With his record at QU I can't believe there would be any "Rand haters"!

Ken

You'd be surprised. There were those that wanted a change with the constant .500 seasons and no NCAA berths once the Bank opened in 2007.

Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats: New season, new scoreboards, new chance at redemption

Nice to see the occasional other team fans commenting about our hockey team. Their comments are certainly “illuminating”. Some people just don’t like to see a small university, and relatively new program do well. If college hockey is going to grow it needs more teams like Quinnipiac to be successful. It’s a great game, not just for the bigger, more established programs. Personally I like to see any of the smaller schools do well, as well all of the ECAC teams.

College hockey is growing.......check out the conference re-alignments, Penn State putting on a team in a beautiful new arena. Rumors of other schools wanting to put on teams....UConn moving to Hockey East.
While we are on the same page wanting to see the ECAC do well.......Quinnipiac is hardly a "small" college. Clarkson is small, Saint Lawrence is small, Colgate is small, Quinnipiac (don't hold me to it) is one of the larger enrollments in the ECAC although Cornell dwarfs us all. It's not that we don't want to see Q Pac or any other ECAC team do well.....in fact, we were all very proud to have two ECAC teams in the finals. Are we jealous? Certainly.....but my issue is more with who and how Quinnipiac behaves (compared to the rest of the ECAC.) To my knowledge you are the only ECAC university who spends money like water on their teams. That's great for you....bad for the rest of us. In the long run....I think your team is better suited to Hockey East than the ECAC. We can debate that if you like but I base it on $$$ spent, promotion of your program, facility, etc.

Mike, the "lucky we haven't seen it" was in reference to our team never really faltering and having a bad season since joining Division I. It was in no way saying Q plays the cleanest brand of puck. For years, we defined agitators. I just think in a hockey hot bed like Massachusettes, how on earth is a state school, with average entry requirements, continually this bad. Obviously, they aren't setting their team up to fail but it's taken way too long for strides to have been made. To be throwing around things like humility and dignity to me is ludicrous. There are plenty of other posted who could use a lesson for sure. I was simply trying to find reason in Umass' thuggery and explaining that we haven't had continued struggles, ever. This is statistical not egocentric. I'm the biggest skeptic about the boys year in and year out and by no means do I think we're the golden children of college hockey. This is why I stay off this darn thing.

The humility comment wasn't directed at you. It just galls me to see other posters kicking teams when they are down. Believe me....the team I root for has had more than it's share of down.....and it's not fun. But we had the best coach in the ECAC in terms of teaching us how to win (and lose) with dignity, grace and humility.

Ken, you would be surprised. Last season was probably the first in the 7 I've been following that someone hasn't called for his head here on the forum. It peaked in 09-10 when we reached #4 and then faltered big time in the 2nd half. With what he has done with and for the program, he needs to really hit the skids for several years in a row before I'd start saying it's time. The man hasn't had a losing season since 95-96, and we aren't here having this discussion today without him.

Mike, those of us that are older (and supposedly wiser) realize that karma is a b!+ch. Talking bad today comes back to haunt you tomorrow. As the parity in this sport continues to grow, yesterday's "down" teams are tomorrows top dogs. Look at Brown... for years they were an ECAC doormat. Whittet has turned them around and there aren't many league teams that look forward to playing them. Heck, the same can be said about Union, and that team from New Haven. Both Cornell and Harvard have slipped in the pecking order over the same period of time.

In terms of enrollment, QU is 4th according to the numbers here at USCHO. However, I think QUBobcats70's comment about "small" has as much to do with national recognition as it does enrollment, and in that light even I consider QU to be "small".

1) Cornell 13500, 2) Harvard 6671, 3) Brown 5722, 4) Quinnipiac 5571, 5) Yale 5200, 6) Princeton 4600, 7) RPI 4500, 8) Dartmouth 4200, 9) Clarkson 2900, 10) Colgate 2800, 11) SLU 2000, 12) Union 2000.

Did you see that interview he did where he talks about teaching all day then running the practices in the middle of the night all for peanut$???
He basically started with nothing and has the Bobcats as not just an ECAC powerhouse but a US collage hockey powerhouse. He was also
pretty well the 1st US collage coach to draft from the BC Junior League. Now they are all here scouting. I see them at Surrey Eagles games
all the time. And people b*tch????? Get a life! ;)

One thing that is very concerning to me is Garteig's save percentage of .915. This is not even in the top 30 for goalies in the country. Granted he isn't seeing a whole lot of shots like others are seeing but still concerning to me. I'd like to see that save percentage in the .930's than where it is now.

The penalty kill and the team defense is still number 1 in college hockey.

Those "facts" always seem to come out at the end-of-season banquet, and they've been well documented too.

Some people are just never satisfied. ;)

As long as they score more than he gives up, I don't really care what his save percentage is, but I understand your concern. ;)

Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats: New season, new scoreboards, new chance at redemption

You only hate the teams that are good. That's why everyone hates Cornell, too -- you wish you were in their shoes.

