Re: 2012 NCAA Tournament: Bracketology

first week they did this, they had bu falling from #5 to OUT!
now they have bu staying in and retaining their #1 seed in worcester.

what changed?!?!?!?! :p

I think a lot of people thought BU would drop some due to the difficulties over the holidays. I had BU as a Frozen Four team when the season began (along with CHW as a collective whole), and it seems as though the Terriers are playing up to that hype. FWIW, I think I placed BU as a #3 seed after the Holidays (in the first forecast), but a lot of the others didn't have them in the tourney at all.

Re: 2012 NCAA Tournament: Bracketology

Wow, the east is getting pounded this season with only 3 HE and 1 ECAC teams in the rankings today and in the predicted post-season, along with AFA predicted for the AHA auto-seed. :(

??? i read five HEA teams in the top 9. not too shabby ;)

They are predicting the 4th place team in the AHA will win the auto-bid? I know they have done well in the AHA tournament, but that may be a little bit of a stretch. I wouldn't be surprised if they are in the first round and should they win that, be on the road in the quarterfinals.

That said, until they are eliminated, I won't count them out either.

That was my thought process (along with some of the other guys as well, obviously). Until someone knocks off Air Force, they will likely be the pick, unless they just tank the rest of the season. FWIW, I have only seen a few AHA teams play, so I am surely not an expert. Plus, the AHA fan rep that is part of our group is from the Air Force. Personally, I hope Robert Morris pulls it off, as I like seeing new teams make the NCAA Tournament.

Re: 2012 NCAA Tournament: Bracketology

I think there are a bunch of teams that could win the AHA. It may be the most competitive conference tournament from top to bottom. We are going to find out a lot about Mercyhurst, with only 3 home dates left. RIT will be a favorite with one of the top goaltenders in the league. Robert Morris isn't going anywhere. I could see Niagara, Bentley, UConn, or Holy Cross winning this as well - but a little less likely. It depends on the matchups.

I have the pairwise data since 2003, taken at key points throughout the season, and mid-January teams in the Pairwise end up in the field 79.4% of the time. The top 8 seeds have made the tournament 64 of 72 times (88.9%) and no #1 or #2 in the mid-January rankings has ever failed to make the field. Of the top 4 overall seeds, only 2010 UMD (#3) and 2004 St Cloud (#4) have failed to make the field.
I had forgotten how high that UMD team was in the pairwise. Struggled down the stretch and played themselves out of the tournament. Great factoid

Re: 2012 NCAA Tournament: Bracketology

You had mentioned that 5 of the top 9 were Hockey East Teams. I was assuming you were lumping Notre Dame into that category as a future team. I simply lumped Notre Dame and Michigan into the WCHA as past teams. I thought that's where we were going with that. :p:D:D

Re: 2012 NCAA Tournament: Bracketology

That West regional is ROUGH.

Of the current brackets, I think the Midwest is slightly more difficult than the West Regional, largely because I think Miami is going to vault up the rankings here in the final two months and be a big time player for a national title this year.

If Ohio State were in that mix, you could also cross into the setup of the women's leagues. :p:D
