2013 Cycling Thread

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

Yes, the guy falling off the mountain was great. I have a .gif but it is too big... Maybe if I just link it?
I guess this works.

Noticed that at the time also. Hope the guy is alright...tough to tell for certain but it looks like it could have been a rather lengthy fall. I like how the fan with the camera hardly reacted. Wiggins and Hesjedal both don't start today after both cite illness the reason for losing chunks of time over the past few days. "Nice" weather yesterday and sounds like some more today. Interesting stage on hand -- seems to be some belief it will come down to a field sprint but I don't know if I'm buying that. With more crap weather I think we'll see some splits develop over those hills at the end. Also, scoped out velogames and was amused that at the moment myself and sagard are actually in a dead tie for first with 2404.

Interesting stage at the ToC yesterday also. Looked like it would be rather uneventful but a select group uses a crosswind to splinter the peloton and takes about a minute on the field. Mancebo missed it but Van Garderen didn't and he now has the lead.

My run in the USCHO maglia rosa appears to be over. It was a good run, but with Ryder and Bradley feeling under the weather my team is going to withdraw and prepare for France.

Do you have the sniffles like Sir Wiggo? :)

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

Nope my excuse is allergies. I'm allergic to downhills and rain.

Should be a fun final week, unless Nibali is actually too strong for the field.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

Cavendish wins again. Looks like I was nearly right with thinking a split would occur on those late small climbs, but the weather cleared up and they weren't able to stay away. In the ToC, Van Garderen evidently crushed the ITT though I haven't watched it yet. As for Saturday's Giro stage, if I had to design a course suited to my talents...this wouldn't be it, but it sure should make for quite the fun stage to watch. Nice 75km uphill drag to Sestriere and then a killer final climb that I believe ends on an unfinished stretch of road.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

Not so fast on the stage profile. Stage has cut Sestries due do snow, so its essentially 170 K stage with just the finishing climb to Jafferau. Additionally the stage tomorrow has been changed. No Mont Cenis, they will start after that, then climb Telegraphe before finishing somewhere on Galibier above Valloire.

Crap. Thought I had heard that but then an admittedly lazy quick search didn't see it anywhere so I posted as was.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

No so fast on my part too. No finish on Galibier tomorrow either. No real idea if there even will be a stage. My best hope is no stage tomorrow and race the original stage in place of the rest day on Monday.

Today Nibali was awesome. Shorts, no gloves! And Santa was huge too, but then who else but Santa could win a stage in the snow.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

Course change again! Now its back to the original stage with Cenis to a finish on Galibier at the Pantani Monument, 4K from the summit. IF this happens, then its still a good stage.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

I need to get a Vini Fantini jersey, but the only ones available are before they added Acqua & Sapone as sponsors. Those green bubbles make the jersey, without them it just looks too close my Farnese Vini one, so what's the point? Maybe next year's version will have them.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

True about the kit, but if I recall correctly, A&S is somehow tied to DiLuca and if he is gone, they might be too. I'm not sure how long his contract is for.

Also for anyone interested, here is the full last climb. It was filled and save but couldn't be transmitted live due to the weather. Best I can figure, that's still the plan. Not sure where exactly on the Galibier this is situated, but this certainly looks like cycling weather to me: http://valloire.livecam360.com/setaz

And now that I think about, that's actually the sort of conditions I'd prefer. At least the sun is out for a change. This 108 nonsense we saw earlier in the ToC...not my bag. Speaking of which, Van Garderen finishes a few seconds back on the Queen Stage today and has the win all but wrapped up. I believe it will be his first World Tour victory. Not the strongest field of GC guys out there this year, but between TVG's seeming progression and Evans' strong showing in the Giro, maybe BMC will be a player in the TDF...unlike last year.

I don't care if they're not riding hard; this is beautiful.

How those guys ride in bare arms and without shoe covers when it's like 32 degrees out there just baffles me. I'm cold when it's like mid-40's.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

Climbing the Galibier obviously confused the peloton today. They thought that they had to race it like the Tour and no real contenders could go on the attack until the last 2 K. Still a good win for Visconti, I've always like him as a rider.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

As I posted earlier though, the Mont Cenis climb was absolutely gorgeous.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

Didn't realize this, but Tuesday's stage took the riders back over the Mont Cenis in the opposite direction from Sunday. Still beautiful.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

Gorgeous yet again.

Good stage today. As expected it took a while to ramp up but ended up resembling an Olympic RR or Classics stage over the past 20 km. That climb was only 5.3km I think and it's amazing that it could blow apart a field of pros the way it did. I expected some gaps but figured they'd be small and OPQS would reel it in. So much for that - and it wasn't even close.

Uphill TT tomorrow. Have to figure the top GC guys will all be up near the top. And I'm including Santambrogio since I wager he has now recovered from his sandbag job...