Au contraire. I hate Cornell because their fans are the most obnoxious *****es I've ever encountered IRL. Sure, we're all clowns (and much worse) here on the board, but the Cornell creeps are outrageously conceited and deluded.

Hardly, Ken. Sometimes our sense of things is closely connected to how long we've been paying attention. UNH's coach Mac was recruiting in BC 20 years ago. Hard to imagine he was the only one. ;)

Well, yes. That goes without saying.

I'm not a stat-monger but I think you'll see Peca was most productive playing with the Jones' as well. They make everyone around them better. Still, Anas might have been just as good with Peca and St. Denis if given time to gel. Sam is a great player no matter how you cut it.

I tweeted this question the other day but did not get many responses. Better line: Jones-Jones-Peca from the NCAA run last year vs. Jones-Jones-Anas so far this year?

Last year, that line was flying on a national stage, and it seemed like Peca was always the best player on the ice. This year, the Jones twins have simply been playing on another level. While Anas in his own right seems to be a very talented player, and as other posters here have mentioned, he has undoubtedly benefited greatly from the play from the twins.

I would probably lean towards this year's line, but I'm interested to hear what some of you guys may think.

As a side note: only 1 National Championship team in the last 5 years has had a +93% save goaltender and that was BC. The other 4 teams were 92% or lower. To Mark's comment about giving up less than you score -- there is a goaltending theory/metric out there that looks at quality starts as a tool to measure success vs gaa or save %. It basically involves the percent of games you goaltender gives up 2 or less goals (regardless of the shot totals) or achieves a .915 percent when giving up 3 goals or more ( 3 on 36, 4 on 48 etc). 55% to 60% quality starts in a season is a good number. Garteig is currently at about 71% through 17 games.

I say this year's line. I sure did love the line last year and I really miss Peca burying unreal goals but Anas has a sixth sense for the top cheddar and it is so fun to watch. I think the Jones' really bring out the best in their linemate. Anas needs that more than Peca in my opinion but I still lean to this years too.

I guess a good follow up question would be how many points would Peca have if he were with the Jones'. I know its impossible to tell just thought it was interesting to think about and hear opinions

I guess I'm classified as a "Rand Hater" since I thought we had plateaued with several seasons of the same second half collapses and wanted a fresh voice. We had always heard reports of his heavy hand but it only rang louder in those years with plenty of accounts of players being fed up. Apparently that means I hate him.

Frankly I'm ecstatic that he's still around. Its great to have a guy that's been with the team for so long. At the same time, prior to last year, I think just about everyone had some doubt. Loyalty is a great thing to have but just accepting mediocrity because of an emotional attachment is dangerous as well.

Here's hoping we have a second year in a row that we play at the same level we're capable for a whole season.

Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats: New season, new scoreboards, new chance at redemption

Followed up with a shutout

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – In his second start for the Penguins, Eric Hartzell made 25 saves for the first shutout of his American Hockey League career and helped Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to a 1-0 victory over the Binghamton Senators at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

It was a scoreless tie between the Penguins and Senators until 4:14 remained in the second period.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton defenseman Philip Samuelsson was able to hold in a puck at the Binghamton blueline and push a pass down the right wall to Brian Gibbons. The Penguins center hit Harry Zolnierczyk on the far post for a backhand shot over the blocker of Senators goalie Nathan Lawson. The goal was Zolnierczyk’s team-leading ninth of the season.

Hartzell and the Penguins penalty kill ensured the lead stood, denying the Senators on three power play chances in the third period. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton finished 6-for-6 on the penalty kill.

While shorthanded the Penguins nearly went ahead, 1-0, at the end of the first frame, but a backhander by Gibbons was determined to have crossed the goal line after time expired.

I agree Anas benefits more as a freshman being teamed with the Jones'. He has proven skills and should only get better from the experience.

Would he have as many points as Anas? I don't think so, but I think the line might be better. Peca and the Jones just click whenever together on the ice. All 3 have such a good sense of where the puck is, where its going, and where it needs to be.

Peca will be fine over the long term. All I can say is remember March 31, 2013. ;)

Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats: New season, new scoreboards, new chance at redemption

As for Sam Anas you have a special player in the making. To see someone that young....a freshman, doing that well, is truly rare. I don't have the time to research it, but I'd be curious to know what the freshman scoring record is as I would guess he certainly is on pace to break it. As for player of the year.....that's a tall order for a freshman. With upper class players like Gardreaux being a Jr. and Carey being a senior it would be difficult for a freshman to break through that soon. He clearly is talented and (hoping for you he sticks around) your record books like they will be re-written.
I really hope you mean the Quinnipiac or ECAC freshman scoring record. Otherwise, you should look up some guy by the name of Paul Kariya: 25-75-100 in 39 games. That's 80% more points per game for the season than Anas has so far. For Anas to catch up to his production in the rest of the regular season, he'll need 68 points in the remaining 19 regular season games (a pace of 3.5 points per game, more than 2.5x his current output) and then he'd still need 2.6 points per game throughout the playoffs to keep pace.

Boy, wouldn't that be something to see...
