Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

Count on Maine to lead the way.

Voted this morning. Heavy turnout. They only had one ballot box so we had to stand in line after voting, rather than before...at least we were already inside. They had requested a second box but had been turned down...

Nice to see you again.

For my stance I think it is wrong to legislate through "mob rules" by amending the Constitution. It's proof that something like this being put on the ballot when we have way more serious problems going on that certain factions of our government don't have their priorities straight.
You have no problem when "mob rules" goes in directions you like.

Example please. Legislation isn't "mob rules". Neither is judicial review. I can't think of a single Amendment to the Constitution that I've supported. So, what are you getting at?

I really hate that you constantly distort my positions while ripping my accurate portrayals of John Kyl for example.

Amending the Constitution because you can't pass legislation is a ****ty way to govern.

Off to cancel out some knuck's vote!

Hope there's someone there with a clipboard wanting to check up on me. Won't be here in Madison, but it would be fun.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

Regarding the hurricane and its impact on the election, I wouldn't use it as an excuse for either one winning or losing. However, what I think it did do is interrupt the Romney campaign's narrative that it was building momentum. He wasn't at the time, but maybe if he kept beating the drum people would have started believing him. While I can't quantify the effect, being completely out of the headlines for a week right before election day isn't a position any challenger would like to be in. Now of course if Mittens somehow pulls this out its all moot, and Chris Christie might want to find another job soon. ;)

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

The fact that FEMA's ineptitude and failure to respond has been buried to the bottom of page 18. The fact that the white people in devastated, waterlogged Staten Island who've been ignored and abandoned don't provoke the same liberal media outrage as the blacks in New Orleans during Katrina. All sorts of elements combined.

I read the NYTimes, and on Page One for the last four days (until today, where it's all election coverage) it's been long lines at gas stations, fights breaking out, Staten Island in desperate shape but not getting coverage. I wonder what you're reading.

But you could argue that it is getting spent and it is staying mostly on American soil

You could...it would make you sound like an idiot and completely misses the point...but sure you definitely could ;)

There's more to it than that, though. From gallup.com:

http://www.gallup.com/poll/158519/romney-obama-gallup-final-election-survey.aspx

The pertinent quote: "Between Oct. 22-28 and Nov. 1-4, voter support for Obama increased by six points in the East, to 58% from 52%, while it held largely steady in the three other regions. This provides further support for the possibility that Obama's support grew as a result of his response to the storm."

So Obama has huge gains in the East, but is steady in the reast of the country. I don't see how it can be explained any other way than that people changed their minds (or made up their minds) about how to vote based on the storm. Whether it makes sense or not, there you go. Given that the only swing state in "the East" as defined by Gallup was Pennsylvania (Virginia is in "the South"), and that Pennsylvania was probably the least affected by the storm of all the Eastern states, probably means that the storm won't affect the ultimate outcome of the election, but likely will affect the margin of victory.

This is correct. Local media has been all over that stuff, and rightfully so.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

Fox News, always looking out for the smallest slight against the Republican party, has actually put up a pretty substantial one on its homepage. Voters in a Philly polling place (local school) are greeted with the mural of President Obama and his 2008 campaign logo and slogan. There are very good reasons to support laws that state a public building cannot be named after a politician until X number of years after his/her passing.

Sure, it could solidify his support in states that he was already going to win in the Northeast. I can see that happening.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

Voted early. Had ballot e-mailed to me, mailed it back in.

You can also submit it by web this year, but given the fact that I'm in "Series of Tubes" Alaska I expect that to end in hilarity.

Facebook/Twitter moratorium in effect until the wharrgarbl dies down. I'm FREE.

I bet that changed a lot of votes.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

A friend of mine joked that he was going to bring a gasoline can with him to his polling place as a joking commentary on the long lines at both polling places and gas stations here in the NYC area. I can't think of any way people could possibly take that the wrong way.

Do you know what is involved in ratifying an amendment to the Constitution? it's a lot harder than passing a law!
