Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats: New season, new scoreboards, new chance at redemption
I wanted to chime in on Bennett. He is one of my favorite coaches to talk to. He is a little short with his answers and a very imposing figure, but in the four or five times we've talked he has always blamed himself if something went wrong. I was floored the first time he said "We didn't play well tonight and that starts with me not getting the guys ready." Not something you hear often.
Brendan Whittet is a really hot ticket. Pretty funny in press conference and overall just a nice guy. Very fiery behind that bench though.
I didn't print this in my recap last year, but I had to interview Coach Schafer after game 2 against QU. I was the only one to talk to him. So here I am doing a one-on-one interview and I said something around the line of "Coach, I saw you and Rand having words across the ice midway through the second period, what was that all about?" He looks at me and says sort of angrily, "You want to know what I said!?" I then panicked, pooped myself and peed myself (in that order) and said "yes."
His response, "I told Rand he was being a ********** d***." I couldn't believe he said it. We continued the interview and I said "Can I print what you said about Rand?" He kind of smirked and said, "Ah, I think I got a little carried away." We agreed we'd leave it out. I was just amazed with how candid he was.
No one else really sticks out in my mind - Rand is just Rand to me. Just never ask who tomorrow's goalie will be.
Need to keep in mind that D-1 coaches are pretty uniformly hyper-competitive alpha dogs and asking them questions right after a tough game can get you some equally tough responses. Anyone who criticizes a coach's character based on a couple post-game press comments should read the article below about another slightly successful coach who is frequently (and IMO unfairly) misunderstood. Bottom line is unless you are personally close to the coach or the running of the team you probably don't have a clue what a coach's personality is really like. Union's Rick Bennett often gives terse post-game responses and earlier this season threw two of the best players on the team under the bus. I also happen to know that Rick is a great guy and his players like/respect him and would skate through a brick wall for him.
