a small chink in his armor with only one week remaining. With still a good amount of climbing, anything can happen. Pretty fun Vuelta so far, although I'm sure the riders aren't as thrilled with all the mountaintop finishes as us spectators are. ;)

This is what happened to my friend on his Madone. Frame was damaged on the bottom side of the chain stay. Trek rejected it as an impact. His homeowners insurance did cover his bike generously, translating his 2008 six series to a 2013 six series. After getting a loyalty discount from Trek/Penn he was able to replace his frame with an entire new bike. Trek did require his frame to be returned/destroyed when he accepted the discounted bike as a replacement, but he did keep all the components.

I don't think dealers like to support bikes they don't sell with the bike companies, and I really can't blame them. Lot's of work for little money. When I started cracking my Bontrager rims at the holes, nobody wanted to work with me since I wasn't the original owner.

I also had a successful claim with homeowners when I wrecked my bike, if you have coverage and can afford to make a claim it would likely pay out.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

3 seconds. Wow, Horner could really do this and become the first American to win the Vuelta.
Regardless of the outcome, it certainly has been an exciting Vuelta.

Horner takes the Red. I think he is stronger than Nibali and Valverde, if he stays calm and doesn't blow up chasing a Purito attack he should win this. Let J-Rod attack, then chase him down!

He's going to win it. I again have nothing nice to say.

Nibali always makes me regret rooting against him. Even though I know I shouldn't believe in Horner, I can't help rooting for a guy who finds his way to the end of a stage after being knocked out and I'm assuming basically abandoned. This was cool too. http://gritandglimmer.com/chris-horner-gives-fallen-rider-and-bike-a-2k-ride-to-the-finish/

Nibali gave him a battle so hats off to him.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

It looked like Nibali had him on the ropes a couple of times with a few of the attacks, but each time Horner clawed his way back up. And then Nibali just blew himself up from all the expended energy and Horner floated away.

I also have some doubts as to whether this victory was achieved cleanly...but at the same time I can't help but be happy for him. I mean, this is a guy that was dominating the domestic pro scene back when I first got into road cycling and here he is still chugging away, finally given his chance to lead a team at a Grand Tour (and not blow it by crashing out). He's shown his flashes of great talent throughout the years, so I don't think that this comes completely out of nowhere...but he's just never shown it before for three straight weeks.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

As a FDJ lackey I finally have something good to say: Kenny Elissonde

Aside from that, well, I have nothing nice to say.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

I have found the Vuelta to be pretty entertaining. Horner seems to be a pretty decent guy and I am enjoying what I have seen of him in this race.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

I agree with XYZ, I have nothing nice to say about this. Well at least Lo Squalo tried but beyond that nothing. 42 year olds shouldn't be winning GTs especially when they have ZERO pedigree.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

Nibali might not be the most pure talented rider, but he's old school. The way he rode this race and the Giro(going on the attack in the leader's jersey), he's a throwback to the riders of yesteryear. He doesn't ride scared, he's not afraid to risk it all or protect his overall placing by riding conservatively(Levi, and pretty much every other grand tour contender). He's willing to go all out, and if it doesn't work, at least he gave it his all.

That really made the Angliru stage fun to watch. He could have just sat on Horner's wheel the whole time, and hope for something at the last minute. But that's not him.
