Or maybe it takes a year to get the book written. Danny Valencia had this problem. Pitchers didn't have a complete scouting report on him in his first year or so here. When they did have a complete report, his production dropped like a rock.

Usually you get around the league once before they start to adjust to you.

Pretty much. Which is why Valencia is struggling, even in the minors. He hasn't adapted to their adaptations.

When I saw "traded for a minor-leaguer" I thought, "Of course, we're always trading for dinky minor league guys!" Then I saw -- "Pineda, 21, hit .421 with 22 RBIs in 36 games for the Gulf Coast League Red Sox this season. He's a switch-hitter and is capable of playing all three outfield positions." Now that doesn't sound so bad.

GCL is a rookie league, and he was the oldest player in it. I think his next stop is the Brooklyn Park Babe Ruth League.
