2013-2014 D1 Commitments

They don't seem to have selected as much this year for some reason.... :( May need to adjust their approach - or they decided nobody else was worth the time or scholarship given their current team.
Maybe it's a thin class this year? Maybe they don't have enough schollies freed up for this season? Could be lots of reasons.

Who are the only scholarship players leaving this year? Bolden & Motherwell? Is Burns on a scholarship?

Re: 2013-2014 D1 Commitments

They might have two more available (for a year) when Alex Carp & Haley Skarupa leave for the Olympic Team/ tryouts.

Re: 2013-2014 D1 Commitments

A quick look shows BC has 5 seniors who have played in all 21 games so far, plus one at 15 games and one more who has not seen any action. So they have six seniors who've seen significant action, with only three coming in (so far) to replace them. So it would appear that the coaches have either not yet found the right players who in their judgement would help improve the team or possibly they are still waiting for decisions on one or more they are still recruiting. And I suppose the other possibility is that they've decided to re-distribute total available scholarship money to some of the returning players as a reward for their good play?

I would be very surprised to see Carpenter and Skarupa on the Olympic team -- not because of lack of ability but because Team USA doesn't really seem to have too much in the way of openings

BC has three forwards in the active pool of 23 forwards - Carpenter, Skarupa, and Field. They usually carry 13 to a major tournament. From last year's world's, Wasylk and Lawler aren't on the active list anymore. So definitely not out of the realm of possibility that 1 of the 3 BC girls makes the team - probably Carpenter if any.

How does Team USA pick the team? Do they have a camp in August and then announce or do they carry 25+/- players and dwindle it down to 20 leading up to the Games? If it is the latter of the two then I would think 2 out of 3 would be gone perhaps 3 for 3.

Could be that some prospective players are looking at BC's roster and wondering where they would fall on the depth chart. If they only see the potential of playing a regular shift or being on one of the top two lines during the Olympic year, and then risk getting bumped by new talent or returning Olympians, BC might not win the cost / benefit debate.

I'm not sure when the Ivies send their acceptance letters, but that may put a few fish back in the pool too.

I believe it is already the case that not all the listed Harvard commits are actually ending up there.

Re: 2013-2014 D1 Commitments

Possible but BC hasn't been known to recruit very many Canadians. I can only think of one off the top of my head in Lindsay Wright (though I'm sure I'm missing a couple).
There's one on the current roster........;)

Sounds familiar.

There was a debate on this in the past. Forget whether it was this board or the Ontario one. At any rate, at the time did a check back on all the rosters since the late 90's and there were only two canucks that appeared on a BC roster over a 10 plus year time span.

I suspect that the number of BC recruits from north of the border yet to be announced is zero.

Looking at the very recent classes, I think an analogy can be made like if you can get what you need around the block, why go shopping on the other side of town? The Eagles are doing very well in attracting talented U.S. kids. Also, they are one of the few programs with only one full-time assistant, so recruiting Canada can be a bit more of a logistics problem.

My vague recollection is that BC get's certain preferential tax treatments from the local authorities. That might be another reason why they stick with US talent. Like Harvard, they can attract top US talent, and that seems to work out well for them. Harvard has had a few cream of the crop canucks on their roster over they years (Vaillancourt, Corriero, Botterill), but the vast majority of their roster are US as well. On the other side of the equation you have teams like Cornell stocked with mostly Canadians.

Re: 2013-2014 D1 Commitments

Not sure if there is any correlation but BC's mens teams have a long history of using almost all U.S. players as well.
