You are flat out wrong. Early Action is NOT a binding commitment anywhere - that is Early Decision. EA gives you an early acceptance and allows you to wait until April or May to decide after all of your regular decision application results are known. That is pretty basic college admissions these days. Kids sometimes apply Early Action (or in rolling admissions) to one or two schools to get an acceptance under their belt while waiting for regular admission decisions elsewhere at schools that are more of a reach for them.



With respect to Wesleyan, Laura Mead appears to have had a good freshman season for them but they are still a last place team even with her - they will need more help. Ashleigh Corvi was unbelievable for 4 years there in net and earned every second she played - a noteworthy career. That being said, I'm sure that if Coach McKenna thought one of the 2 freshman goalies would have given the team a better chance to win they would have played - clearly she did not feel that way. One of the 2 freshman had a much lower save percentage than Corvi in the 4 games she played, the other one only played two games - so the jury is definitely still out on them (not sure which is the one that you think is better than Corvi).

Even though schools that offer ED take it pretty seriously, no school really wants a student/athlete that doesn't want to be there, so they'll generally let you out of an ED commitment eventually. The one legitimate way I've seen kids get out of an ED commitment is via "inadequate finanacial aid" - if they don't have a full scholarship, they argue that they can't afford whatever residual cost they have to attend the school and if the school won't up the aid they are let out of the commitment (this is the one potential issue actually in the commitment agreement). It becomes more difficult if you have a full scholarship. In general, a school that accepts a kid ED will not let them out just because they ask but after some substatntive discussion that takes some time - maybe even enough to miss other school's application deadlines. But lots of schools (especially NESCAC at the D3 level) are pretty communicative about broken ED commitments, so if you break one the other schools will likely hear about it one way or another.

You don't have to get out of EA - it isn't binding.

Shannon Smith is from Naperville, IL. Prior to this year, she played a number of years with my daughter on the Chicago Mission. She was an important part of the success those teams had including 2 trips to the National Semi-Finals (U12 & U14) and one to the National Championship (U16). She is great on the PK (blocks alot of shots) and I loved watching her use her speed on the forecheck. When we saw her last, she had moved from Forward to Defense to fill a void left by a departed player and she looked rock-solid back there. With that kind of versatility, she will certainly be an asset to the program being built at UNE. Best of luck to a great kid!

My original post was about Early Action and you commented that it was binding, which is wrong. Read the posts again. Both of the freshmen goalies at Welseyan will have a chance to prove themselves next season - if either does half the job that Corvi did the team will be in good hands.

Thought that was the same girl my team played against last year in Crookston. Goal scorer but we contained her and stopped her goal scoring streak. Daughter played with her on a couple summer AAA teams. Great hands.

UWRF has 4 seniors of the 19 rostered players. There are 7 "recruits" on this thread listed, either Cranston is going to carry more skaters next year or there will be players with a buy out plan from him.

I have to say that I find the latter commitment somewhat surprising. A big (pretty tall with very long reach) 4 year NDC player that was pretty well-regarded by the coaches at the NDCs and got solid reviews, I figured she was a D1 player for sure. Second 4 year NDC player like this I can think of this year that I thought would be playing D1 and ended up D3. Both end up at NESCAC schools instead - academics over hockey perhaps. Or maybe two sport athletes.
