2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

As for the Yale quip, the reason you don't hear trash talk from them is (this is not directed at you but more of a general statement) because they don't have many members of their fanbase who are both louder than the more reasonable ones of the group and say really strange things with an attitude as though their team has been relevant nationally at the D-I level for 20 years or more. (#1)

A shining example of such is the fracas from the mayor's cup game and the fallout resulting from it: we had SCSU, MN, UND, Cornell, Clarkson, and Ferris State fans all wondering how Union fans could even begin to think that the blame for the fracas could be split 50/50 or even more in Union's favor (I am not trying to re-incite this debate here, I am just trying to provide an example.) (#2)

TL;DR maybe some of the RPI fan frustration comes from our recent struggles, but some of it comes from the uninformed/ridiculous Union fans (like the one who called RPI's team 'classless' because they didn't shake hands after the game at Union this season, and the one who called me a 'little bi****' for being an RPI fan who did nothing but cheer for my team the whole game, or the Union fan who flipped off RPI players after the second goal in the Mayor's Cup game which I have never seen an RPI fan do personally to another team, ever... I could continue). Thanks for reading my admittedly rambling essay, lol, and I hope it clears things up, from one honest fan to another just trying to explain where some of this comes from. (#3)

A few thoughts:

1. What's the definition of "reasonable" , "strange things" and "attitude"? My definition is probably different from yours as it is probably different from others"...

2. Not trying to bring the fracas up yet still bringing it up in a passive aggressive manner...Please speak for yourself...I know there was a partial, informal consensus from other team's fans on this matter, but are you 100% positive that each one of those fans would fully support 100% of your statement here? I personally disagree and by speaking for yourself and not trying to use others to bolster the validity of the statement allows me to see the intended sincerity of your statement. I work in conflict resolution and arbitration so I see the "mob validity" tactic used constantly.

Furthermore, did you interview all 7,000 folks at the game that actually witnessed the proceedings to see where they stood on your assessment or did you just rely on the handful of folks with second hand opinions that came here to discuss the incident in order to generate the blanket generalizations and conclusions in this post? Union fans on this board get a lot of grief over supposedly not knowing how to deal with numbers or statistics. Speaking for myself, I believe your sample size it a little too small to making such confident statements about the populations in question...

3. You have never seen an RPI flipping the bird to someone associated from Union? I have. You have never seen or heard or read an RPI fan refer to the Union team as classless or worse? I've read multiple examples on your home thread alone...Both fan bases have crummy or insensitive fans. Speaking for myself, I have been very frustrated over the years with the immature and childish behavior exhibited in front of me by a few fans that root for RPI. I have been treated very poorly by RPI fans at HFH just as RPI fans have been treated poorly by Union folks at Messa. Is your frustration more valid than mine simply because "it just is" or is it more valid due to recent events where Union has generally gotten the best of RPI? Before Union made their rise, they were the punching bags of RPI and the folks I have seen on your thread and the RPI fans that I have witnessed over the years rarely skipped an opportunity to belittle and marginalize our players and the efforts of the team as a whole...I even brought up this little nugget of truth when I first joined the USCHO.com boards and I posted as such on the RPI home thread. As you can go back and see, I got quite an earful as well as neg rep for going onto someone else's home thread and posting about unfairness and frustrations with their actions. Perhaps you can even sympathize or understand how your fellow posters on your home thread must have felt having a Union fan come on your turf and speak out about your "lack of class" and "chest thumping"... Now, put yourself in the shoes of a Union fan on the Union thread...

I have no problem with you being an honest fan. Just don't expect people on the Union thread to not be annoyed and frustrated with throwing out blanket generalizations about the Union fanbase when you come over here. Furthermore, don't expect us to not support and root for our players and coaches...If you are indignant and offended by what you read here, by all means vent it over on your thread, which I have noticed you already have...

One last point: I personally believe that BOTH Union and RPI are top notch education institutions. Most of the folks that I know with experience at both schools feel the same way. Furthermore, the ECAC is also both a top shelf hockey league but also quite possibly the best league in the nation from an academic standpoint...Let's ALL stop sniping about math and reading comprehension issues between UC and RPI and focus that "safety school" vitriol where it belongs: Every other league in the NCAA ;)

Once again, good luck and no injuries to both squads this weekend!

Keith.

