Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats: New season, new scoreboards, new chance at redemption

I watched him interacting with other coaches and scouts at the BCJHL Showcase. Looked to me like he was on very friendly terms with them. He seemed perfectly normal to me.

Ken

Ken....hopefully his social skills are improving. I don't want, nor intend to be derogatory...but I know the other coaches in the ECAC aren't exactly enamored of him. Obviously with his success and record....he is communicating on a level that is attracting players. Compared to most, he has a lot to work with as Q Pac has arguably one of the nicest facilities in the country.
Personally...he is not my cup of tea. Over the years I have really disliked how he handles his players, particularly in the press. But that's what makes the world go round. We all have our opinions, likes, dislikes........and while your at it. Why don't you send some of those twins and good players out that way over to SLU...we could use some.

I, for one, could care less what other ECAC coaches think of Rand, but I'm sure almost everyone of them would leave their job to take his. This isn't big time football where a coaches charisma matters and a record can't get him by on its own, in college hockey winning is the name of the game and nothing else. He brings in guys, the guys enjoy it and were a top team in the country. I expect nothing more. I know Pete's got some thoughts on this

I feel the same way. Winning is all that matters and graduating players. I do not care if Rand throws his team under the bus in press conferences if they don't play well. These are big kids. They can handle a little criticism from time to time. As long as he keeps bringing in good recruits, wins and make NCAA tournaments that is good enough for me. A national championship would also be nice from time to time.

Need to keep in mind that D-1 coaches are pretty uniformly hyper-competitive alpha dogs and asking them questions right after a tough game can get you some equally tough responses. Anyone who criticizes a coach's character based on a couple post-game press comments should read the article below about another slightly successful coach who is frequently (and IMO unfairly) misunderstood. Bottom line is unless you are personally close to the coach or the running of the team you probably don't have a clue what a coach's personality is really like. Union's Rick Bennett often gives terse post-game responses and earlier this season threw two of the best players on the team under the bus. I also happen to know that Rick is a great guy and his players like/respect him and would skate through a brick wall for him.

Then you have to throw the players themselves into the mix. I bet there are a few guys on the team who are a problem for the coaching staff.
Problems on and off the ice.

Lots of coaches call out players who had bad games and praises those who played well. That's the way I would want it both as a coach and as a player.
My Canucks are coached by the King of Calling Out....John Tortorella and from what I can tell the players like him. :D

Great point on Bennett. I saw that press conference when he threw those 2 guys under the bus. The team has responded since then and gone on a nice run. That type of motivation can work.

This is part of the reason people wanted his head a few years back. He has definitely gotten better at calling out players by name. Personally, I have no problem with calling out a guy if he deserves it. We do it all the time! ;)

I do not know Rand personally and I've only exchanged pleasantries with him a few times. He seems ok in my book. I remember the line from Miracle: "I'll be your coach, I won't be your friend". To me that's what you want from a head coach. As long as he keeps putting up 20+ wins a season, it's ok by me!

Yawn. Another successful ECAC coach, the same sad display of jealousy. When Rand has endured the same number of years of criticism and complaining that Coach Schafer has, you'll have had a *really* nice run - just enjoy it!

Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats: New season, new scoreboards, new chance at redemption

Are the amount of scholarships available to athletes by each school controlled by the school or the NCAA rules?
I need the $2 lesson on US university scholarships. :)

The NCAA allows 18 full scholarships for mens ice hockey. It's up to the school/coach on how they want to divvy up those scholarships.

Here's a FAQ Link

Yup... 18 max. QU gives the full 18 but it's my understanding there are no "full rides". How it's gets divvied up is obviously held close to the chest.

I'm fairly sure there is at least one full ride. No, not my kid....not my grandson....don't even know him.

Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats: New season, new scoreboards, new chance at redemption

It usually works along the lines of 12 fulls and 12 halves.
I've heard of that, but not at QU. It's been 3-4 years since I had my last scholarship conversation with anyone but at that time I was led to believe that our kids typically get 1- or 2-yr deals (that are renewable). Anything longer than that gets risky because of injuries, transfers, departures, etc. It's also my understanding that if a scholarship player leaves school, that scholarship is not available for someone else (i.e. Quenneville this season).

I really don't know how any of this stuff works at QU. Most of what I'm saying is just my best guess based on comments and conversations I've heard.

I don't know too much about our scholarship situation but I do know Quenneville's is available for this year and it's a full one

I'm quite sure there are partial scholarships at QU. There was a walk on playing a few years ago.
I don't think he saw much ice time but he practised and did gets shifts.

I have to believe some of the higher end players are on full rides. That is one of the ways to win recruiting battles against the power schools.
