Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats: New season, new scoreboards, new chance at redemption

Do those Thanksgiving wishes go to non-Bobcat fans as well???

Got to watch on TV. An impressive performance and I thought you outplayed the Friars for the majority of the game. Difference in the game was Gillies in net for PC. The one thing I didn't enjoy about the broadcast is I am assuming just like on NESN games it is Quinnipiac buying the air time as opposed to SNY wanting to broadcast the game. As such...the "infomercial" for what makes Q Pac so "special" during the Intermission made me want to puke. Just sayin'!!!! But I suppose that is how/why you are getting all the recruits and players you are as no other ECAC school markets their program or spends money to market it like you guys do. I guess that is to your credit....but if they can lay off talking about the Quinnipiac "brand" so much I might be able to tolerate the broadcasts.

Happy Thanksgiving anyway Mark and if you have an extra goalie you can send our way we'll take him. (We need one badly at the moment.)

The "infomercial" is a bit much, but you're right: Quinnipiac buys the airtime, they can do what they want with it. And as a sports-loving alum, it's really awesome to see the school pushing its athletic programs the way Quinnipiac does.

As for the game, my goodness. That second Providence goal. What in the world was Sam Anas thinking? You can not throw that pass to that spot like that. He's a freshman, so maybe that's the kind of thing you can get away with in Juniors. But, you're not getting away with that play at this level. Just a total brainfart.

I've said it a number of times, the team-wide skill on this Quinnipiac team is incredible. I think they're better offensively this season than they were last season. And they were pretty darn good last season. When they shore up their defense to where it was a few weeks ago, this team is going to be very, very, very difficult to beat.

Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats: New season, new scoreboards, new chance at redemption

That Anas turnover was basically the one the one Peca had on Saturday night except for an extra pass that scored the goal. We can definitely play a lot better that is for sure.

Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats: New season, new scoreboards, new chance at redemption

They definitely need to stop giving away the freebies. They have cost us big time in the last 2 games. More than that, though, they really need to find a way to finish. Missing those wide open nets is as bad as giving the puck away. No doubt Gillies is a great goalie, but we made him look stellar last night... and that seems to be a trend over the past few years.

I'm sure they'll continue to improve as the season wears on. It's Thanksgiving and I'm thankful for the 12-2-2 start.

Mark, with this team I'm really not concerned about finishing -- they're just too skilled not to put it in the net. It's the defensive side they need to be more aware of. I'd even be willing to sacrifice a little scoring to make sure the back end is shored up -- QU's not winning a title playing defense like that.

Why can't we have both? ;)

Several of their missed opportunities I could have scored on! It's a whole lot easier to protect a 3 or 4 goal lead than 1 or 2, or have to battle back from behind.

On the defensive side, they're playing an aggressive style trying to generate offense and that's great to see, and I realize it'll take time to settle in. To be honest, I'd rather see them this way than playing a passive game. Win or lose (or tie), they're extremely fun to watch.

And, let's face it, nobody here ever expected last season's success so soon. To follow it up so far this season is just as amazing. The post season spoiled us and made us hungry for more. Heck, we even got a smile back on Minni's face! Not that any of this is a bad thing... ;)

I've seen St Cloud twice, Ferris twice, Yale, RPI, Clarkson, SLU and Bowling Green. You guys are the best I've seen with St Cloud second. As your frosh mature you will be even better.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned about last night: the crowd was amazing. Officially listed at 3520, and that was without students. Even the University Club was full. PC had a decent contingent as well. For a mid-week, pre-holiday game, and with the weather what it was, I think that's fantastic! Getting out of the lot last night took me longer than it ever has.

In case anyone's interested... yes, I am bored and can't wait for the turkey to be done! :D

Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats: New season, new scoreboards, new chance at redemption

Happy Thanksgiving to all my American hockey friends!!

I managed to watch 2 1/2 periods of the Bobcat v Friars game. Man oh man those two teams are like mirror images.
They play the same game. Great entertainment. Peca's goal was world class! Although I am a Bobcats fan it's fun
watching great hockey. Maybe it's fitting it ended in a tie.

