2012 Poster Cruise....

Re: 2012 Poster Cruise....

Current score:
5 day - 5 votes
7 day - 2 votes.

Keep the ideas and questions coming.
On a more serious note, I should probably switch my vote to the 5 day cruise.

I still agree with wT on the desirability of additional ports of call. But putting together a good sized group is more important. From the first batch of responses, it looks there's a decent chance of getting a substantial group for the 5 day option. The 7 day option, not so much.

Re: 2012 Poster Cruise....

Ok, with pgb's change in vote- here's the current tally-

5 night- 9 votes
7 night- 1 vote.

It's pretty clear that my original plan is the primary option. The only fly in the oitment is the possibility that RCCL's plans don't line up with the Frozen Four- meaning that the alternating cruises they run with the same ship have to be the Saturday prior.

I've called them about it, and mentioned how that cruise would line very nicely up with the Frozen Four- so they know of the games, it remains to be seen if the timing will work or not.

So plan A is 5 nights out of Tamapa, starting the Saturday prior to the Championship weekend, plan B is the 7 night (and *maybe* one will be out of Tampa- who knows that far out) IF the timing doesn't line up.

I do suspect that we will get at least 20-30 people in the end- 10-15 cabins. Right now, off the top of my head, I've already gotten close to 6 cabins between us, friends, family, and the handful of you who have told me outright that you are coming, no matter.

So, please don't feel any pressure to go, more look at it as an opportunity to extend the Tampa Frozen Four to a cool week, or take your first cruise, or whatever.

Re: 2012 Poster Cruise....

You all mention the possibility of lots of heavy drinking... Well, that also shows how cool cruises can be- Mrs Alfa and I have so much on our plate, that we actually go to bed reasonably early. Always looking for the more active excursions, stuff to do in the morning, etc. You can twist this kind of vacation ANY way you want.

Active
Sloth
lush
excersise

whatever.

And we all just get together for dinner (and even that is optional, since food is quite abundant on ships).

Re: 2012 Poster Cruise....

Do they have liquor stores on the boat, so you can drink in your room? I would imagine that, even though it will be much more expensive than a mainland liquor store, it would still be cheaper to buy a bottle than to drink at the bar.

In my experience (Princess Line) you can order a bottle from room service to keep in your cabin for a night cap or whatever. Naturally it's priced pretty high ($22 for a fifth of Bombay Sapphire) but it is nice to have a relaxing cocktail or beer on in your cabin or on the balcony any time you like.

Ok, this is what I thought they would do, but maybe not every cruise line does it this way. If this was the case, all I'd have to do is get my empty flask on the boat. :D

Re: 2012 Poster Cruise....

Interesting. Five day option would be better.

Everyone should try and do this. It will be the last time a large number of us can meet and have fun, with the world ending that December and all.

Re: 2012 Poster Cruise....

Will they have a rink?
Isn't it that the day the world ends, hell will freeze over or something?:p  If so, then I would hope there would be a rink.
Well you see:
Sven and Ole are at the bar, drunk. They hop on their snowmobiles to go home, crash, and die. Sven and Ole go to hell. Their first day there the devil is making his rounds and he sees Sven and Ole with unzipped Arctic Cat snowsuits standing by the hellfire roasting marshmallows. Furious that they could be enjoying themselves in hell, he turns up the heat. The next day, as he's walking around the devil finds Sven and Ole in jeans and t-shirts playing horseshoes and drinking a beer. He asks them "what the heck are you doing!!" Ole says "Well, da wedder iz so nice, its like springtime here, eh!" The devil, even more furious, immediately turns the heat up again. Then next day, sure that Sven and Ole would be miserable, the devil goes on his rounds. To his surprise he finds Sven and Ole in swimming trunks laying on lawnchairs. Sven yells to the devil "Since it is so nice out, we taut we would work our tans, eh!" The devil decides that enough is enough, he'd show these two area clowns who is the boss of hell, he turns off the heat in hell. The next day, there are icicles everywhere and it is snowing in hell! The devil walks by Sven and Ole's room and hears yelling and screaming and celebrating, it sounds like a party! The devil bursts through the door and yells "What are you doing!" Sven says "Well da hell just frozed over!!!! Dat means dat the Vikes won da Super Bowl!!!!"

Re: 2012 Poster Cruise....

Does this mean I'm going to have to get a credit card again? I just cancelled the one I got for the sole purpose of the cruise I went on a couple years ago. If so, I guess that means Brenthoven won't be joining us. :D

As for booze, it probably varies by cruiseline. Went on Celebrity with my family, I believe they allowed you to bring aboard 1 bottle of wine per person to drink in your room. I could be wrong though.

Wine bottle filled with grain alcohol and food coloring. Check.

(if I can only bring 1 bottle I need to get as much alcohol content on that boat as possible)

He still has a credit card and I have seen him use it!

Re: 2012 Poster Cruise....

I can say that this is something my (by then) wife and I would be very interested in. I have been promising her a cruise for a while, but I hate warm weather and generally try to keep our travels climate neutral. A cruise capped by a weekend at the Frozen Four would certainly satisfy both of our interests. I would lean towards the 5 days before the Frozen Four as the preferable option.

go to bank, ask to exchange ATM card with debit card.

Although, I would NOT recommend this at all. A proper credit card would be much more secure for something like this.

we are in Tampa right now. the April weather is great. low 80's with cooling breezes, low 60's at night.

I think you are going to like the Frozen Four in Tampa. The downtown area where the rink is - is nice, very nice riverwalk, museum, shopping, a trolley to ride down to Ybor City, the home of cigar rolling and Cuban food. and many many many bars and clubs of all types.
fond memories of sitting in one open air bar, devouring crawfish and VooDoo beer.

Re: 2012 Poster Cruise....

Huskyfan, I really like Tampa. I visit family there often and I enjoy it. I am just not a fan of warm weather. Anything above 70 irritates me. I like 60's and 50's. But hell, if it makes the lady happy then I'm sure I can put up with it for a week.

The only cruise I took was in Alaska and it was fantastic. These cruiselines go all out to make sure people have a good time. I hope something comes of this thread. I know college hockey fans are fun, but if we take over a ship, it would be fantastic!

It will. If RCCL schedules the cruise to leave Tampa on March 31 for 5 nights, we will be on it.

And I'm pretty sure if the best we can do is a 7 night post FF cruise, I'll be on it.

I've been thinking about a posters cruise for a few years, and if the cards fall as RCCL's been letting them fall for this past week, and for next year, then we will be having a College Hockey Fan Cruise. Then the question is- how many of us will be going? And how good of a deal that works out to be.

(FWIW, The Frozen Four is April 5 and 7, Easter is April 8)
