2013 Cycling Thread

Stage 19 canceled due to snow and bad weather on the already revised route, and in far less shocking news.. Di Luca tossed out of the race for tripping an OOC test for EPO.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

Was considerate of Duarte to deposit the contents of his energy drink on the ground before crossing the finish line in the ITT. I know this happens, but I'd never seen it in a race before.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

Cav wins the last stage. Nibali ends up with two stage wins. Great race for Nibali.

Congrats to all the USCHO Velogames finishers. It was a long three weeks with very tough weather. :)

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

Wiggins out for the Tour due a knee problem.

Best quote about the situation is from Sky manager Dave Brailsford:

He hasn’t been able to train hard since the Giro and now he needs further rest. Whilst we all know these things happen in sport, it doesn’t take away from the fact that this is a huge disappointment for everyone in the team – and above all for Brad.

Somehow I doubt Froome feels this way.... ;)

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

Been watching the Tour of Switzerland this week, and not sure if that's a country I could live in. Maybe it's just the region they're routing the race through, but so far, it seems like the entire country is just a bunch of long, narrow valleys, maybe a half mile, mile wide, connected by little mountain passes. It is very beautiful though, luxuriantly green.

A great third stage the other day, won by Sagan, where the final climb was little more than a car width. Add a little wet, and it was truly an epic little climb, and Sagan outdid himself by staying in the front three on the narrow road, despite being in a world of suffering to do so, escaping in a small group on the descent, and then winning the sprint to the line.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

The Dauphine was boring as crap and I really hope this isn't a precursor for the Tour AC, Valverde and Rodriquez didn't really do a whole lot it was all Sky train all the time.

Agreed re: The Dauphine. What a snoozefest - Tour du Suisse has been much more entertaining. Sadly I expect nothing motr than a three week exaggerated version of The Dauphine for The Tour. Sky hasn't even unleashed its full heft yet and has been able to do whatever it wants, whenever it wants...all season. Considering the route offers all of about three non-TT chances for GC contenders to make up time, Boassen Hagen and Eisel will sit on the front for 80km, then guys like Kiriyienka and Sivtsov will somehow be able to set a grueling pace on the hills. Merely for entertainment purposes, I hope noted climber  Geraint Thomas can even help drive a 450W pace that keeps the world's best climbers at bay. Just imagine if Uran, Henao and Wiggins were all here, too. It's going to be laughable and I have no idea how anyone is going to combat it. I think the only hope rests with Contador showing up in the "form" he did for the 2011 Giro.

I really think the only thing that is going to make it entertaining is if Froome loses time early via a crash or something and is forced to go full gonzo at some point. We've never even seen him fully unleashed. Just once I'd like to see it as it would be hilarious.

The whole country isn't like that, but that terrain is certainly prominent and of the sort Switzerland is known for. Found it funny to see your comments as I'm the opposite -- there's probably nowhere else I'd rather live (for a variety of reasons), but it's notoriously difficult to get into even with some pretty useful professional capabilities and language skills. I doubt he reads this thread, but LynahFan and his wife recently spent a year or two there...he'd probably have some really good insight.

Also, velogames is open for the TDF. I've been messing around with a team a bit and have to say it seems pretty tricky considering the rider point settings. This one might offer more flexibility than any I can recall over the past few years...

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

So I'm watching the 100 years of the TDF special they had on NBC sports last night, I knew the finals had run late but set the dvr to run long so I figure no problem. Am really getting into the old photo's of the cyclists carrying their tires over their shoulder and going up the mountains on gravel roads and drinking wine at the rest stops was pretty cool, their up to Fausto Coppi winning in 1949 they go to commercial and then they come back and it's the 90's with Miguel Indurain. *** !!! To make up the hour the hockey game ran long they decided to cut an hour out of a 2 1/2 program. What idiots, couldn't preempt one of the infomercials they run or a NHL 36 that they are showing for the 1,000th time. luckily they are replaying it on Friday, unless it's preempted by the tiddlywinks championships or some hunting show. Definetly catch it it's pretty good it seems to have been done pre lance admission because they showed him in the opening, I didn't watch the end to see how they handle the drug years. It's interesting to note the first big drug scandal was in 1924 when riders were using cocaine and Chloroform? to help them win.

Won't bother listing my team early again since I know I'll change it 14 times between now and Saturday, but I did create a USCHO league:

League Name: USCHO
League Code: 24061830

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

I agree with what I've read here, Swiss was excellent, Dauphine was poor. I also see TST and Conti in particular seem to be quite confident, which I like.

I'm in the League, I like what I have!

Alberto Contador
Alejandro Valverde
Jurgen Van den Broeck
Thibaut Pinot
Marcel Kittel
Adriano Malori
Thomas Voeckler
Marcel Sieberg
Mark Cavendish

Weakest man in Sieberg but I'm hoping he gets some Greipel assist points or something...
