2013-14 Pre Season banter. Put out the SOS and save us all!!

Re: 2013-14 Pre Season banter. Put out the SOS and save us all!!

Now this is interesting.....

http://ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect/pub.../division+iii+championships+committee+updates

Rather than simply approve the recommendation for baseball, the Championships Committee felt the idea was applicable to all sports. The Committee moved that out-of-conference strength of schedule be considered as a primary criterion for championship selection across all Division III sports effective Aug. 1, 2014. The change will require approval from the Division III Management Council.

Looks like you will not be able to load your OOC with cupcakes and hope for that Pool B/C bid.

Re: 2013-14 Pre Season banter. Put out the SOS and save us all!!

So this would appear to hurt teams in traditionally strong conferences and help teams in traditionally weaker conferences...
Considering your preset OOC and you have one "free" OOC game, you're not in any trouble.

Most teams have 7 or so OOC games to play with. They just can't schedule the Little Sister of the Poor as the predominant opponents for their OOC. It's not going to bother the one bid conferences at all. But the Pool B and Pool C contenders will have to limit their diet of Salves.

Im not even going to say it...

I wasn't speaking from any affiliation with any school. Just a general statement.

One possible outcome of this would be the top-third teams primarily scheduling OOC games with the other top-third teams essentially leaving the bottom two-thirds of the teams with no chance but an AC. Might also encourage leagues to create a smaller in-conference schedule to open up more OOC opportunities!?

Still ... the proposal is better than what exists now.

Let's ruffle some feathers. What conferences would this specifically hurt/help the most?

Re: Pairwise in D3?

Re: Pairwise in D3?

So what are the chances that D3 will see something similar to what D1 is now using to select the at-large NCAA bids? and would the data even be valid if calculated for D3? Prof?

If you read Todd's article on the ramifications this system would have had if applied to last year's D1 tournament, the result would have been no ramifications whatsoever. The exact same 16 teams (accounting for AQs of course) would have made the tournament anyway. Just the seedings would have been different.

So, in the end, big whoop...

Except that the ECAC writers and coaches picked Clarkson for dead last. Now lets see if the SUNY writers and coaches will do the same for Potsdam. ;)

Just heard that the Panthers are looking real good this year, more like the teams of 5 or 6 years ago. Reliable source. We better watch out if this is so!

I heard some rumblings as well of bright pastures ahead for the Panthers. They already were on their way last year I feel with some impressive freshmen. Neugold and Silcoff are studs. Just need some more consistent goaltending now.

Agree entirely and I would expect Middlebury will challenge Bowdoin for the NESCAC title this season. I think Mike Peters sews up the starting Goalie position and Beany sticks with him. Panthers were underserved by the musical chairs at Goalie last season. Panthers return to glory in 13-14.

Would be nice to see Mike sew up the position. However, Middlebury's travel partner may have something to say about the final standings.

There ya go.

This proposal is just a dumb construct that adds (more) possible smoke-filled-room intrigue to the D-3 selection process... I didn't see anything about objectivity or accountability on the part of the committee there.

The manner in which SOS is currently calculated by the NCAA seems to hold water, IMO. Ergo, playing well in a strong conference is going to be rewarded, even if you schedule a few cupcakes per year -and D-3 is full of them-, because SOS doesn't recognize conference affiliation; it just looks-at who you beat, who they beat, etc.

The real problem in the D-3 selection process is the inclusion of unmerited AQs in the PS. If the Ivory-Tower guys want to fix the system, they ought to opt for an objective metric that is blind and transparent.

It appears that somebody who worked on that clause has an axe to grind... No way around it.
