I don't think penalty minutes is one of the criteria. These are all good individuals.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

What does Matt Bodie have to do with Brock's 57 PIM?

Either you're trolling or can't discern irony. He's saying that it's ridiculous to claim that one of our players is a thug while now, and in the past, defending one of your players who committed thuggery on him as a veritable saint.

Note that it doesn't make Bodie a thug, but by your (yet again) asinine standards, I could call Bodie a thug due to the fact that he has 15 PEN for 49 PIM, but I don't. I think what he did to Higgs at the Mayor's Cup was a bit despicable, but I'm not judging his whole body of work by his PIM count. If we're going to apply one standard to one player, we're going to apply it across the board.

Also, as a note, it's not like it makes a huge difference, but Higgs also has 55 PIM, not 57, which leads me to believe you're not looking things up for yourself. I'm with Ralph on this, it's not worth my time to try to clarify things for Union fans anymore, because I know who the good ones are.

He probably either went through New Math or has a child going through Common Core, where the purpose is to understand what you're doing rather than to get the right answer. :p:D

What Bodie did at the Mayor's cup was wrong, I don't think any Union fan will argue that. The criteria for the senior class award is: community, classroom, competition, and character. Everybody who is a finalist deserves to be there. The only point I am making is if the selection committee defines character as both on and off the ice, the 55 or 57 PIM could hurt Higgs chances. I'm sure Higgs' character off the ice is remarkable.

Then how come they are?

The criteria for the senior class award is: community, classroom, competition, and character. Everybody who is a finalist deserves to be there. The only point I am making is if the selection committee defines character as both on and off the ice, the 55 or 57 PIM could hurt Higgs chances. I'm sure Higgs' character off the ice is remarkable.

Then you should tell some of your "fan"base to quit using terms like "thug," "goon," etc if you truly believe that.

bs...

pim has zero to do with character. couple matching roughings or whatever while protecting teammate or goalie is meaningless
bobby orr always had a scuffle here and there and few have ever had more of it

had close to 1000 in carear, more than pts. was always top 3 on team and that was the big bad bruins era

A significant portion of the RPI posters never attended the school. Although I am very happy to have them on board, I do not hold them to the same academic standards. I assume that not all Union posters ever attended Union either. Someone has a lot of explaining to do if one not-to-be-named poster actual attended Union, let alone graduated. :)

I do hope that both schools win their remaining four games. (Purely from a selfish viewpoint as far as Union is concerned.)

I think you make a good point...As a graduate of Union, I sometimes assume that most of the fans are also associated with the school in another way....When I attended Union, most of our fans were students and staff members as well as an assortment of locals and the youth hockey league parents and kids...We were OK for D III, so we didn't attract a lot of attention...At the time, RPI was the bigger draw and playing at the higher level, so of course you guys had more fans who were just fans...

So, when I see attacks on Union as a school or on our fanbase, I normally make the connection as a slight at our graduates, which is probably not entirely the case...

Each team has crummy fans, both graduates/staff or just casual fan...

Your home thread over there has plenty of inflammatory posts about Union as a whole, but I'm OK with that because your fans should be able to speak their mind over there...I just am protective of the Union thread since I feel Union fans should have the same opportunity to post negative or inflammatory things about RPI or any other team for that matter...RPI folks may not like what is being said over here, but its our thread and I just ask that RPI folks show a little restraint when commenting over here...Call us mouth-breathers, droolers, village idiots whatever all you want on your turf...Just be respectful guests that's all...

I'll now go back to watch the Olympics ... :)

Keith.

Hi Union fans,

You are having an awesome year (again). Your team truly has the potential to go all the way this year.

I am a Quinnipiac fan with an observation that affects both of our teams. Last year, we were both put in the East Regional in Providence for the NCAA Tournament. If we had been placed in separate brackets there would have been three ECAC teams in the Frozen Four. This year, the speculation on the "Bracketology" piece on the USCHO.com website has Union and QU placed in the East Regional again. This is ridiculous. I would be willing to have QU placed further away out west rather than to have ECAC teams in the same bracket. What is the solution?

Thanks and good luck the rest of the way in the regular season, ECAC Tournament, and the NCAA Tournament.

I don't think there is a solution. They want the building to fill up and need teams in that region to fill it up if they can. As long as they avoid first round conference matchups then the NCAA doesn't care about having two teams from the same conference in a region.

Excellent Point !!!! Its real ..... don't know what to do about it. Your head coach was on the Committee last year, I think. We will have to see who is still standing and where they are standing after the ECAC tournament. We are both facing some tough competition these last 4 games so it may be a mute point. Unfortunately, I think money talks louder then the desire of ECAC fans to see how far their league can go. I can't speak for my other Union folks here but if Union is fortunate enough to make the tournament, I too would rather Union take a trip out west, avoiding any ECAC opponents. They are **** tough.

I would also prefer to have Q in a different bracket, you guys have a great team and it's always a battle when we face you.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

UNION FANS !!!!!
Congrats again to Cole Ikkala who has been named as a finalists for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award! To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. Cole is climbing in the ratings and is already up to forth. Keep the votes coming.

http://www.seniorclassaward.com/athletes/cole_ikkala/

Fans can vote on the Senior CLASS Award website through March 3: http://www.seniorclassaward.com/vote/hockey_2013-14/

You are allowed to vote for three candidates, if you want, each time, and there are some great distinguished and classy fellow ECAC players like Greg Carey, Any Iles, Dennis Robertson and Matt Zarbo to choose from.

Please note that Brock Higgs from RPI, another candidate, leads that team in another category, penalty minutes ... I don't think that was one of four area's of excellence the NCAA had in mind.

http://www.collegehockeynews.com/stats/team/Rensselaer/48/overall,20132014

PIM
Brock Higgs - 57
Guy Leboeuf - 53
Jake Wood - 59

This makes Brock an official member of the RPI GOON Squad. Too bad THUGGERY was not an area of excellence. Brock would run away with the award.

Cole Ikkaka - 8

A lttle over the top with this assessment since 1. - Penalty minutes are not all equal. There are good penalties - preventing a scoring chance or defending your goaltender, and bad penalties - hauling down an opponent behind his net in the final 10 seconds of a period or interference in your attacking zone when your team is on a power play. 2. About 20% of Higgs' penalty minutes came when he was defending himself after a cheap-shot assault by the Union captain.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

laughable to watch rpi fans have nothing to do but go on union thread and take it over with negativity and bs.
coming from fools like ralph who not so long ago wastrashing their dman kennedy after he left or trashing union on a blog during ncaa tourn. how did it go ralph malph? "union wont win a game or for that matter score a goal anytime soon". than about 5 minutes later go to union thread and tell them what a good season they had. phoney

one thing is certain and was stated 4 years ago, rpi is a coke program on the decline and union is on the rise. union coach will be winning for years to come long after rpi coach aka eddie haskell has been fired.

now go get the paper eddie, i need to check the standings

Laughable to watch someone who trashes anyone who doesn't have a giant maroon "U" on the front of their jersey talk about the integrity of other posters and then not back it up with anything empirical.

No one's taking anything over with negativity, we're pointing out that certain Union fans are making themselves look like absolute fools to the rest of the USCHO forum.

And stop trying to make the Eddie Haskell reference happen. No one else has caught onto it and it doesn't make any sense.

doesnt make it any less true

why the need for rpi posters to hijack the union thread. strange at best.

let union have their own and let it be much more mellow.