A significant portion of the RPI posters never attended the school. Although I am very happy to have them on board, I do not hold them to the same academic standards. I assume that not all Union posters ever attended Union either. Someone has a lot of explaining to do if one not-to-be-named poster actual attended Union, let alone graduated. :)

I do hope that both schools win their remaining four games. (Purely from a selfish viewpoint as far as Union is concerned.)

I wouldn't last a half semester at either Union or RPI, but two of my kids went to Union and I love the school and I'm a big fan of Union hockey. My own hockey roots go back to Murray Armstrong and some great DU teams and the old WCHA ( BTW I put Harkness with Murray as an all-time great) . I have found ECAC fans nowadays to be very polite compared to our student "balcony" in DU's old arena.

Obviously Union is a pretty new program in D1 terms, without the history and championships of RPI, but we are close to the top these days. I sat there in Bridgeport a couple of years ago not quite accepting that Unions program had indeed reached the NCAA tournament and then again last season when we defeated BC in Providence. Now top of the ECAC and #3 in the country is nice but I worry about how Clarkson would like to repay the favor in a couple of days. Hope some of the injured return soon. Top to bottom the ECAC is a tough place.

I don't understand the vitriol that comes from the RPI visitors to the Union thread as I don't stop in the frozen drivel site to comment or even read often. I guess I will take the negative feedback that the RPI folks give me here as a badge of honor.

I will leave statistics and pairwise to those who comprehend them, I will be happy just getting tickets to see Union play in the NCAA's.

Nottme: You will always be most welcome as a member of the Union College Hockey Family. There is also a link somewhere on the Union Web Site to become a member of the "Dutchmen Blades" as well. Hope to see you at tournament time. Please keep posting here. Your opinions are valued.

I agree that banner is misleading. It should be titled "NCAA tournament appearances" or something of that nature.

Just a point of clarification regarding the banner, the wording on the banner was actually mandated by the NCAA. Union had nothing to do with the word choice. I also raised my eyebrows when I first saw it and asked around.

Congrats again to Cole Ikkala who has been named as a finalists for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award! To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. Cole is climbing in the ratings and is already up to forth. Keep the votes coming.

http://www.seniorclassaward.com/athletes/cole_ikkala/

Fans can vote on the Senior CLASS Award website through March 3: http://www.seniorclassaward.com/vote/hockey_2013-14/

You are allowed to vote for three candidates, if you want, each time, and there are some great distinguished and classy fellow ECAC players like Greg Carey, Any Iles, Dennis Robertson and Matt Zarbo to choose from.

Please note that Brock Higgs from RPI, another candidate, leads that team in another category, penalty minutes ... I don't think that was one of four area's of excellence the NCAA had in mind.

PIM
Brock Higgs - 57
Guy Leboeuf - 53
Jake Wood - 59

This makes Brock an official member of the RPI GOON Squad. Too bad THUGGERY was not an area of excellence. Brock would run away with the award.

This is a great honor and achievement - congrats to Cole, even if he isn't selected as the award winner in the end! This just goes to show how much of a down-to-earth, hard-working player and student he is. Here's hoping he's back on the ice this weekend!

Here's an idea. Why don't we actually read about the player himself before making sweeping judgments about him being a thug? Really a classy move to call a player who nearly died from having his throat cut by a skate a "thug".

http://www.seniorclassaward.com/athletes/brock_higgs/

Unlike most of the Union camp, I've been watching Higgs carefully all season. He's a great player and a lot of his penalty minutes came from absolutely horrible officiating calls.

Besides, I thought Union fans were claiming that the stats don't matter. Why are you now analyzing them for comparison purposes? I could bring up a list of Union players who have a high count of PIM and call them goons, too, but I choose not to do that because I know better and can't make sound judgments about their character due to the fact that I don't know them personally and have not seen them play all season. And what was that about the RPI fans being obsessed with the Union team again...?

The fact that you went out of your way to single him out as a player and look up his stats is a bit ridiculous and embarrassing, frankly. Particularly when your captain, Bodie, cross-checked him in the neck when he wasn't looking and opened Pandora's Box. Those in glass houses...

57 PIM is ideal for the 2014 senior class award?

I was just envisioning Brock being mugged by Mat Bodie, and you calling him a thug. Then I ...

Never mind. It really isn't worth my continued looking here in Sodom for righteous posters. I know who the few are.

Also, by your crazy and maligned standards, Dennis Robertson shouldn't be in the running either:

26 PEN/74 PIM

But he doesn't have "R-P-I" across his chest so that must make it okay for you then.
