Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

We've heard about protecting marriage. Where's the move to protect our Constitution?

There is none. The Democrats are too weak and wimpy to protect anything and the Republicans are going to get their agenda passed whether it be through the legislature, through Constitutional Amendment, or through the Courts. Anyway they can get it done they're going to get it done.

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

Agree. Push to ban gay marriage could backfire...if not today, very likely 4 years from now. This as public sentiment is moving from a societal fear of the unknown (ie gay marriage) to getting tired of perceived bigotry.
At this point, opponents of gay marriage are predominantly old and old people vote like there's no tomorrow anyway (ahem).

Using these empty but symbolic wedge issues is very effective in what Karl Rove euphemistically describes as "drawing contrasts" (translation: whipping up hatred), but I don't know whether it will actually increase turnout in this presidential election. Chances are if gay marriage is going to determine your vote you are the kind of person is who already marching to the polls to stop the Kenyan commie Muslin from destroying Amurka.

There's one place it might be worth trying: older African Americans are even more homophobic than older whites. But it's going to be really hard for the GOP to woo older blacks when all the rest of their rhetoric is dog whistles to tap into white stereotypes of "food stamp recipients who don't have a work ethic."

I can never tell which of your alt personalities is using your screen name. ;)

Rachel Maddow is not the same as Fox News. That's like saying Morning Joe is the same as Fox and Friends. They're not. I've watched enough O'Reilly and Hannity and enough Maddow to know and know the difference between the two. Believe it or not Maddow actually gives the other side a voice. O'Reilly does not. Hannity does not.

Maddow, Stewart like OReilly, etc are biased.

Maddow, Stewart unlike OReilly, etc. use facts that acurately depict the situation and solid logic to reach conclusions to a faar greater extent.

I've never seen Maddow give the other side a voice without a smirk, and that's exactly what Bill-O does. (Hannity's a turd even by the standards of the FNC punchbowl, so I won't argue there).

The major difference between Maddow and FNC or 90% of the Air America crowd for that matter is she's very smart. I can imagine having an interest in what Maddow had to say about something non-political; she thinks clearly and can express her thoughts and explore a topic, if a little dorkily, then at least with intelligence and curiosity. The right wing OTOH no longer has anyone of that caliber or sincerity. P. J. O'Rourke at least was funny. Tucker Carlson for all his buffoonery was obviously intelligent. Buckley was of course both. But there's nobody like that in the vast desert of today's right. Conservatism now is what they used to lampoon feminism as: humorless, spiteful, and incapable of self-criticism.

Yes, exactly what I was getting at.

In other news, Frothy Mix may be spurting again:

This is the greatest nomination race in the history of comedy. :)

In other news, Frothy Mix

my curiosity got the better of me so I (I DO NOT ADVISE THIS) looked up the "frothy mix" meme/campaign. The campaign itself tells you everything you need to know about the liberal mentality.

And Santorum's response to a sick kid that if he's "spending $900 on an IPad, he should have no problem spending $900 a month on his drugs" tells me all I need to know about the other side.

He doesn't have a snowball's chance of being nominated. Calling him representative of conservatism is like calling Ralph Nader a typical liberal.

Ralph Nader never won a state in a Democratic primary, nor has he ever held elective office such as a US Senate seat, so your comparison isn't valid. Santorum epitomizes conservatism. Where it that he had a few more bucks he'd be the rival to The Mittster now and not a seriously ethically challenged Newtie Gingrich.

OK, bad comparison. My point was that there's a difference between one marginal candidate saying "take away his medicine" (or whatever the outlandish charge is), and a widespread, grassroots internet campaign to back up that person's plan to take away the medicine. One thing Santorum said doesn't represent what the rank and file think.

(In response, by the way, to bronconick: "Santorum's response tells me all I need to know about the other side.")

Interesting that Florida turnout was 200K below 2008 levels in the primary. That's not good by any stretch. So basically in 3 out of 4 primaries the turnout was disappointing, not so coincidentally in the 3 swing states. Also it should be noted that Ron Paul's strong showing vs 2008 in both Iowa and New Hampshire is the only reason 2012 turnout approached 2008 and those lunatics ain't showing up in the general unless Ronbo runs for Prez as a Libertarian. Where he didn't compete, Florida, turnout sunk by over 10%. I'm curious how Nevada's #'s end up coming in.

You have to remember that started as grassroots deal in the Savage Love advice column because Santorum has a vile disgust for gays and Dan Savage is openly gay. The whole point was, and this was years ago, to make it so if you googled Santorum's name that description would show up in the google search at the top. That it survived this long is hilarious. Plus Santorum is scum so it couldnt happen to a better guy :)

You call it hilarious. I call it hateful. How would you feel about it if someone started a campaign to define your own name to mean something you found particularly vile and disgusting (say for example, "living, breathing newborn baby.") Doesn't that seem mean? ;)

That's totally unfair. Facts have a well known liberal bias.
