2013-2014 Schedules

Re: 2013-2014 Schedules

for all around fun Killington is a blast, great skiing and a great night life as well, but man BIG bucks for lift tickets now-a-days.

Lift tickets are getting absurd everywhere. And, I suspect 80-90% of the cost goes just towards paying the liability insurance. D*mn lawyers...

Re: 2013-2014 Schedules

Speaking of SOS, Crested Butte can compete with the best. 47% Black or Double Black trails. If you really what to test yourself, that is where to go.

I love Crested Butte; best ski town in Colorado. If you are looking at SOS you need to add Silverton and Jackson to the list. All are great places for serious skiers.

A lot of it is for infrastructure that they never had before. I'm stiil amazed at the fact that the areas put here have snowmaking. That was unnecessary an unheard of 20 years ago.

Generally, snow-making involves pumping water from trout streams, or from tributaries to trout streams, both of which seriously disrupt the conditions downstream... That's not a legitimate use of natural water, IMO, and I don't even think it should be legal. (In many cases it isn't legal, from what I've read, but skiing pumps so much money into local economies that nobody complains.)

It's funny; when a mountain is clear-cut for timber by some lumber entity for the sake of board-feet, people howl, but when a skiing interest rapes a hill of timber and water to construct a de-facto amusement park- albeit at the expense of the local ecosystem -there seems to be much less outrage.

I'm sticking to the naturally-occurring faces these days, and doing more XC. (It's much funner than it sounds!) I will not no longer support the big-money ski interests who devastate the land as though it goes unnoticed.

I can't say that I disagree with those sentiments. At my age, and the fact that some areas charge an arm and a leg for a lift ticket, I'm pretty well retired from skiing - now do a little cross country and a bit of snowshoeing, but I have great memories of the pre-snowmaking days of skiing. With it possible to play golf almost 12 months per year here, that's been my focus lately.

I will say that the trail expansion in a number of areas isn't totally destructive however - on forest service land there is a certain amount of oversight, and best practices are to minimize the amount of timber cut. The biggest mountain damage issues lately have been from what used to be called Forest Fires (somebody in the PC office has decided they should be called Wild Fires to avoid offending grasslands that burn?).

Re: 2013-2014 Schedules

It was just last Winter that I finally succumbed to peer-pressure and tried XC. (It had always looked boring to me, so I'd balked at the notion for many years.)

I was wrong to have been so stubborn. XC can actually be scarier than an icy downhill slope.

If you're on a sloped and groomed XC trail with your skis in the deep ruts, you are not going to be changing direction or speed at will, or at all... All you can do is tuck and steer as best you can, while praying that no large trees are *just* off the track, and at the bottom of a steep and curvy decline.

It's a very different experience than having edges available to you for braking purposes, and that's probably why I like it so much. You are at the mercy of gravity half the time, with no available recourse aside from getting off the course without having to call an orthopedic surgeon from your cell while you are flat on your back... Ergo, you have think things through fairly carefully on most areas here in hilly Upstate NY.

(Also, I'd rate it as better cardio than downhill, if only for the sake of the %^#$ up-hills... That's where I fell last season a few times, and painfully, but running up hills on 75" XC skis is pretty good exercise!)

Some of the best cardio I have gotten in the last couple of years has come from trying to go uphill on snowshoes. I still don't quite get the gait correct, and wow if you don't move efficiently you use an awful lot of energy in the process. The downside of snowshoeing is that going downhill takes about the same amount of energy as going uphill. I guess because of my history of downhill skiing, I still enjoy the thrill of a downhill schuss, which you can't do on snowshoes.

Re: 2013-2014 Schedules

Been a while, everybody! 'Tis getting to be that time of year again. Just popping in to say howdy...for now. I am still debating on if I should now, since they are no longer in the same conference, throw my massive support behind SNC instead of cheering against them, or keep status quo....it is quite fun being the villian at the CCC. It's like a drug...not sure I can give that up. What do you think?? I had mentioned to MW last year that if his gang gets some swag for me, I could be bought. So far, crickets from that camp! :-) Hope everyone has had a great summer and I look forward to cooler temps!

We have plenty of room in our 'gang' for another member, esp. since SNC isn't scheduled to face Superior this season..No more wearing that Yellow Jacket jersey to our games though!! Hope all is well with you and your family!!

Pete:

Just think about it. POYB could actually cheer for a team playing for an NCAA bid instead of cheering for a possible champion in the mini Wisconsin league!:D

If you and the gang pitch in and get me a SNC sweater then I won't wear the UWS one in the CCC again. Unless they play each other. These are my terms! :D
