Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

I admire your optimism, but I'm not on board. The "true" conservatism you speak of hasn't been seen in the US (I'll leave other countries out for the purposes of this discussion) in decades. If Romney loses to Obama, the party isn't going to say its because he was too conservative. It'll be because he wasn't conservative enough. Us vs Them right wing politics have been at the forefront since Nixon. That means 40+ years of it and I don't see it changing anytime soon. The scapegoats may change (from blacks to Jewish people to Catholics to gays to immigrants to ???) but the song is the same. "These people (fill in the blank) are getting ahead, and you need to vote with us Republicans to stop them". Really, when was the last uplifting, optimistic GOP campaign? 1980? 1984? That's a hell of a long time ago.

What are you watching? McCain's campaign was very optimistic.

It's there, it's just not getting the big paychecks or the big media. David Frum and the other guys who were drummed out of the NRO for not sticking to the party line are part of it. As always, first come the philosophers, then come the people, and last come the politicians. Small government intellectuals had already invented everything Reagan ran on by 1960. What is coming next -- green, tolerant, educated, reality-based conservatism like Cameron's Tories -- is already being created by the next wave of conservative intellectuals, and the philosophical groundwork will be there in time to catch the next popular wave. That's how that stuff always works.

Please. Fig is an "anyway the wind blows" politician, just like Romney. If a majority of Republicans were pro-choice and pro-gay marriage, he would be too. He's the epitome of a closet atheist.

Santorum, on the other hand, does appear to actually represent the theocons.

Valid. Santorum and Gingrich take do different roads. Santorum church sourced vs. Gingrich headstrong sourced morality.

Yet each end up at a very similar location. Newt's wavering on issues such as the environment is cosmetic. Both are social/military conservatives. Both will score big in the south and flounder on the coasts. When Santorum drops, his votes will not go to Romney...they will go to Gingrich.

I admire your optimism, but I'm not on board. The "true" conservatism you speak of hasn't been seen in the US (I'll leave other countries out for the purposes of this discussion) in decades.

Just to show how lively neanderthal conservatives are...note that the closest anyone has gotten to the presidency in a generation is Ron Paul (and he doesn't fully fit the stereotype) and Paul's support is hovering at best about 10% of voters.

Maddow, Stewart like OReilly, etc are biased.

Maddow, Stewart unlike OReilly, etc. use facts that acurately depict the situation and solid logic to reach conclusions to a faar greater extent.

Well, Maddow and Stewart are biased, but that's because the truth has a liberal bias. :)

??

these people don't think that they're 'the poor'. they think that gov policies benefit the poor at their expense. this chit is exactly what they want to hear.

"The Poor" are hardly the GOP's base. You heard Bushiewushie during the 2000 campaign..."You're the haves and the have-mores. Some call you the elite, I call you my base." The only people who vote Republikkkan are millionares and stupid people.

While we're bashing Conservatives, I saw this on a sign on the side of a small-business minivan in the Office Depot parking lot today:

"The only two defining forces who have ever volunteered to die for you are Jesus Christ and the American Soldier."

That'll do.

Clarification. When I said neanderthal conservatives I referred to this ancient breed that Kep referred to...not today's iteration. Really not to say today's conservatives are 'backwards'.

Those traditional (read: actual) conservatives call themselves Paleocons. A friend of mine is one. He hates the Neocons and Theocons far more than any Liberal does. They've debased his brand.

I think I'm both shocked and embarrassed... Congratulations Minnesota, we're officially stupid.

Having seen the Gopher fans... no comment. ;)

PPP is essentially the Dems' equivalent to a Rasmussen-like in-house party poll, so I wouldn't let it get you down until the real pollsters start checking in.

Doubt that state goes red anyway. Don't be too ashamed of yourself. If anything, you're helping to extend this gong show.

Michigan's going to go the same way. Romney will win that primary because daddy was the governor and they're not batty enough to go for Newt or Frothy, but Obama wins it in the general. Romney on record as anti-union and anti-auto bailout won't fly in the land of the UAW.

No way. PPP is very good.

At any rate, there are 0 delegates being awarded tomorrow, even though 3 states are voting.

Mitt wants to save the soul of America. What more could you want?

I also think that despite George being a popular governor, the fact that Mitt hasn't lived in Michigan for eons effectively cancels that boost out, even before the anti-UAW/auto industry bailout stuff gets factored in.

Yeah. Our shame is Hoekstra appearing to be the Republican frontrunner for Stabenow's senate seat. I don't even like her and I'm going to be forced to vote for her just to keep Pete working as a lobbyist.

Is that the turtle fence guy? How could you not want to put that guy back in office ?!?!