So...I saw the Pieper brothers for the first time. I was more impressed with Bo Pieper than Canon but that doesn't mean
I didn't like what I saw in Canon. Bo is listed as 5'11" which is 1' taller than his brother but on the ice he looks a fair bit
bigger. They didn't have their best night as the only point they got was an assist by Bo. There is a lot of talent there.
Both good skaters....Bo is a very strong skater. Hard to knock off his skates. Surrey won the game 7-5 although it was
6-5 before an empty net goal sealed it for the Eagles. I think you guys will enjoy watching the Pieper brothers as Bobcats. :)

On to the Renouf twins....Jones twins graduate and in step the Renouf's. Living in Vancouver we have watched Henrik and
Daniel Sedin show that "connection" between twins. Same with the Connor and Kellen....they seem to know what their
brothers are thinking and where they are on the ice. Well ditto Jonah and Nathan Renouf. They are SO quick and by that I
don't necessarily mean skating speed. They are quick in everything they do. Last night I can't count how many times one of
the brothers came off the boards into the slot so quickly none of the opposition could react fast enough. Some will say they
are too small. Well you have to catch them to hit them! :) Even then they are willing to take a hit to make the pass.

Nathan had 2G 1A while Jonah had 1G 1A. Just like the Jones they lead by example. You guys are going to love these kids!

Not sure why another set of brothers have no commitment. The Drapluk brothers from Florida play for Surrey. They had a
great game last night. Brian had 1A while Joseph had 2G and were involved all night. Most times when I see great players go
without a scholarship it's simply poor grades.

Danton Heinen is another rookie Eagle who has been looking very very good. Will be interesting to see if he ends up with
a scholarship.

There is another player who for the moment will have to go unnamed as I think he is being given a good look. I sure like his play
but I have no say in it. :)

The future on York Hill does seem bright . ;)

Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats: New season, new scoreboards, new chance at redemption

Strength of schedule on the RPI of 24 says otherwise.

Of course, this early in the season that RPI goes off teams' records. And with so few games to judge from, their loss to QU unfairly weighs on the RPI. So, that's not really a good comparison this early in the season.

Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats: New season, new scoreboards, new chance at redemption

Game day at the Bank!

Not sure what to expect out of the Minutemen. At 3-9-2 they're having a rough year so we can't play down to their level. Hopefully there's no turkey hangover and the boys come out and handle business. They cannot afford any more of the defensive mistakes they've been making as even bad teams will take advantage of them. It's about time for an offensive explosion as well.

Go Q!

Another "football score" between Surrey and Coquitlam. Surrey 6 Coquitlam 9.

Bobcat committed players

Surrey Eagles
Jonah Renouf 2A
Nathan Renouf 1G 3A

Coquitlam Express
Canon Pieper 2G
Bo Pieper No points

Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats: New season, new scoreboards, new chance at redemption

I'm gonna be watching the third period tonight. Early in the season, finishing games was not a problem. However, they have blown leads in the third period in they're last two, both of which at home.

They should be able to grab a lead against UMass tonight. I want to see if they can limit their own mistakes and hold onto it for a full, 60 minute effort.

Go Bobcats!

Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats: New season, new scoreboards, new chance at redemption

That reaction at the end of the 2nd was out of character for Peca. Gotta wonder what the guy did to get Peca worked up like that.

Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats: New season, new scoreboards, new chance at redemption

It was ugly and didn't feel like a 6-1 win, but I'll definitely take it. I need to sit down and watch the game on DVR to see few things over again. UMass was... terrible... for the most part. Then they started gooning it up, using their size instead of their skill. The scoreboard clearly showed that didn't work too well.

We just weren't as smooth as we've been. That might be a by-product of trying to shore up the defensive end to eliminate the turnovers. The breakout wasn't nearly as fast as its been.

Perhaps it was a bit of turkey hangover, but we just weren't the same tonight. Whatever it was, it's a win and we move on to Union and RPI on the road next weekend.

Peca took a good whack during the faceoff and was muscled to the ice. As he was getting up he got hacked again on the ankles. He turned and cross-checked the guy in retaliation and got caught. He was given a double minor for slashing and roughing. At that point in the game the Minutemen had already gotten dirty and were trying to draw in the Bobcats.

Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats: New season, new scoreboards, new chance at redemption

Always nice to get a win. That is a terrible UMass team who I would hope to avoid wasting our time against in the future. We can find a better opponent than that who won't goon it up after getting down big time. Onto the capital district next weekend for a big set of games.
