2012 Poster Cruise....

Re: 2012 Poster Cruise....

There's also one in Brandon (where my uncle lives), which is about 15 minutes from Tampa. I've played there - it's a nice rink and they have a bar.
wait, a bar, you say?

I haven't participated before, and my hockey skills are on par with the late Christopher Reeves, but you make an intriguing argument...

Re: 2012 Poster Cruise....

I've left luggage in hotels before, when I was going to be staying there when I got back from a different location. Otherwise, the rink might agree to store a limited amount of stuff for a fee.

I'm personally really hoping for a posters game in Tampa.

The one issue for the posters game in Tampa is bringing your stuff. pgb-ohio has correctly noted that the past few posters games have been mostly drivers instead of fliers. And since most of us will probably fly to Tampa...

But we can leave that discussion to the posters game threads.

As a few of you have posted, finding a week's worth of storage should not be a massive problem. Just something we will have to deal with.

For those of you who have not been on one, it may be hard to convince you, but we really like them. Our first cruise was just over 10 years ago, and we have gotten 5 more in since then. There's a lot of cheezy things to do on the ship, and it's all part of the experience, and the options on land are pretty vast.

The one thing I will warn- the final bill can add up- since drinks are not included (inluding soda- just water, tea, lemonade, and basic coffee are part of the main menu) you can rack up a pretty sizeable bar bill. And excursions are not free either. But for the most part- basic food (unlimited) and lodging can be easily $100pp/night. We think that's a killer deal.

I would expect to at least double the cost of the cruise on bar tab alone.

St. Louis had one too. But, I remember no one going since we all just wanted to go back to the hotel and shower...

I'd prefer the 5 day one if I end up doing it. Both for the work thing and the fact that it's before the FF so we're not scrambling to get across the state to make it on Sunday and have something happen that causes us to miss the boat.

We went to Popeye's after the St. Louis poster game because, well, we had tDarkness with us.

You might end up like Christopher Reeves if you visit the bar too often before the game. :p

Amen. After my bar bill in DC (granted my team had just won the FF) and the cost of the bar bill in Denver (not as bad), I can say that I'd be spending a goodly amount on booze.

alfa - Like the idea of a cruise (I'd vote for a 5 day after the FF), but I highly doubt I'd be participating as the plan (should I be able to attend) would include a trip to Disney and (possibly) Universal as well as some time on the beach. This may be nil as I (fingers crossed) will be in a Master's Program and may only be able to come Friday night - Sunday anyway.

Re: 2012 Poster Cruise....

In theory, I suppose you could, but I really doubt that they would allow you to play hockey on the rink- too much risk. It's about half a rink long, and a little narrower- at least on the one class of ship- for the one out of Port Canaveral, I'm not sure if it's a little bigger or not (it's a much bigger ship than the one I've been on).

Still, I doubt they would let us play hockey. Could always ask, I guess. Couldn't really bring our own equipment, I think.
Oh, I realize that; I was mostly just having fun with the idea.

To the extent that I was being serious, I was envisioning playing with foam pucks and very limited equipment. I still don't have a clear picture in my mind of what the on-ship rinks look like, but I'd imagine the boards would be very limited -- more like those used for ice shows. If that's the case then the traditional vulcanized rubber would likely be out of the question.

Another angle: If you've ever played any kind of a sport while a cruise is in progress, you know that you don't really need the ship's bar to experience the feeling of playing with impaired skills.;)

Re: 2012 Poster Cruise....

5 day cruise for you? I would guess you'd spend about a grand at the bar...

I wonder if he could keep it to just a grand? Some friends just got back from a cruise. Their luggage was x-rayed and the bottles they had hidden there were found. The booze was locked away and returned to them when they got off the boat. I don't think there are any cheap drinking holes on the boat.

I wondered about this - almost asked what the policy was on bringing booze aboard a cruise. Pretty sure their major profit is off booze.

Do they have liquor stores on the boat, so you can drink in your room? I would imagine that, even though it will be much more expensive than a mainland liquor store, it would still be cheaper to buy a bottle than to drink at the bar.

My friends, who went with some experienced cruisers, were told to bring the mini-bottles. They didn't listen and the regular bottles were found. Not sure how come they'd miss all the mini-bottles on the x-ray.

I don't think so. Not from what I heard.

My coworker went not too long ago and they pulled off many "airplane" size bottles. I would assume they get cleared because it could just be cologne, etc. A fifth or handle is pretty unlikely to be anything but booze.

Re: 2012 Poster Cruise....

I can think of several better things to be doing on international waters than playing hockey. :D

Monkey knife fight?

Re: 2012 Poster Cruise....

Here's a photo of the ice rink on RCCL's Liberty of the Seas. I was on it two years ago, & it was part of their largest fleet (largest in the world, actually) until they started their Genesis class of ships late last year:

Yes, it's small so you likely wouldn't be able to do 3 on 3 games. But the ice show that they do is amazing to watch & it "sells out" quickly. The tickets don't cost anything, but they're snatched up pretty quickly the mornings of the shows.

As for liquor stores on the ship. There is a duty free store (great prices) on board, but any liquor you buy there they hold for you until your last night, then it is delivered to your room. If you buy any liquor at any of the ports, they will do the same thing when you board the ship. Of course, this is done to prevent everyone from buying a lot of liquor & drinking in their rooms. Cruises make their money on liquor. And yes it is easy to rack up a good-sized bar tab on the ship :). You don't actually pay with cash, you just give them your room card & it gets charged to your account. So many people don't know how much they spent until they get their summary on their last night. Usually you have your card tied back to your credit card, but some people do control themselves & deposit cash into their cruise account.

RCCL only does a drink package with Coca-Cola, they don't do any liquor packages.

That is pretty compact. 2 on 2 perhaps? Nah. The Monkey Knife Fight is the more realistic alternative.:D
